  • Missing LFN -- Erin, 13:48:37 01/05/02 Sat
    Well, it's January once again and it's made me particularly nostalgic for LFN. After the hustle and bustle of the Holiday season, come January I feel a little depressed. For the past 5 years I have had the new season of LFN to look forward to and it always made me feel a little better. I was always looked forward to the new season, wondering what surprises were in store and of course seeing Michael again. Guess I will have to rely on my tapes to keep me warm on the cold winter nights to come. Oh, and there's my new DVD player and the hopefully soon to be released LFN DVDs.

  • If you've been there -- Zzoo, 22:36:02 12/31/01 Mon
    For those who have visited Montreal and Toronto during the Cons, there are two movies I've seen recently (one is old) that made me instantly nostalgic for Canada. Check out The Score with Robert DeNiro, Marlon Brando, and Edward Norton. It's set in Montreal's old town. I also watched The Boondock Saints, which I had seen before and really liked, with Willem Dafoe in a totally outrageous role, and our own Carlo Rotto doing a great, and funny Mafia turn. It is set in Toronto. Supposedly the film is set in south Boston, and I'm sure a few set up shots were, LOL, but those black squirrels racing around the park with the Toronto waterfront in the background were a dead giveaway to where the film was really made. Here's wishing our Canadian cousins a Happy New Year despite the fact that they are obviously taking over the world, beginning with Hollywood, LOL.

    And a Happy New Year to the rest of you as well.

    Hugs,

  • I got a question about English... -- Fenja, 08:12:31 01/07/02 Mon
    I had a little discussion with my brother's wife Karin yesterday.
    She asked me what is the correct way to tell a person that you feel sorry for him. I said "poor you". She told me I was wrong because her mother had said that to a housemaid(?) in a hotelroom in USA, and she got mad at her. She said "poor you" because there was alot to clean up. She didn't mean "poor you, you must not have a lot of money...".
    I asked Karin what she meant the correct answer was and she said "I feel sorry for you". I thought you could use both comments in this situation. And I didn't think "poor you" was an insult". Maybe the housemaid was just annoyed because there was alot to clean up and didn't like getting comments about it! So who's right here?

  • The Words -- Susan W, 00:46:03 12/16/01 Sun

    First, did anyone else see the Saturday Night Live skit on the bin Laden tape? I knew that they would do one, but was left scratching my head as to how they would make it *funny*. Well, they did--by pointing out that bin Laden, who is so eager to promote martyrdom among his followers, is himself so conspicuously alive. I say, let's not deny the man his martyrdom one minute longer!

    Oh, what a scream--they just had Mayor Giuliani on "Weekend Update", and he was singing "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?" with Jimmy and Tina (complete with her "Miss Liberty" crown and torch). He's such a good sport.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    "It wasn't all a lie..."
    Those were the words that I heard two weeks ago while watching...not LFN, but "The Agency", a show for which I have developed a fondness. It was in an episode called "Nocturne", which involved a deep cover female Al Qaeda operative who was getting cozy with Agency higher-up Jackson Haisley, played by Will Patton. He didn't report his involvement with her to the Agency when they first started dating, partly because the relationship was just developing, and partly because he wanted to delay putting her through the rather intensive (and intrusive) background check which would be required. He gets found out, and the background check begins, much to his annoyance and consternation. The Agency concocts a plot to expose her if she is indeed an agent, and she passes it with flying colors--only to be exposed in the end, rather painfully, by Jackson himself. It was nice to watch the conflict in emotions as he realized in growing horror that he had been consorting with a Qaeda operative, that he was going to lose a woman that he was starting to care about very much, and that he had to his job regardless. It was an interesting dilemma that would have fit very comfortably into an LFN episode. As the woman was being led away at the end, she said, without turning around, "It wasn't all a lie". Somehow, it didn't seem nearly as believable coming from her as it did from Michael. It sure was nice to hear the reference to LFN, though...it makes me think that LFN has had more friends in the creative community than we ever knew about.
    It's rather well known that the show "The Agency" has a cooperative relationship with the CIA, which allowed the show to film some shots on location. What's less well known is that you can see actual Agency employees in some shots--but I'm assuming that you wouldn't see enough to identify them. One of the things that I like about the show is that it is good at developing quirky characters--probably the best of which so far has been "the nose"--the chemist who is in charge of reproducing scents. LFN often just showed us the finished product (such as Michael's I.D.), but "The Agency" shows how the product gets made and who makes it. It's an interesting avenue that LFN chose not to explore--just an example of how shows on similar themes can have a very different focus.
  • Does anybody know how to..... -- SandyB, 23:17:00 12/24/01 Mon
    Happy Holidays!!
    Checking email and the board this Christmas Eve. Have two questsions.
    1. Has anyone heard anything about Chris Heyn's book? I haven't gotten into his board lately. Tried awhile back and it was late at night and taking too long.
    2. This is the question I really need an answer to. I don't know what happened when I got into a couple of websites or else a company that has my email address gave it to others, but I got into Legos.com and wb.com. I think that was it. Anyway, since 12/17 I have been getting all sorts of emails from sites to sell me something, let me win something and all sorts of notices that I don't need on my computer. I'm getting emails from people I have no clue who they are. I don't open just delete. Right now I have 63 messages in my inbasket. About 15 are legitimate messages from people I know. My question is...how I can I get this crap stopped without having to change my email address? Anybody know? Will deleting all my cookies (if I don't know what they belong to) help? I don't want to open any to see if they have a 'if you don't want to get this again' message. Do they not send it if you send those negative replies back?
    Guess I'll go and finish getting ready for tomorrow. Getting ready to make Buttermilk coffee cake for breakfast is what I have to do. Can you smell the cinnamon? I'd send you all a piece if I could.
    Have a great holiday season!! And thanks to anybody that answers. I will be eternally grateful.
