    Dear LFN Fans,
    There have been a few requests for an update detailing the results of the CQS4 LFN Charity Auction. I am extremely pleased to announce that we raised a total of $91,267.00 Canadian. This was our most successful event to date.
    Of the grand total, 10% was allotted for Administrative costs such as the printing of auction receipts and programs, shipping of donations to and from Canada, and auction room rental. The 90% totaled $82,140.60 (CA).
    Following are the amounts that have been paid to the charities:

    $32,295.40 Foundation Mira--Roy Dupuis
    $8,053.91 Hospital for Sick Children--Peta Wilson

    $742.50 American Cancer Society--Mechella (artist)
    $463.50 V-Day--Cindy Dolenc
    $82,140.60 Total
    In addition, the subsequent LFN Online Charity Auction raised $10,499.00 Canadian for some of the actors' charities. Following are the amounts that were paid from that fundraiser:

    $969.38 Foundation Mira--Roy Dupuis
    $334.70 Hospital for Sick Children--Peta Wilson
    $334.68 Community Aid Abroad--Peta Wilson

  • MIRA Dream to Become A Reality Soon! -- Joyce, 19:42:39 10/12/01 Fri
    Pierre Noiseux and Simon Melrose have had a wonderful "dream" for quite a long time. They, along with many supporters, "dream" of the day when MIRA guidedogs will be placed with receipients in the United States. That "dream" will become a reality soon!

    Recently, a guide dog trainer and instructor in North Carolina was trying to place a dog with one of his students. She is only 16 years old, which is younger than the normal placement age of 18 or older for US organizations. He decided to surf the internet and came upon MIRA's website. The instructor found that MIRA guide dogs are placed with clients as young as 11 years old. This amazed him, as did MIRA's philosophy of breeding and training.

    Since his initial encounter with MIRA on their website, the instructor has journeyed to Quebec, visited the facilities, observed training sessions and discussed philosophies in detail. The appropriate application has been submitted for his 16 year old student.

    The MIRA "dream" will become a reality in the not too distant future.

    Your support of MIRA is greatly appreciated,
    Joyce

  • Open Brain -- Shirleym, 00:02:07 10/13/01 Sat
    This article reminded me of the end of "Open Heart", an episode a lot of people didn't like, but I thought was a good one. I've edited the article some to keep it from being too long.

    *******************************************

    October 9, 2001 The New York Times

    Truth and Justice, by the Blip of a Brainwave

    By BARNABY J. FEDER

    Since the World Trade Center bombing in 1993, Dr. Lawrence A. Farwell has been arguing that terrorist operations can be investigated through careful monitoring of the brain waves emitted by suspects during interrogation. The claim did not get very far with the Federal Bureau of Investigation or any other major law enforcement agency then.

    Now, since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, Dr. Farwell and a number of supporters are pressing for a much more thorough consideration.

    Their effort is another instance of the typical innovator's natural impulse to dress up old visions in front- page news. But Dr. Farwell's investigative technique, which he likes to call brain fingerprinting, may also be seen as a typical story of conflict over how to develop real-world applications from promising bodies of research.

    Dr. Farwell's concept is an offspring of a vast body of research on the electrical activity of the brain. Most of the research has focused on easily observed phenomena like alpha and beta waves, which have been respectively linked to activities including sleep and heightened alertness. But one subset beginning in the mid-1960's homed in on extremely
    brief electrical wave patterns associated with recognition of familiar sounds, smells and sights.

    The most widely studied of such event-related changes is a split-second bump in electrical activity that starts anywhere from 300 milliseconds to 800 milliseconds after a recognized stimulus. Many researchers have studied how the bump, called p300, appears to be affected by various diseases of the brain. Some have pondered how it may be used to help severely disabled people control computers. Starting in the 1980's, Dr. Farwell and a few other neuroscientists began exploring whether the phenomenon could be used to detect concealed knowledge.

    One reason for their interest is that the most widely used lie detectors, known as polygraphs, have long been considered an embarrassment by many scientists. Polygraphy
    measures a suite of physical reactions to interrogation. The underlying premise is that people being questioned about crimes in which they were involved will involuntarily exhibit telltale increases in their pulse, blood pressure, breathing rate and sweat levels.

    But polygraphy has been under fire ever since it was invented in the 1920's. Critics say such testing is flawed because it measures emotion rather than knowledge. They say the guilty can train themselves to respond in ways that deceive their questioners while many easily flustered people have been wrongly branded as guilty.

    "The diagnostic value of this type of testing is no more than that of astrology or tea-leaf reading," said Dr. Drew C. Richardson, a psychologist who formerly headed the F.B.I.'s research laboratory at Quantico, Va., and its unit overseeing chemical and biological warfare threats.