    The nominees for the Golden Globe awards were announced last Thursday, December 20th. Among the nominees for best drama series were two spy-oriented shows: "Alias", and Joel Surnow's "24". Congratulations to Joel Surnow, along with Michael Loceff, for their show's nomination! I have to admit that while the nomination for the widely admired "24" didn't surprise me, the one for "Alias" did--and pleasantly so.
    I also noticed that John Cameron Mitchell, one of Alberta Watson's fellow actors in "Hedwig and the Angry Inch", got a nomination for best actor-musical or comedy. I spotted some "Hedwig" tapes recently at my local Hollywood Video store (...love those five day rentals for every movie or DVD. Take a hint, Blockbuster!)
    "The Seraphin Raffle" recently organised by Joyce Wolf was a great
    success and fundraised 16,085 $CA on the behalf of our Foundation.
    We would like to congratulate the winners, Velvet and Browneyes, who
    will have the opportunity, coming January, to meet with Roy Dupuis on
    the set of "Seraphin".
    We are really aware of the time and energy consumption that Joyce had to
    put in to turn that event into that humongous success.
    Thank you again at all the participants of the Raffle. It is through
    these contributions and these gestures that Mira has, for the last 21
    A very merry Christmas and happy holidays to all friends of the board. After a lot of frantic, last-minute dashing about, I finally got to enjoy a relaxed holiday with my family here at home. Ahh, Christmas in Maryland--the flowers are still cheerfully blooming--it's always a little strange for this New England native, but no complaints. My favorite gift this year is my new DVD player (...and I'll bet that I'm not the only one who got one.) Bring on the LFN DVD's! :-)
    To our U.S. and allied service members around the globe, along with all of our "Michaels and Nikitas" (operatives): Thank you so much for protecting us, and for making all of the necessary sacrifices that must be made. You've done (and continue to do) a terrific job, and you make us proud of you every day.
  • LCA Part 3 -- Shirleym, 12:37:13 12/07/01 Fri
    Correction from the last debriefing: Alan's name is VAN Sprang, not Von Sprang. Sorry about that. (:*
    Saturday evening, after the inspiring efforts of all those stars selling their cans, Minuet, L and I decided to go for Chinese food and managed to find probably the worst Chinese Restaurant in all of Toronto. We searched through little, breaded pork balls in vain for tiny morsels of pork, politely chewed our way through half cooked noodles and generally put on our best "everything's fine" faces to get through it. Next time I'm calling Roy to find out where the good Chinese restaurant's are...
    Or I guess I could just ask Jon Cassar... :P
    Ok, I'll have *Zzoo* ask Jon Cassar since she seems to like men who look like handsome owls. *g*
    I do have to say though, that the food in the hotel restaurant was very good; much better than I thought a Day's Inn's food would be. And the french fries - oh yummmmmm! They were absolutely *deeeeeeeelicious* there. So delicately crispy on the outside and so light on the inside. And the taste was out of this world. I'd go back sometime just for those.
    Something I forgot to tell you about Saturday was that JC and the other directors were talking about how one of their most difficult jobs as directors is juggling the egos of the actors with things like who gets on set first when they're shooting a scene. I don't remember all the details, but it seems that nobody wants to be on set first because then they have to stand around waiting for everyone else, so a principal actor will be called on set, get there, see no one else has arrived yet and say, "nobody else is here yet, I'm going back to my dressing room". Then another principal will get there and be miffed because the first one's not there, and then it takes the first one forever to come back, etc., etc. But keeping people happy on set is important for getting good scenes, so they told us a few of the little tricks and techniques they use for solving these problems, but I can't remember what they were. It sounded a lot like how you take care of 4 year olds. (Madeline would have been proud.) *g* It was interesting to hear them say that usually, just directing the acting itself is not enough to do a director's job well.
    So, on to Sunday and the cast of Mutant X, who came and answered questions from the audience and entertained us with their coke cans. John Shea, who played Lex Luthor on The Adventures of Lois and Clark and who plays "Adam" on Mutant X, was incredibly calm, kind and informative in his answers; holding his baby daughter , Miranda, through the whole thing. He explained to us how he does as much artistic work (stage, etc.) as he can until his money starts to get low and then he goes back to TV to make more. He said that most TV shows are contracted to make 13 episodes (if they're lucky) to start with and then have to see if they're picked up for more. That leaves the actors hanging, not knowing what's going to happen. But MX was contracted to make some unheard-of number of eps, like 44 episodes from the get go and so he said he accepted the role of Adam because it was such a sure thing financially and I think he also said that the people making it were all so good at what they did that he felt they'd do a good job with the show.
    Victoria Pratt who plays "Shalimar" is a beautiful, bright woman with a kind and mischievous sense of humor, (none of which comes across in the show IMO). What a waste. She was absolutely delightful and is married to TJ Scott who did some directing on LFN (Noise, Third Party Ripoff). She was explaining that they were sitting around the table at a meeting early on and they were trying to decide what kind of device they (the mutants and Adam) should use to communicate with. They thought of and tossed out a lot of ideas for one reason or another - this one didn't look cool enough - that one would interfere with some of the costumes, etc. etc.. Then they thought of a ring, and she showed them her wedding ring (she and her husband had designed each others' rings) and said, "What about something like this?" She said before she knew it and to her surprise, they'd had rings made up for the cast EXACTLY like hers. She let the entire audience pass her ring around so we could all take a look at it up close.
    When it got to Forbes March, who plays "Jesse" on the show, Jon Cassar asked him to introduce himself and describe his character. Now - FM had a hangover from drinking too much the night before and he was looking a little pale. He thought for a while and looked at us shyly from under the brim of his cap, trying to get his brains together. Finally he said something like, "Well....... my body can do this thing............. where I can get really really hard...?"
    Ooooooooookay, I don't think I need to tell you what happened after that. >;) What an uproar from the audience. I know *I* was certainly doing some woooooo hooooooooing and clapping myself. LOL The poor guy didn't have a clue what he'd said for a few seconds, but when he caught on (and when the clapping finally died down), he said, "But I get really *soft* too".