    Dr. Richardson is among those who has believed for many years that measuring brain waves is a far better alternative. He recently left the F.B.I. to join Human Brain Science, a company in Fairfield, Iowa, founded by Dr. Farwell, who began researching p300 waves in the mid- 1980's as a graduate student at the University of Illinois.

    Dr. Farwell caught Dr. Richardson's attention in 1993 with an experiment that correctly identified 11 F.B.I. agents and four impostors by measuring their brains' responses to cues
    that would be familiar only to someone who had been through the F.B.I.'s training school. The cues included short phrases, acronyms and images on a computer screen.

    Dr. Farwell's technique, like other nonsurgical probes of the brain's electrical activity, relies on readings taken by electrodes attached to the scalp.

    He has claimed 100 percent success rates in experiments using the technique for tasks like singling out Central Intelligence Agency agents who had been exposed to a mock
    espionage situation and Navy officers with medical expertise.

  • Mutant X -- Shirleym, 16:08:46 10/08/01 Mon
    I saw most of "Mutant X" last night (missed the first 15 minutes). Visually, it was interesting and the fight scene at the end had me laughing with delight when that thing the bad guy was swinging went through the mutant and hit the other bad guy. The keystone cops go futuristic. LOL

    The show has no emotional depth or energy for me, no intellectual stimulation there either, but I don't think it's supposed to. After all, it's based on a comic book, isn't it? Douglas O'Keefe is his dry, "bad" self It's so nice to see him again and now, knowing what a great person he is in real life it's an extra treat. :-)

    All that great color and movement of the actors - why did they let LFN get so stagnant in that area the last two seasons. Nobody moves better than Roy Dupuis and Peta Wilson (JMHO) and they just had them standing around looking tired. What a waste.

    Well, I'll tell you, MX kept my attention and my TV is set to show the WB station instead of USA network when my VCR goes on now (I was taping the credits to see if I recognized any names)

    So... I guess I liked it! :-)

    Since I've been seeing a lot of 'talk' here about 'Alias', I thought I'd share this. I get the Hollywood Reporter and they had a column about the show. Here's one part y'all would probably find interesting...

    Jennifer Garner ("Pearl Harbour") is the latest to follow in the tradition of La Femme Nikita, Lara Croft, Xena and "Dark Angel's" Max as she punches and kicks her way into the role of Sydney Bristow, a grad student recruited several years earlier by a supersecret spy agency. This agency is so secret that even Sydney isn't fully aware of who her bosses are or what side they're on.

    I personally didn't get to see the show as I work evenings although I do love 'Dark Angel'. (Caught it on an 'off nite' and started taping it)

    Anyhoo, if anyone wants the full article, just email me and I'll send it to ya! If there's enough interest, I'll go ahead and post it here under the reply section as it is kind of lengthy.

  • Wishes from Around the World 2001 -- Susan2, 15:55:42 10/04/01 Thu
    I know there are many here that aren't fans of Peta's, but I am doing something right now that I thought some of you might like to be involved in. I know *I* need something to do right now to know that things go on. So if your interested, please read on.

    WISHES FROM AROUND THE WORLD 2001

    As most of you know, Peta's 31st birthday is Nov 18th and approaching us quickly. With everything that is going on around us now, all the worries and stress of the latest events, I've decided that I want to do something to be reminded that life goes on as well as get in the upcoming holiday spirit. So once again I'd like to do Wishes From Around the World.

    What this is, is a gathering of Christmas greetings, well wishes, postcards, color art from another child, letters, etc from all over the world that will be sent from the fans of Peta Wilson to The Hospital for Sick Children, one of Peta's charities of choice, in honor of Peta's 31st birthday. The package then will be distributed to the children at Christmas time. I did this in 1999 and the hospital loved it. It really raised the spirit of the children who couldn't be home on Christmas.

    If you are a parent, encourage you children to get involved. Maybe they would like to ask for a penpal. If you are a teacher, let this be a class project. Have them make Christmas cards, color Christmas pictures. You can also send stickers, coloring books, colors and markers…anything that would be entertaining for a child enduring a hospital stay.

    In 1999, I received over 300 cards from people in places such as Canada, Sweden, Finland, USA and Spain as well as over 100 items such as mentioned above. I would like to see cards from even more countries this time. I believe this is more important that ever right now. This gesture takes very little money and only a small amount of your time. The reward of knowing you made a child smile at Christmas time will come back to you ten fold.

    If you would like to involve yourself in this holiday gesture in honor of Peta's birthday, please send your contributions to:

    Wishes From Around the World
    P.O. Box 155
    Sedalia, Kentucky USA 42079

    The deadline in which I would need to receive all items will be Monday, Dec 3rd. This is so I can get the package sent to The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada in time for it to arrive by Christmas.

    Get yourself involved. Get your children involved. Give a child another reason to smile and fill them with happiness and holiday cheer. What a wonderful way to say Happy Birthday to Peta.

    If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at admin@petawilson-online.com

  • Official Guidelines of the "Seraphin" Raffle -- Joyce, 21:22:42 10/01/01 Mon
    1. This is a Raffle for a location set visit to the filming of "Seraphin".
    2. The exact date of the visit will be determined by the studio. It will occur sometime between late January to early February. The winners will be given at least 3 weeks notice,
    prior to the actual date, in order to make travel arrangements.
    3. There will be two independent winners chosen at random from all Raffle ticket receipts. Both winners will visit the location set on the same day. They will be accompanied by Pierre Noiseux of Fondation Mira.
    4. This system was chosen because Pierre wants to maximize chances for each participant. Two winners means two chances to win.
    5. As the studio is only allowing two visitors, winners will not be allowed to bring additional guests.
    6. The location set visit is for “passive” viewing of the filming. Instructions by the filming crew and staff are to be followed explicitly.
    7. There is no guarantee that the winners will meet or talk with Roy Dupuis. (We certainly hope that they do have that opportunity.)
    8. Raffle tickets are $20 US or $30 CA each. Payment can be made with personal checks, money orders or by credit card. If payment is made through PayPal, there is a service charge.
    9. To purchase tickets, please email me first at: MiraCharity@aol.com
    10. Any check or money order payment MUST be received by December 3rd, 2001. If mail is received after December 3rd, you will not qualify for the Raffle and your mail will be returned unopened. Neither Joyce Wolf, Pierre Noixseux nor Fondation Mira assume any responsibility for the promptness of mail delivery, and can not be held liable. Mail early to avoid worrying.
    11. Credit card payments are accepted in the following two ways:
    A. Via PayPal, which charges 2.9% of the total and 30 cents per transaction. It is rather complicated so you will need an exact amount, per your ticket purchase, from me.
    B. Via telephone to me, whereby your purchase can be made without a service charge.
    Credit card payments are due by 9PM PST on Monday, December 3, 2001.
    13. On Tuesday, December 4, 2001, all Raffle ticket receipts will be placed in a container, mixed and then remixed. One receipt will be drawn by me, Joyce Wolf, thus producing the first winner. The remaining tickets will be mixed again. Then a second receipt will be drawn by me, producing the second winner.
    14. The winners will be announced on December 4, 2001 via email, mailing lists and message boards.
    15. All decisions by the governing board, which is comprised of Joyce Wolf and Pierre Noiseux, are final. By participating in this Raffle, you agree in full to the above conditions.

  • It's Good To Be Back :D -- Shirleym, 11:29:06 09/29/01 Sat
    It's so good to come back to the board and see everyone again. Shirlhub and I are in the process of selling one home and buying another and it's been non-stop controlled chaos, ever since I left for L.A.

    Welcome back Zzoo!!! :D

    How wonderful to see the message from Peta... and Roy's incredible interview in Nuvo magazine... and the ph -ph-photoooooooohs! :P~~~~~~~~~``{{{THUD}}}

    I came back from visiting my family around the 5th, and a few days later, my husband and I went house hunting closer to NYC.

    That was on the 10th. We were going to look at a house, stay in NYC at our apartment that night, he'd do his work at the recording studio Tuesday, and Wednesday we'd come back.
    The best laid plans...

    The 10th was a warm day, but the heavy rain followed us all the way east on our drive. We got there late afternoon and looked at the house (Shirlhubs third time, my first) and my husband took a half hour video tape inside and out. It was so peaceful there... with just a little rumbling of thunder in the distance now and then and a few drops of rain here and there. The area is lush with big pine trees... and rocks... and a lake...
    (sigh)

    We got to our apartment in the city late, ate dinner and went straight to bed.

    I don't go into the city much anymore. I liked it in the 70s and 80s, but lately I have a hard time with all the noise and crazyness, so I don't go unless I have a good reason for being there.

    Tuesday morning I woke up around 8:00 and went to the living room to watch a little TV. I'm a channel surfer (unless it's LFN! LOL) so I flipped around for about 45 minutes, waking up and thinking about the things I could get done that day...
    At about 8:45, I started hearing sirens. I could tell they were going downtown, but I didn't think anything of it because in New York City you ALWAYS hear sirens. "Damn!"... (I thought) "this is why I don't like coming to this city anymore. It's SO !@#$%^&* NOISY all the time..."

    The sirens kept coming in waves... and then a little before 9:00, just as I was beginning to wonder how big that fire or accident could be, I flipped to a channel that had the WTC north tower burning - smoke billowing out.

    "This doesn't look like 1993", I thought warily in my morning haze. I looked to the upper left corner of the screen...
    It said "LIVE".
    I leaned forward and looked out my window...
    There it was.

    When I heard an airplane had crashed into it, I assumed it was one of those tourist planes. The pilot must have had a heart attack, I thought. What a terrible shame.