    I guess mutants are just human too... ;-)
    Victor Webster, the cutiepie who plays "Brennan", came with his dog, Buddah, who apparently goes wherever Victor goes and who JC said is one of the family on the set of MX now. He's a medium-small dog and has a lovely calm temperament, which probably accounts for the name. Victor was great, has a verrrrrrrrrrrrry nice body, is quite at ease in his own skin, and seems to be very down to earth and kind as well. He did a fight scene for us with John Shea that they'd just filmed a couple of days earlier. It was quite powerful with these two men using quite a bit of floor space for the mock fight and making all the grunting sounds of being punched and kicked. They really put everything into it for us.
    When asked why he'd wanted to be in MX, Victor said that as a kid, he'd loved action comics and broke many a bone doing things like jumping of the roof with a towel for a cape, etc. etc.
    When it came time to sell coke cans, John Shea stood on his head to sell his, and Victor... hmmmmm... I seem to remember him with his shirt off and a can of coke down his pants...
    He also threw in a scene (that had just been aired before LCA so anyone watching the show had just seen it) that he'd done with Lauren Lee Smith ("Emma") that he offered to re-do with the lucky winner of his can and they'd get it on video tape too! That was fun to watch because it had been a subtle scene in a bar, but he played it up a bit with the winner, doing things like playing with her hair and other distracting things while she was trying to read her lines.
    Two days on the set of Mutant X (among many other things) were auctioned off. I think they went for something like $2,000 and $4,000 and Jon Cassar commented that a day on the set of that show would probably never be that cheap again.
    Although I turned out not to be a big fan of the show, I found the whole thing fascinating.
    To be continued...
    This thing just never ends, does it. :P
  • Hi all! -- Petty, 19:46:46 11/15/01 Thu
    Its been a long time since I posted on any LFN MB but here goes.
    I went through a verrrrry loooong period of denial, just not believing that the show was gone. I'm still not out of the woods yet, but...
    I admire everyone's courage on this board to move on and I understand things change. I keep reading about everyone moving on to other shows and I'm just not ready to do that yet.
    I just got too emotionally involved in LFN, damn it all! Now I read on Chris's board that some fans are planning a Witchblade con in Toronto next year. Now that I'm definitely not up to. No offense to WB fans out there. I've watched it a couple of times but just couldn't get into it. I watched it mainly for the recycled LFN props that the production crew were using.
    Please forgive this message, I'm just PMSing and was feeling very low right about now.
    On an OT related matter, I recently made the decision to seek therapy (to deal with another matter that I've kept locked in my heart for over 40 years) because my defensive mechanisms were always the same: anger, denial and then shame. I was always resetting these three feelings in that order. I've determined that LFN was when I was going through my "denial" stage and now I'm smack dab in the middle of facing my feelings and I just couldn't cope with it alone. I guess I had my own "Section" that I had to break out of. Now that I'm out, I need to figure out where do I go from here.
    As always you guys are the best. A lot of the "regulars" who used to post have moved on to other things and interests and that's a good thing. I still see a few familiar faces on here.
    Thank u Susan W for this!
    I still have the $hit load of music I've collected from my LFN obsession that I still listen to and my tapes of the episodes. I'm listening to "Love Thieves" right now as I type this. That song always did make me cry. For the longest time I couldn't even listen to it because it took me back to Season 1 Nikita and brought back so many memories.
    But I had to post on a LFN MB just for old times sake.
    Didn't mean to go on and on, but as always I'm not crying because LFN is over. I'm still happy that a guy by the name of Roy Dupuis said yes to playing Michael, easily the most fascinating character I've ever come across in any medium (be it movie, TV show or work of fiction). I'm still peeling the layers from Michael Samuelle. Thank you Roy Dupuis for your "ownership" of this character.
    Thank you PW for Nikita. I was with you in the beginning even if the writers found it necessary to take Nikita in another direction by show's end. I was ambivalent about you when the last note of the theme song played on March 4, 2001.
    Send some hugs my way. I'll be back to chat with you from time to time. Just don't ask me to do another show right now.
    Some of you went on the website using the URL I put on in a previous message and saw the pictures of what I had made. I printed out one of those pictures and cut it out. Then I drew and out line of what an inside of a storm cellar would look like, stair and everything included. I made two of these drawings and glued one of them on top of the other. Then I cut a rectangular hole in the middle so you can see under to the second one. Then, I placed the picture of the plaque I made in there. When I thought about where this plaque might be kept, I immediately thought of a storm cellar. I am going to post a picture of in the next few days. After you look at this new picture, if anyone wants me to make them one, I will. Or if you would want to save the new picture onto your computer, that is fine with me.
  • I'm ba-ack! -- Susan W., 23:05:22 11/26/01 Mon
    First, apologies to all assembled for my absence of late. I've had to put in many, many hours at work lately, and I've been suffering from related exhaustion, of the "just point me to the nearest bed and let me collapse" variety--an occupational hazard, I guess. So it will take me a day or two to catch up. I hope that all of my fellow "south of the border" friends had a very happy Thanksgiving--as I told a colleague, "Four days...it's a start", lol. I was over at my brother's house with my mom, sister-in-law, niece and nephew, both back from college, and a cute, intelligent, personable guest...only 29, though. ;-) The next day I helped my brother rake leaves...10 fully stuffed bags for me out of (probably) more than a hundred...he lives in the middle of a forest, and there are times in the fall when it looks like it's raining leaves, they come down that heavily. So (of course) it got me to thinking about Monsieur Dupuis up there in the Canadian countryside...do you suppose that he has to do any raking? And don't you think that poor man could use some help? ;-) (...'though it's probably snowing up there by now...)