    I woke up Shirlhub and told him to take a look at the TV. Then I went into the kitchen to make us coffee and a couple of minutes later I heard a huge, far off {{{BOOM}}}
    "Oh NOOOOOO!", I heard my husband say, and as I ran back into the living room and looked out the window again, I saw the huge fireball from the second crash. I was horrified. Oh no, it's spreading, I thought... Maybe the fuel from the first plane... This is just surreal. Those poor people.

    As I ran back into the bedroom, my husband looked at me with eyes as big as saucers and said, "Was that another plane!!?? I thought I saw another plane out the window - a big one - hit the second tower."

    I thought he must still be groggy. What did he mean, a second plane... "Get with it", I thought. This is NOT a time to be half dreaming. It's bad enough as it is.

    Then the announcer on the TV said it WAS another plane - a big one, and that there must be some huge foul up with the east coast air traffic control system...

    Uh uh~hhhhh, I thought. No..................... now I knew EXACTLY what this was...
    and I was horrified... and I wondered what was going to happen next... and what those people in the buildings were doing... and if charges had been planted all over downtown Manhattan.

    It was my first taste of war. War is big, overpowering, and terrifying. You feel like a bird trapped, not knowing which way to fly because any way could be the wrong way. I've been in some dangerous situations, but I always felt I had a fighting chance. I could use my wits, my agility, my will and my strength.
    At this moment, we were all at the mercy of fate.

    My husband and I watched the towers come down the same way we'd watched them go up years ago when we'd walk home after an all night recording session and see the early morning sun gleaming on them in the almost quiet New York streets...

    *
    *
    *
    *

    Now on our video tape is the beautiful peace of a lakeside home...
    and then the burning towers...
    A marker in time.
    A piece of history.
    I hope it wasn't for nothing.
    I hope the world becomes a better place because of this. I hope that good will come from evil.

    I'm so grateful to the cast of LFN for taking their characters seriously - as seriously as they could with some of the writing in the last couple of seasons. And especially to Roy Dupuis and Peta Wilson. They went for the "truth" in their characters and because of that, I can still watch the show and it doesn't seem trivial; even at a time like this...
    ESPECIALLY at a time like this.

    Here's to peace

  • OT/"Alias" -- Susan W, 23:39:46 09/30/01 Sun

    ...a.k.a. "LFN got secretly renewed and went to the major networks." Okay, it's not *exactly* the same...nothing could be...but what's not to like in a show that's so openly reaching out to LFN'ers? It even had its own "Gray" (the cute boyfriend who bit the dust), "Carla" (the girlfriend), and even...Daddy! The lead actress is very appealing, and I loved her red wig...she just has to remember to tuck it under her black cap next time during nighttime covert ops. I also liked the wall to wall music and the action shots. The previews showed her in a long, blonde wig in next week's show, and that was *really* mind bending. I say...bring on Michael!

    Other debuts:

    "The Agency" (Thursdays, 10 P.M., CBS) The first show in this series about the CIA was based on a scenario involving Fidel Castro, and I found it to be watchable. The script was smart and the action sequences were good, but the characters need work, IMO. I also found the atmosphere inside the Agency to be a little too bureaucratic/depressing--I'm not sure what exactly is causing this--the sets?--the way the interior is shot? I admire the show for being willing to take on real-life scenarios, but I have to wonder if this is workable in light of current events.

    "Thieves" (Fridays, 9 P.M., ABC) This is a more light-hearted action show about two thieves who work for the government. Good characters, action, and UST, but script? What script?-lol! Okay, I got lost somewhere along the way. Nevertheless, it was fun, and I enjoyed it.

    "UC: Undercover" (Sundays, 10:00 P.M., NBC) I just watched the first ten minutes, and it didn't grab me, but I'll give it another chance. The music sounded good, though.

    "Enterprise" (UPN) Ahhh...bliss. Our new captain looks like he was born to do this role. It's nice to know that some things in life are totally reliable...the "Star Trek" franchise being one of them.

    So, what did *you* think about the new shows?

    "Mutant X" airs here in the Washington area this next Saturday at 6:00 P.M. (strange time!) on channel 50, WFTY. Check your local listings--don't miss it! :-)

This little sucker is on the loose and my virus program (Trend PC-Cillan) is so busy quarantining everything that comes into my email that my email is effectively shut down. So far Trend's "fix tool" doesn't seem to be fixing it either. I've emailed them, but if their virus protection quarantines an infected email, they may never receive it, LOL. I'm starting to consider the old "format c/s" command. Sure wish I had copies of this ton of programs and graphics on my hard drive somewhere safe -- I'd do it.

    Was cleaning up my bookmarks and thought I would check out the USA Nikita page...it had been a very long time since I had visited. When I went there, I was surprised to see that they suspended LFN until October due to the WTC attack. Then I was surprised to see that all of the pics on the main page are just of Nikita...no Michael in sight. Just thought this was a really weird thing since he was just as important to the show (some would agrue he was more important than Nikita to the show's success!). Does this seem strange to anyone else?

The 2nd copy was in the Online Charity Auction last year. Unfortunately, that copy would only play in fast forward, so it couldn't be given out. This year at CQS4, the original winner graciously made another copy to replace the faulty one. I just received word that last year's Online winner no longer wants it. So....the only other copy of Matthew's Deleted Scene will be entered into this year's Online auction in progress now.

  • "The golden age of intelligence is before us" and "The shadowy world of Special Operations" -- Chgo, 21:26:07 09/20/01 Thu
    Check out the current issue of www.Salon.com for a number of thought-provoking articles on current affairs. Since the magazine is moving articles around every day at the moment, I thought I'd post two that may be of particular interest as replies.

    "The golden age of intelligence is before us"

    "In a world in which borders are dissolving and bad guys conceal bombs in their pockets or steal millions by means of computers, the intelligence business is set for a golden age," wrote Robert Kaplan back in 1998 for the Atlantic Monthly. That golden age may have begun for real last week, when the terror attack on New York and Washington spurred our political leaders to pledge a war against terrorism that will largely be fought by expanded intelligence capabilities and small stealth squads of special forces.

    "The shadowy world of Special Operations"

    Last week's attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon ushered in what some military theorists have dubbed the "fourth generation of warfare." To fight this new kind of war, most experts believe, the Pentagon will rely heavily on its Special Operations arm, the unconventional class of warriors who specialize in counterterrorism, with an emphasis on lightning raids, sabotage, kidnapping, deep reconnaissance and the training of foreign insurgents.

    The special operations community has long existed on the margins of the Pentagon, always in the shadows

    Dupuis happy chez lui again

    BRENDAN KELLY
    Montreal Gazette

    Saturday, September 22, 2001
    It was a striking scene. The setting was an ostentatious home in the tony suburb of Rosemère, just north of Laval, complete with in-ground swimming pool, an expansive, carefully manicured lawn and a private tennis court. Canadian actor Michael Ironside - who's starred in everything from Scanners to Starship Troopers - was standing at the side of the pool, dripping wet, wearing a Speedo and a bathrobe.

    Just inches from Ironside stood Roy Dupuis. The star of the television show Nikita was decked out in scruffy leather jacket and pants, and his biker-chic look was topped off by long, unruly hair and a face that hadn't seen a razor blade up close for a couple of days.

    This odd couple were in a major-league argument, part of a key scene being shot for the Hell's Angels-inspired miniseries The Last Chapter. In the CBC/Radio-Canada drama, Ironside and Dupuis play fictional biker bosses Bob Durrelle and Ross Desbiens, respectively, who start out as pals and then have a falling out. In the scene they were shooting this week, things are turning nasty.

    Director Richard Roy kept shooting the argument over and over, the kind of seemingly endless repetition that's the norm on most film shoots. But there was a significant twist here: from take to take, Dupuis switched from French to English. The $9.5-million, six-hour miniseries is being shot in both of Canada's official languages, a highly unusual undertaking.

    Producer Claudio Luca notes that it is like producing two six-hour projects, with twice as much shooting and two separate post-production processes.

    It is rare for CBC and Radio-Canada to collaborate closely on such a pricey project. And oddly enough, this drama, penned by Québécois author Luc Dionne (Omertà), was initially developed at the CBC in Toronto. Radio-Canada came on board later.

    Dupuis is doing all his own dialogue in both French and English. Later, after the director finally wraps the scene, Dupuis fires up a Camel Light and says he is happy to shoot a project in both languages. He is also one of only a handful of prominent francophone Quebec actors able to work easily in either language, with almost no trace of an accent in English.

    "Sometimes having to do everything twice isn't fun," Dupuis said. "And it's never exactly the same in the two languages. It does demand a lot of energy and concentration.

    "But at the end of the day, it's worth it. It'll be better in both languages. I've dubbed almost all of the TV series that I've done, and it's very frustrating for an actor to dub his work. You lose a lot."

    He Dubs Both Ways

    Dupuis is an equal-opportunity dubber - he's dubbed into both languages. He has dubbed his French work into English, including the phenomenally popular period series Les Filles de Caleb and the gay-themed movie Being at Home With Claude. He has also provided his voice for the French versions of his English TV shows, notably the miniseries Million Dollar Babies and Nikita.

    Dupuis has always moved easily between the two languages. One of his first major English-language roles was in the sci-fi thriller Screamers, directed by Christian Duguay and shot in Montreal in 1995 - and even then he sounded uncannily un-French. He learned his street-savvy English as a teenager when he spent three years with his family living in Kapuskasing, Ont.

    Dupuis first hit star status here in Quebec thanks to a string of top-rated series: the historical works Les Filles de Caleb and Blanche and the newsroom drama Scoop. His brooding, physical presence on screen set him apart from most of the actors here, and he added a sensual spark to a number of Québécois pictures in the early 1990s, including Being at Home With Claude (considered by most to be his stand-out film role so far) and Cap Tourmente.