    I want to thank all of you that gave me your opinion. I really appreciated it. I am going to make a video of what I made in places that have to do with the purpose of the plaque I made. I am going to probably make my own logo. I just wanted to say again, that if anyone would like me to make a video tape of it for them, I would be more than happy to. Again, I appreciated the thoughts and advice that were posted.
  • Video of my fanart or invention -- Erin Goeller, 10:15:18 11/26/01 Mon
    Hello, everyone. I thought those of you who looked at my pictures of what I made at the URL I posted might want to know that I am going to make a video tape with what I made on it. I recently got a video camera and am going to use that to make a video. What I thought I might do is put the logo for LFN at the beginning of the tape and then tape what I made in different places that has to do with it's purpose for at least an hour on the tape, then at the end put part of the credits. I don't know if this is allowed or not. If that is not, please someone let me know. Also, if anyone would like me to make a video of what I made for them to have, I would be glad to do it. I have plenty of blank video tapes.
    I was wondering if Peta Wilson is still in a relationship with Damian Harris. The reason, I ask is because the other day I was reading people magazine, and there was an article about Richard Harris. It says he has a twelve year old granddaughter, who's father is his son Damian. I just found that interesting. I was just curious if they are still together.
    I liked it...thumbs up to Bob Cochran and Joel Surnow. Thought it was intelligent and I liked the weaving of all of the story lines. Great acting by the lead male (so sorry, his name has totally escaped me...and I should know it...my old age is showing). But I have a really dumb concern: if the whole season spans just 24 hours, how many wardrobe changes can there be??? Would love to know how the person in charge of costumes handled this unusual challenge.
  • Fanart or Inventions inspired by LFN -- Erin Goeller, 00:46:26 11/19/01 Mon
    When, the show was on I came up with several things that were considered Fanart. Then, there were somethings that I came up with that I consider high-tech types of inventions inspired by the show. I recently bought a used video camera, which I am very happy about. About a month ago, I made something else inspired by the show. Now that I am have a video camera, I am going to make a tape of it. What I made is a type of plaques with straw on it. There is more to it, but it is complicated. The use for it I came up with is that it takes the strands that have broken off and are hanging form the strip and forms it into a triangle so that the lose strands will hold together. I came up with more ideas for it. I am going to probably record the credits at the end of a LFN rerun and then tape what I made after that on a tape. I am going to post a picture of what I made on a Yahoo Photo page in the next few days. I will post the URL, so that anyone can look at the photo if they want, in another post.
  • Looks like Mutant X actors appreciate our viewership (article inside) -- Alexa, 16:11:57 11/15/01 Thu
    Well I'm just delurking for a sec to bring y'all this little tidbit from sci-fi.com. Enjoy!
    Victoria Pratt told SCI FI Wire that she's both "pleased and surprised" that Mutant X is a breakout hit. "We'd been plugging away for 13 episodes and then they finally came on the air," Pratt said. "It was like, 'Wow! People can finally watch it now,' and they are watching it, which is great."
    Mutant X debuted in October and quickly emerged as the top-rated dramatic hour in first-run syndication. Based on an idea from Marvel Comics boss Avi Arad, the show centers on Mutant X, an organization that seeks to protect a group of genetically engineered humans from themselves and the government. John Shea stars as Adam, the wealthy scientist who heads up Mutant X, while Pratt plays Shalimar Fox, a mutant with feral abilities who serves as Adam's closest ally.
    Pratt — whose credits include the role of Sarge on Cleopatra 2525 and guest stints on Xena: Warrior Princess and First Wave — thinks she can explain Mutant X's success.
    "A lot of fans came to us because Xena and Cleo are no longer on the air," she said. "We also have a lot of fans that came to us from La Femme Nikita, because the same production company that did that is doing Mutant X. I also think we got a lot of comic book fans who are watching our show because of the comic book connection. That's a lot of people, and I think everybody's getting something different out of it."
  • LCA part 2 -- Shirleym, 16:23:33 11/13/01 Tue
    So... let's see, I forgot to tell you that when we got there on Friday, Jim and Jeff Murin were giving a talk on script-writing and submission. I only got there for the very end of the talk, but it seemed like they'd done a great job with it and that it had been very informative. You could see they were passionate and excited by the subject and they really got down to the fine points and answered a lot of questions from the audience. For example, I caught them talking at the very end about, when writing a script, you NEVER write, "soandso RUNS across the street". They said you have to describe HOW soandso runs across the street. It all has to be there in the script.
    So all this time I thought that Roy and Peta had ... well... as they say in this part of Pennsylvania, "different" ways of running.
    Now I see it was all right there in the script-writing. They must have actually WRITTEN "Michael runs like a wood nymph to the drain pipe" or... "Nikita runs like a chicken to the freight elevator".
    Who knew???... :P
    Hooooooookay...
    So
    Friday night after the wrap reels Minuet, L and I were exhauseted and went to bed...
    And I would just like to stress that I did NOT stay up till 2:00 am discussing Roy Dupuis' many talents and virtues...
    Ummmmm ummmm~mmmmmmm ... not me... noooooooooooooooooo SIR.
    Saturday, I skipped the opening ceremonies and just caught a bit of some of the auctioning before the lunch break. This is where I got initiated into exactly what LCA is all about. I knew it was an auction to raise money for charity, but what I DIDN'T know was the bit about the actors from various shows auctioning off Coke cans. Yes, one of the highlights of this event is that each participating actor does "whatever it takes" to get as much money for a regular red can of Coke as they possibly can.
    Take Alan Von Sprang- (I'll TAKE him, I'll TAKE him!!)
    He's the actor who morphed into Michael in "Under the Influence". I had just seen that episode a couple of days earlier, so when I saw him there at LCA, I recognized him immediately. (He's a LOT better- looking in person that he was on LFN.) He was very good with the auctioneering and has this intense, serious look on his face all the time (slightly knitted brow) and then every once in a while he smiles and you can see that he really doesn't take himself all that seriously. He was actually doing auctioning for "Earth Final Conflict" where he wears a lot of makeup and plays an alien now.