    But he virtually disappeared from the Quebec film and TV scene over the past five years, spending almost all his time in Toronto starring opposite Australian actress Peta Wilson in the stylish espionage series Nikita. The show, which aired as La Femme Nikita on networks south of the border, ended production last year. But it has become a cult success story in the U.S. and many other countries around the globe, with Dupuis regularly receiving gushing letters from fans everywhere from Russia to Latin America.

    Now Dupuis is finally back shooting in his home town, and he couldn't be happier. After spending 41/2 years commuting weekly to Toronto, Dupuis appreciates being able to return home to his 1840s farmhouse just outside of Montreal after a day on the set.

    But he is also pleased to be working on more challenging fare and acting in French. Aside from The Last Chapter, he is shooting the film Un Homme et son Péché, a high-profile remake directed by Charles Binamé of one of the classics of Quebec culture, based on the 1939 novel by Claude-Henri Grignon. Currently in production in the Lanaudière region, the period piece also stars Pierre Lebeau, Karine Vanasse and Rémy Girard.

    Dupuis spent much of the summer renovating his house in the country, something he's been trying to do for years but simply didn't have the time for because of his day job on Nikita. He's enjoying the freedom of not being attached to a series, which is one reason he isn't particularly keen to sign on to another long-running TV project.

    "I think I've done that," Dupuis said. "You never say never, so we'll see. But I want to stay chez nous for a little while. I want to be able to go home at night after shooting. I also miss the theatre and I'd like to do something on stage. But it has to be a new work."

    Exploring a Text

    Dupuis, who studied at the National Theatre School in Montreal, hasn't been on stage in seven years. He is currently talking to people about starring in a new play, perhaps early next year.

    "What I really miss is the rehearsals," Dupuis said, his green-blue eyes flashing with something like emotion for the first time during the interview.

    "I don't really miss acting on stage. I miss the gang in a rehearsal hall, this sense of family, exploring a text, pushing things to the limit. Also, there's no doubt theatre writing is more audacious, less censored than TV writing. Anything is possible in the theatre."

    Dupuis also talks of taking off with a camera and shooting a little documentary.

    "I just feel like being able to choose what I want to do," he said.

    - The Last Chapter will air on CBC and Radio-Canada next March. Un Homme et son Péché will be released in Quebec theatres in December 2002.

  • Message from Peta Wilson -- Zzoo, 11:50:18 09/19/01 Wed
    Susan Hargrove's Peta Wilson On-Line newsletter contains a lovely message from Peta Wilson that Susan received from her. I don't know how many of you get the newsletter so I'll post the message here.

    "My condolences if you knew someone in the WTC...it's so sad that,
    that happened and the world is in such a combative state. I really
    hope that this is dealt with in the most peaceful manner, and such
    barbaric acts of terrorism are a thing of the past, our world
    becoming a place of peace with all people respecting themselves and
    each other, and making an effort to understand the beliefs and ways
    of the different cultures. I believe that all cultures have
    something Good within them to offer humankind. I believe that fear of
    the unknown and ignorance prevent the majority from drawing from the
    deep well of knowledge that civilization has to offer....When I see
    the news, read the newspaper it saddens me to see such
    HATE...negativity, distrust, hurt, just some of the ingredients of
    war. I ask myself, what can I do? Or a bigger question, What would
    God do? With some quiet reflection, for me the answer was to be the
    best I could be, to be a compassionate human being filled with loving
    kindness, have a strong faith in creation and an unshakeable belief
    in the things we can't necessarily see...To remember that something
    Divine is taking care of us, whether we are aware of it or not and
    TRUST that...I think we can make a difference individually, by the
    simplest of actions: the way we THINK! What we think, we create...I
    believe that a THOUGHT is matter and becomes our reality....so we
    therefore have the power to create the world we want..I want a world
    full of joy, a heavenly place....what if this is it? What if there
    is nothing beyond for us all...and this world is HEAVEN or HELL..and
    it's merely our thinking that keeps us in a state of one or the
    other...I live my life thinking about that...Anyway enough, my
    thoughts and prayers are with all my family on EARTH these days....I
    read once that when one is close to a strong enlightenment It can
    sometimes be very dark first, I would like to believe that that is
    happening to human consciousness world wide."

    I received this from a co-worker whom I've never even met. I liked the idea and thought maybe some people here might like it too.

    Though terrorists may have struck out at us as Americans, let us come together and show our unity. Let us show that though our arm may have been hurt, they can not dim the heart of America which rages bright. On Thursday, September 13, 2001 at 10:30 pm EST, walk out your door and
    light a candle or lantern to show the world that our spirit burns bright. Gather with loved ones or gather with neighbors but let our light burn in the night to show that we are united and that we remain strong.