    After all the EFC things were auctioned, he started taking bids on his can of coke. He was doing quite well with it for a while, but then things slowed down a bit and, as I remember, he asked what he could do to bring the bid up. "MORPH into MICHAEL and I'll give you everything I've GOT!!", I wanted to say... but I hadn't brought enough money to bid on what I wanted and his coke can too.
    Little by little, he took off all his clothes, getting more and more money for his coke can as he went along... until he was down to his "skivies" (as Mick would say) and he held the can up and sauntered back and forth across the floor with his trousers down around his ankles, that intense look on his face, just as though he were dressed in a suit walking down 5th Ave. As I remember, he got a good amount (over $1,000, I think) for his can, which (by the way) is REALLY nice... :P~~~~~~~~~~~~~~```
    After that there was a directors' panel with John Bell, James Rait, Ted Hanlon, Terry Ingram, (and Jon Cassar standing by as he lead the discussion). There were a lot of interesting things discussed that I don't remember all of right now, but I DO remember a couple of things that Jon Cassar said. One of them was that he was NOT happy with directors who don't watch the previous episodes of a show they're going to direct. (GO JC!!!) I asked him if he also wasn't very happy with *writers who don't bother to watch previous eps as well. He hesitated for a moment and then said... "You could say that, yes". ;)
    There was some discussion about how Producers will look through a director's reel to see if they like his work, but they'll fast forward through it, because no one has the time in the TV business to spend an hour just watching a tape.
    He also said that directors are always trying to "top" what's already been done in a show - always trying to prove themselves - to do something new and different.
    About Roy, he said that Roy knew the character of Michael better than anyone else and guarded that character very carefully. He said that after a while, he (JC) got to know the character of Michael well too and could tell a writer when RD was going to say that Michael would never say suchandsuch a thing and ask for it to be changed. Jon said if the writer tried to argue with him (JC) about it, he'd say, "Look, you can change it now, or you can be getting a call from Roy at 3:00 in the morning. It's your choice."
    Whatta guy... :D
    From what I saw of Jon Cassar, he seems to be a really special person. People who've been to LCA often say that, but I just thought they were being nice and maybe a little director-struck. But I have to say that he's really something. He's bright, intelligent, talented, has a great (but kind) sense of humor, can dance the time warp reeeeeeeally well... AND can auction a crumby little shredder from the National Enquirer off for hundreds of dollars. *g*
    Nigel Bennet wasn't able to be there for the auction because he was working this year, but JC ran it with a great balance of control and Marx Brothers- like humor. I had a ball.
    During a break, I was able to tell him how much I'd enjoyed his directing and how it's made me laugh and cry and sit on the edge of my seat with excitement... and on another break, he told some of us that, although he's not directing any of the first thirteen eps, he's going to be directing some of the episodes of "24" after that. Wooo HOOOO!!
    Can't WAIT.
    To be continued...
  • My Interview With Luisa Rino, Nuvo Magazine -- SCC, 22:58:46 10/29/01 Mon
    My Interview With Someone Who Interviewed Roy Dupuis
    By Sherry Chiasson, 10/04/01
    In an amazing twist of fate, I called Nuvo Magazine to order extra copies of the magazine that featured Roy Dupuis… and ended up giving my order to the author of the article herself.
    It isn’t that Luisa Rino answered the phone and identified herself as the lucky and talented person who had written an article like a direct line to Roy Dupuis’ soul. Quite the opposite. As I stumbled through my order, giving my credit card information and searching for words, so excited that I was actually able to get my hands on a copy of the magazine, I realized that the person taking my order seemed knowledgeable about the photo shoot and interview. So, in a flash of inspiration, I asked if she had been, well, involved in the interview process.
    And that was how I learned that she had not only been involved but had actually participated in the whole event, from concept to interview to photo shoot. And she does not mind if I share what I learned with the Internet community.
    It sounds like the article was complex to put together. First, the magazine developed the concept; then they had to line up the participants. At the core was getting Roy Dupuis to agree to an interview and photo shoot. The process apparently took six months and the story was finally published one year after the initial idea was put into motion. Ultimately the production involved a leading photographer from Montreal, a Canadian clothing designer, and several animal wranglers.
    According to Ms. Rino (the author of the article), she rode in the car to the photo site with RD, his agent, and the magazine’s stylist. It was during this time that she was able to have a conversation with RD. When they arrived at the location they were met by the photographer and the rest of the small team.
    Ms. Rino told me several times that Roy was “so natural” during the shoot. He agreed to the original concept proposed by the magazine and the photographer and was completely natural and at ease working with the animals.
    Naturally, I asked about make-up and hair: whether they were done on location or beforehand. According to Ms. Rino, Roy is wearing NO make-up in the photos. His hair was fixed up a tiny bit, “maybe ten minutes,” onsite, using a little water to bring out his natural curls. He brought some of his own clothing, in addition to some clothing that was brought to the shoot by the stylist. The sweater he wears in the close-up (the one partially covering his hand) was provided by kamkyl, a Montreal-based designer.
    The photographs of RD with the owl and the dogs were apparently easy and natural. Even though it was most likely RD’s first time handling a bird like that, Ms. Rino said that he made it look like he had done it all his life. With the dogs, he was equally at home. So all in all, the shoot was an easy, relaxing experience for everyone. She told me that the photos were meant to portray RD in a context that would mirror his personality: gentle, serene, grounded.
    Not only did Ms. Rino get to interview Roy Dupuis in the car (to and from the location: Sacacomie), but she told me that the team even had dinner with him. This man, known to be reticent, was apparently comfortable enough with the team to spend extra time talking. Ms. Rino commented that in conversation, RD is both “sincere and open.” Overall, she found him to be “very intelligent and also kind.”
    Luisa Rino’s article on Roy Dupuis suggests that she allowed things to unfold, gathering information in an easygoing way. Her written words and her conversation with me reinforce my own impressions of RD, an unusual actor and a most amazing individual. In a sense, I feel like I have been touched by his magic, because I interviewed someone who interviewed him.