    Please pass this on to anyone you know. Print it up and pass it to neighbors who may not have internet access, post it to message boards, clubs, news stations, anywhere and everywhere there is a PROUD American!

    Some memorable images: Our Congress on the steps of the U.S. Capitol, singing, "God Bless America"....a man standing not too far from the Pentagon, waving an American flag....New Yorkers walking resolutely over the bridges leading out of Manhattan....a clearly shaken Yassar Arafat.

    The smallest gesture from foreign citizens and governments is meaningful....flowers left at an embassy....the counting of hospital beds....donations of blood. It is noticed and appreciated.

    Another day teaching democracy: to my class of eager eight year olds, "Please stand for the pledge...it seems especially meaningful today, doesn't it?" I turn and face the chalkboard, waving my right arm conspicuosly up and down: "Right hand over heart...RIGHT hand...that's it. We put our hands over our hearts to show our love for our country." On any other day, I might talk about the need to show respect for the flag, because "people have died for our country". I don't have the heart for that today. I turn and face the flag, along with my class. "I pledge allegiance..." we recite. My eyes well up with tears. I think: must...maintain...control. Although my eyes are damp throughout, my tears do not spill over. Ahhh...victory. I return my hand to my side and turn to see a colleague waiting patiently for me. "Are you all right?" she gently inquires. "Yes", I reply. I am definitely all right.

  • A strange, sad day -- Susan W, 18:28:12 09/11/01 Tue
    I was teaching my class of third graders in Baltimore City when I heard the initial news circulate via the grapevine--that there had been an "explosion" at the WTC--and I thought that it would be something like the previous terrorist attack there. When I took my kids downstairs to lunch, there were parents lined up at the door, waiting for their children--an unusual sight, but I still didn't "get it". At lunch, I saw the horrific pictures on the T.V., trying along with everyone else to absorb what had happened. After, I was waiting with the few children that were left--we were trying to shelter them, but they had heard enough about it to be worried--I had to assure them that they were safe at school, that the "bad guys" did not appear to be targeting school children. The most haunting question that I was asked: "Is it over?" I said to my principal, "This is our Pearl Harbor" and she replied "This is worse." I drove home a short time later--traffic was being diverted from downtown Baltimore, the police were out in force, and I saw some soldiers out on the street. Driving by Baltimore-Washington Int'l airport was eerie--I drive right alongside the flight path, and normally I delight in watching the planes land and depart. There was nothing today but empty skies. The area around our Maryland state house in Annapolis was evacuated and the Naval Academy was locked down--no one in or out. My brother and his wife serve as a "host family" for two of the midshshipmen, and my sister-in-law wanted them at the house if at all possible, but no luck. My brother is up in Boston on business, and will try to leave tomorrow. He told me a few weeks ago that he either has (or is competing for, I can't remember) the contract to renovate the Pentagon, and I thought--now he really has his work cut out for him.

    I've been to the WTC--I remember an ear-popping, very fast elevator ride and stunning views. From street level, I used to fully tilt my head up to the sky to see the tops of the twin towers. Lower Manhattan will look very strange to my eyes from now on.

    Hugs to you all. This was a tough day.

  • Tiny LFN-ish tidbit -- Chgo, 10:10:09 09/03/01 Mon
    ...excerpts from a review of the new fall TV shows in yesterday's Chicago-Sun-Times by Phil Rosenthal, TV critic:

    Some of what you need to know about the new fall TV season:

    *Fox's "24," CBS' "The Agency," ABC's "Alias," NBC's "UC: Undercover" and ABC's "Thieves" are all about federal agents of one sort or another who track dangerous criminals and/or try to thwart crime.
    *CBS' "Wolf Lake" is a show about people who turn into wolves. It is the second hardest show to believe after ABC's "Alias," a show about a college student who winds up as a secret agent.
    *"Alias," from "Felicity" creator J.J. Abrams, has been nicknamed "La Femme Felicity." Another good name for it would be "UC: Undercover," but that's already taken by NBC.

  • CQS4 Panels: Carlo Rota -- Susan W., 23:06:05 09/02/01 Sun

    It's time for another walk down memory lane. :-)

    Saturday, May 26th...When I first saw Carlo up on the podium, I got a big, goofy grin on my face. Why? Well, if you've ever met Carlo, or seen him in action, you need no explanation. If you haven't...just think of all of the very best points of Mick Schtoppel...the high energy gregariousness, the zaniness, the "Laissez les bon temps roulet" party-animal kind of attitude...combined with a very UN-Mick like level of high intelligence, sophistication, and savvy humor. He's the sort of person who can give you nothing more than a certain LOOK as he walks into a room, and he will have you in stiches. Everyone perked up as he took to the stage and started to pace restlessly about.

    Not one to be shy, Carlo decided to get the ball rolling by humorously tweaking the fans: "Let's not have any of those innocent questions...let's get to the nitty gritty. Ask me who I'm sleeping with!" (Big roar of laughter from the audience!)

    Suddenly, the audience fell quiet...a fan's cell phone was ringing. Oh, NO!...but Carlo knew just what to do...answer it, of course! He strode over, plucked it right out of the surprised fan's hand, and said (to the presumably unsuspecting caller), "Hello! I'm Carlo Rota!" :O)

    Later, when asked about a detail from a particular episode, he responded, "I have to confess something...I don't really read the entire script." (chuckles from the audience). A fan gushed, "I just loved guys with bald heads...can I touch your head?" Carlo bantered back: "Is that all you want to touch?" He further clarified, "I do NOT have any animal print boxers on...actually I'm not wearing any underwear...I never wear underwear at conventions...it's just easier that way." LOL

    Commenting on the types of roles he tends to get offered, he said, "I mostly get Euro bad guys." He stated that all of the "bathroom stuff" from "View Of The Garden" was ad-libbed. Finally, he joked to a fan, "[After] five seasons of Nikita--you want me to start explaining it?"

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Well, Carlo--if anyone could, I would vote for YOU. :-)
    I'll put some more details from his panel concerning season five in the reply.
  • OT/Movie: "The Deep End" -- Susan W., 22:18:36 09/02/01 Sun
    Has anyone else seen the movie, "The Deep End" yet? I saw it today and I was really impressed. It's a high profile indie suspense film starring Tilda Swinton and Goran Visnjic (who plays the very swoon-worthy Dr. Luka Kovac on "E.R."). It tells the tale of a mother who tries to cover up the accidental death of her son's gay lover, and is blackmailed in the process (Visnjic portrays the blackmailer). The direction is top notch, and the cinematography, done on location at Lake Tahoe, is simply gorgeous--each scene is so beautifully framed that it looks like a work of art. Although I thought about Alberta for the female lead (and I think she certainly would have enjoyed the role), Tilda Swinton did such an outstanding job that she is already being mentioned as a possible Oscar candidate. You really can put yourself in her shoes as she deals, all by herself, with the unfolding tragedy. I really like Goran Visnjic as an actor--I'm a big "E.R." fan, and he has that combination of solid acting skills, sex appeal, and physicality that put him in the same league as Roy Dupuis....and that's the problem. Being an R.D. fan, it's hard to watch this movie without being very aware of just how good this role would have been for him. It requires quite a range, going from slimy blackmailer to compassionate friend, with a definite sexual undercurrant along the way--just R.D.'s cup of tea, I think. If he wasn't considered for it, he sure as heck should have been.
    So, overall, if suspense movies are your thing, this might be one for you to check out.
    We've been having absolutely lovely weather this weekend here in Maryland. I hung out at the beach with my brother and sister-in-law yesterday, enjoying both their company and the beautiful sunny day. Here's wishing all of you a happy Labor Day!
    Susan W, I just want to thank you so much, once again, from the bottom of my heart for providing this message board, where I can continue to play with you and my other LFN friends old, and new. It's nice to know you're all still out there and kicking. :D
    Just letting you all know that TNT is running the Witchblade Marathon today from 10 AM to 10 PM. Included is the 2 hour movie followed by the 11 episodes.
    Personally I've been enjoying the unique mixture of cop drama and the supernatural connection theme that runs throughout the episodes. Yancy Butler is quite compelling as a New York cop. And there is a good bit of eye candy including Ian, Jake and Conchobar.
    If you have the time, tune in. If nothing else, it's amusing to pick out LFN alumni, sets, and Toronto locations. :)
    I was told I could say "pussy" here as long as we talked about Nikita's cat.
    I think she should have gotten a black cat, but that's just my preference.
    Yes, yes, I know--you're bored, you're tired, you're cranky, and who knows what else, and all because you haven't seen any new R.D. pictures, in oh say, the last 24 hours. ;-)
    Well run, don't walk, to Skippy's link over at The Royettes MB. Joyce has kindly posted a full page of her Defi-Vision pics at The Farmhouse, and if THAT doesn't pick you up, there's no hope for you, lol.
  • Completely OT, but I found this interesting... WSTIAU! -- Shirleym, 12:48:56 08/27/01 Mon
    From Cecil's Mailbag by the Straight Dope Science Advisory Board
    Why do people say, "Hear, hear"?
    Dear Straight Dope:
    When you agree with someone, do you say "Here Here!" or "Hear Hear" ? And what does it mean? What is the origin of "Here Here" or "Hear Hear"? --Tymoma195
    SDSTAFF Veg replies:
    The correct term is, "hear, hear!" It is an abbreviation for "hear, all ye good people, hear what this brilliant and eloquent speaker has to say!"
    Of course, if the speaker is actually asking a question, such as "and just where do you think we should open the new strip club?" it's not hard to imagine that at least one yahoo in attendance might yell, "here, here!" But this would be the exception that proves the rule.