  • Response from the Editor of 24 Images -- Joyce, 18:50:40 11/09/01 Fri
    After playing phone tag for several days, Claude Racine, editor of 24 Images, and I finally connected. We discussed the Roy Dupuis article written by Andre Roy, which appeared in their Autumn 2001 issue.
    Mr. Racine graciously listened as I pointed out various aspects of Mr. Roy's article with which I was uncomfortable: the apparently outdated source of information (no mention of The Last Chapter nor Seraphin), the obvious omission of such works as Les Filles de Calleb and Scoop, and the portrayal of the Royettes as mere "girls". He gave me permission to take
    notes about his responses.
    Following is a paraphrased version of Mr. Racine's remarks, which I, personally, found interesting.
    Only 48 out of 1,000 actors were chosen for inclusion in the Autumn 2001 issue of 24 Images. They "appoint" them as good actors by their inclusion. On the other hand, they received numerous complaints from those that were not included in their list.
    Mr. Racine said that Andre Roy used some "humour" in the text of the writing. However, he thought the article was favorable and that they think Roy Dupuis is a good actor.
    24 Images is a magazine dedicated to cinema techniques. As such, they don't have a high opinion of "teleseries" products. They have a very critical viewpoint of TV series compared to cinema.
    This is a quote: "We say it is very low to what he appeared in in cinematique. He lost his time. Some say he is no good. We don't think that. We think if he dedicated himself to "film" he would still have a great image." (Please note that Mr.
    Racine did not say this in a disrespectful way. He stated it as a matter of fact.)
    Mr. Racine talked about being overexposed in publicity. An actor sells their name for a well known film, but the image can be "touched" through other exposure, such as teleseries. He
    said that Roy would be great in more films and he should dedicate himself more to cinema.
    The article was written (submitted) in July. At that time, the primary actors of "Seraphin" were unknown, therefore, no reference was made to it. The omission of such previous teleseries as "Les Filles de Calleb" and "Scoop", as well as the current filming of "The Last Chapter", was due to their very nature. They are not cinema, which admittedly is the focus of 24 Images.
    Royettes can rest assured that a true, concise depiction of our group has been relayed to Mr. Racine: our admiration and discussion of Roy's talent and depth of his work (rather than just his eyes and chin), the international and cultural exchanges, the charitable endeavors and the vast friendships that have developed. It was made very clear that the Royettes are not mere girls.
    Cheers,
    Joyce
  • Virus Protection -- Shirleym, 18:31:20 11/09/01 Fri
    I just got this from a friend. I hope it really works. Thought I'd put it up here in case it could help anyone. :-)
    Shirleym
    *****************************************************
    Just learned this today from my "puter guru" ! Makes Sense to me, thought I'd share with all.
    VIRUS PROTECTION TACTIC
    To protect your E-Mail against infecting all of your e-mail addresses follow the directions below. As you know, when/if a worm gets into your computer it heads straight for your email address book and sends itself to all on the list, infecting all. This will NOT keep YOU from getting the virus, but will stop it from infecting others in your address book from receiving it,AND it WILL ALERT YOU to the fact it has arrived!
    Here is what you do:
    First: Open your Address Book and click on "new contact"
    Second: In the window where you type in your friends first name, type in !000 (that is an exclamation mark followed by 3 zeros (not O's) )
    In the window below it will prompt you to enter the new email address: type in: WormAlert@alert.com (If it tells you this is not a valid address,just say yes to add it, or OK.). Then complete everything by clicking add, enter ok.
    Now, here is what you have done and why it works: the name !000 will be placed at the top of your address book as entry #1. This is where the worm will start in an effort to send itself, BUT when it tries to send itself to !000, it will be undeliverable because of the phony email address you have
    entered(Worm Alert). If the first attempt fails,(which it will), the worm goes no further and your friends will not be infected.
    Here is the second great advantage of this method: if an email cannot be delivered, you will be notified of this in your Inbox almost immediately,hence, if you ever get an email addressed to WormAlert could not be delivered, you would know right away that you have the worm virus in your system, then you can take steps to rid yourself of it.
    It is so great to see that these two great creative people, have a new project. I thought the series premier of "24" was very intriging. These two people would probably make any series great. Look at what they did with the television series "La Femme Nikita." The made it into a huge hit, and into one of USA Networks highest rated original show. I recently wrote a story about what would happen if the Section One compound was abandoned for good, and what would happen to it over time and would anyone or anything end up taking over the compound. I also kind of wrote a script for it; in case I send it to a network to look. I thought about sending it to Joel Surnow or Robert Cochran and asking them to read over it. Then, I thought I could mention that if they liked it, did they have any connections in the business they could send it to, so they can look at it. Is that wrong to say in a letter to them that I send with my story? I am asking you the reader's of this board because I value your opinion.
  • CQS4 auction items, cont'd -- Susan W., 22:31:40 10/29/01 Mon
    Here are some of the costume items that were auctioned off at CQS4 last May. All prices are Canadian dollars (figure 2/3 of that for U.S.D.)
    Peta/Nikita
    Black, stretchy jacket $275.
    Blue wool skirt with fringe, size 8 $75.
    Black gown with blue/red decorative panel ~$250.
    Blue/gold sheer, shimmery dress from "Treason" $700.
    Black padded mission jacket from "Not Was" (she put it on Michael) $360.
    Black backless Prada vest $275.
    Black sleeveless shirt w/belly button exposure $150.
    Black jacket with silver stripe $225.
    Black mission pants $150. (A bargain!)
    Black boots with spike heels (sz. 10 1/2) $150.
    Black mission boots (sz. 9 men's) $250.
    Black mules w/ high heels--dressy (sz. 10) $80. (There were a large number of sexy Peta shoes and boots in size 10 around this price--for once I wished that my feet were just a little larger!)
    Alberta/Madeline
    Tweed suit, jacket size 6, skirt size 4 $300
    Roy/Michael
    Black gloves $450.
    Black Spyder mission pants $550.
    Black winter mission pants $600.
    Soft charcoal black Gaultier suit with golden silk "animal print" lining $1,300. (This was the best item at the auction, IMO. The lining was wild and sexy--it made you crave to see the outtakes where Michael took off his jacket. Hope thought that R.D. would have preferred to wear the jacket inside out, lol.)
    Well, that's it. There were many more items, of course, but those were the ones that caught my eye. I got a black wool operative sweater that Peta wore--the kind that has its own hood attached so that you can only see my eyes. That should create a sensation at the local mall! :o)
    Here's something I've found that I think you'll agree is a pretty slanderous piece of work. I suggest that all boards who feel compelled to do so produce a well argued response and send it off (preferably in French translation) to the magazine.
    24 Images
    Autumn 2001 (No. 107-108)
    Extract from : An ABC of the actors of Quebecois Cinema
    Entry for Roy Dupuis by André Roy
    Translated by Viv
    “The beautiful Roy” as people like to call him, is currently pursuing an amazing career on American television (in the series La Femme Nikita), and is a huge hit with the girls who have formed a fan club with the outdated name of ‘The Royettes’, dedicated less to his life and works than to his large chin and piercing eyes. Before this explosion of fame he had a chequered career in the cinema of Quebec (in French), and Canada (in English), beginning with small roles (How to make Love to a Negro, Jesus of Montreal). These gave him excellent exposure and allowed him to become a star of both TV and cinema without, however, managing to dispel the lasting impression that his talents as an actor are limited. Only in Cap Tourmente, where he was kept in check by an impassioned role, full of tension, does he avoid macho banality.* But what will become of him now that he is immersed up to his neck in the American machine, where his image may well lead him to becoming a screen idol, dependent only on his appearance?
    * Surely the most contentious two words of the piece? For those who wish to confirm my translation, the original phrase is ‘trivialité mâle’. - viv
  • News that is a little too late -- Trish, 08:34:44 11/01/01 Thu
    Stephen Chao is resigning from USA Network. There is a story about it which I will place in the reply. The telling sentence 'Chao had a mixed track record at USA Cable, dismantling such long-running USA Network original series as ``Pacific Blue'' and ``La Femme Nikita'' but failing to come up with successful replacements' By the way, they are going to try another inane game show at 11 PM in about 6 weeks. I will be watching Jon Stewart.
  • DVDs!!! L@@k What I Found on the Save LFN Board! YEEEE HAWWWWW!!! :D :D :D {{{Happy Dancing}}} -- Shirleym, 04:25:31 11/02/01 Fri
    First Team was notified today by Warners that DVDs of LFN were submitted in October as a part of their annual DVD budget presentation. The presentation was favorably received, and the DVD project was approved!
    Columbia House will implement and manage the project. Based upon Warners' experience, it is anticipated that the DVDs will be available by approximately September, 2002. The process is a lengthy one which will include remastering of the film footage and sound. Columbia House will make the final decisions on how to launch the project, so please remember that this is only an estimate of the
    availability date.
    "Extras" will be included on the DVDs--exactly which extras will be determined by what extras are available and whether the extras are "compelling." Columbia House has their own department whose job it is to determine the "extras" content.
    Whether the DVDs are offered individually or as a boxed set will also be a decision made by Columbia House, although Warners has a preference for boxed sets and has found them to be an incredible success story.
    First Team has again made it very clear to Warners that the fans want boxed sets; that we are very well-informed and specific about what we want included with the DVDs; and that without the extras DVD sales cannot be expected to exceed those of Columbia House's VHS tapes. If it can be arranged, Warners anticipates scheduling a meeting between executives at Columbia House and members of First Team so that the expectations of the fans can be conveyed to them in person.
    There are still questions to be answered as the project moves along, but for now, we are more than satisfied with a big "YES" to our DVD request. Warners will stay in touch with First Team and will advise us as more information becomes available.
    If you would like to express your thanks to Warners (and perhaps emphasize your interest in boxed sets), we would suggest that you use a postcard directed to:
    Warner Brothers Video Division
    Attention: Marketing Department
    4000 Warner Boulevard
    Burbank, CA 91522
    First Team has thanked Warners for their approval of this project, and Warners has thanked First Team for calling this opportunity to their attention. We in turn want to give our thanks to all of you – the wonderful, loyal, hard-working fans of this incredible TV series – who have taken your time to write Warners and express your interest in the DVD project.
    Sometimes we do have more than our dreams!
    With heartfelt appreciation,
    First Team
  • LFN Scenes -- Erin Goeller, 17:48:04 10/30/01 Tue
    First, I want to say thank you for posting the post about the RD photo shoot. I found it quite interesting. Also, I wanted to ask if anyone know of any scenes from any episodes in which they show any type of plaque, like a concrete block on the ground like you would find at a University. The reason I am asking this is because of a college project. Also, when watching LFN does anyone else sometimes end up think of Michael as RD instead of Michael. I am just curious.
  • Debrief from LCA4 (part one) -- Shirleym, 21:24:13 10/27/01 Sat
    I went up to LCA with Minuet (list mom for the Royettes) and L. SCC couldn't come this time which was sad for us all, but I made sure to give her a full report as soon as I got home. There's an interesting history between the four of us. Min is the one who made the very first talent show a reality at CQS2 and L is the one who badgered me against my better judgment to do that talent show. (Thank you L! :D LOLOL) SCC and I are the ones who do most of the filks together for the performances.
    L did all the driving to and from Canada and changed lanes surprisingly infrequently. >:P
    We left at 7:30 am. (AGHHHHHHHH!) on Friday. The drive up was lots of fun talking amongst ourselves, me getting to know Minuet, and watching the countryside change from Pennsylvania to New York to Toronto. 3/4 of the way up, L and Min decided to listen to a book on tape... an {aHEM} "historical" novel about Scotland. I fell asleep as soon as it came on because... did I mention I'm not a morning person? I woke up a half hour later to something that sounded decidedly NOT historical... but oddly (see Ripley and Zzoo) fascinating. *g*
    Something about a wet clef...
    ... makes the music soggy and hard to light, no?. :P
    Oooooookay... So anyway, after getting a *little* bit lost around the airport, we made it to the hotel, rested up a bit, and went down to see the blooper (wrap) reels from a whole bunch of TV shows, including LFN. They showed two I'd never seen before which were season one and season four. The most interesting thing I remember from the season one one, is the whole cast singing {{Sec-tion, we're the Sec-tion}} with everyone dressed in black and Roy standing in the front with his arms crossed singing loud and clear as a bell. The only words I can remember are {{When you're, with the Sec-tion, have a rat-a-tat a tat time, a rat-a-tat time, we'll have a gayyyyy olllllllllld tiiiiiiiiiiime}}
    Min and I will try to get those lyrics. They must be a scream.
    The next blooper that really stands out for me was from the season 2 reel. I've always laughed because I have a thing about the way Roy says the word "aerrrrrea" in LFN. He pronounces that "r" so long and hard and....................................what was I talking about again?.... :P~~~~~~~~`
    ...oh yeah, and a little nasal... The first time I remember hearing him say it (and wondering why he sounded like Donald Duck all of a sudden) was in Hard Landing when he's looking through the night binoculars. This man who can make me melt with almost any word in any language he cares to tackle, had me in stitches.
    Well, I'd seen the season 2 wrap reel before, but I guess I didn't catch the blooper from Approaching Zero where Michael comes to Nikita's door and Jurgen's in there visiting her and Michael says, "I was just in the adea"... (with a pronounced d sound) and then he starts laughing at what just came out of his mouth. :D
    Somebody buy that man a vicinity!
    LOL, It's nice to know he's human. ;-)
    I can't remember which season it's from, but I love the blooper where Michael's walking down the hall in his black suit, walking that incredible, self assured, graceful yet incredibly hunky walk... and then he just keeps going till he slams right into the wall.... BLAM!!!
    There were two great ones from season four. One was of Roy and Peta in the beach scene in Up the Rabbit Hole. They've both got what looks like fruit roll ups for tongues so it looks like their tongues are about two and a half inches wide and five or six inches long and they're side by side looking into the camera and wagging their tongues around...
    and then they kind of sidle their faces up to each other till they're sort of cheek to cheek and try to turn and touch the flapping tongues. That's one I'd love to see again.
    And the last sort of "good bye" from Roy.
    He's sitting in front of a computer as Michael, dressed in black as usual. He's typing very seriously as he always does, looking at the screen with his usual calm intensity. All of a sudden he's got an apple in his hand and he opens his mouth reeeeeeeally wide and takes a huge bite out it. I mean HUGE. {{{CA-RUNCH}}} And then he proceeds to crunch and chomp on it and shift it in his mouth from cheek to cheek in the messiest display of apple eating I've EVER seen. LOL!
    He's got the skin of it still flopping around on his tongue, half out of his mouth, juice is glistening on his chin, and all the while he just keeps studying that screen verrrrrrrrrrrry intently. Then as he continues chewing, he starts frowning and squinting and moving his head closer to the screen in a kind of a what-the-hell-is-that look. Then he sits back a bit, then he leans forward and squints and frowns a bit again... then he sits back again....... and then, with a mixture of pride, accomplishment and finality on his face, he says something like,
    "Ok.................. everybody's dead".
    And that's the end of the season four reel.
    Whatta guy
    end of part one
  • CQS4 Auction item figures -- Susan W, 23:06:31 10/21/01 Sun
    Since Joyce has posted the final totals for the CQS4 auction, I thought that I'd go ahead and mention a few choice items that came up for bid in Toronto. All prices are in Canadian dollars, unless otherwise stated--figure about 2/3 of the given price for a U.S. dollar conversion. Auctioneers at CQS4 included Don, Carlo, Lawrence, Doug MacRae, Stephen Shellen, and others.
    Shirt and tie that Ops died in (with fake blood, and no, I'm not kidding!) $400
    Doug MacRae's shorts, complete with a rip in the bottom $700 (~$540 U.S.) Doug tried these on...[Bidder]: "I get to take them off in front of everybody?!" [Doug]: "Whatever!" [Don]: "This is not the time to be shy!" :-)
    Lawrence Bayne Bowling Shirt, autographed on the spot $200
    "Hand Dance" t-shirt, autographed by Roy $300
    A "Roy" clock $200 [Don]: It has Roy's picture on every hour...it tells you when to go and when to come!" ;-)
    Elle Quebec Feb. '96, with the fabulous (signed) "Roy in bed" photo, $200
    Carlo's hat from "All The World's A Stage" $600 (Carlo gave Don a big hug just before he left the auction.)
    #508 "A Time For Every Purpose" yellow script, with two revisions $3,300 (~$2,450 U.S.) Absolutely wild bidding on this item
    Large season 2 promo poster (Nikita with Michael in profile) $300
    Large "male models" MIRA poster, laminated (don't want that to wear out, now do we?) $300
    "Michael on a motorcycle" doll, signed by Roy (very cute--the doll, I mean...well, okay, Roy too...) $1,000
    "Rescue" script, signed by Roy $500
    Michael and Nikita large poster, mounted $5,000 (~3,700 U.S.) This was actually listed as "Michael and Nikita mounted large poster", which perhaps accounts for the price, lol.
    More tomorrow, gang.
    I noticed a movie titled The Descendent on TV the other night and the description read just like Hemaglobin and had Rutger Hauer in it. Looks like Hemaglobin/Bleeders just added yet another title change in its search for respectability. I don't think a title change is going to be enough, LOL.
