I went up to the Mira event at the last minute. I hadn't planned to go (not enough money and drowning in RL responsibilities), but was asked to be an auctioneer for the Sunday auction (gulp... did I mention I'd never done that before?) so I dynamited a hole in my life and hustled my buns up to Quebec, dragging SCC with me because I wasn't ABOUT to get up on that stage by myself.

What can I say. Montreal, which I saw for the very first time, is the most amazing city. By the time I was eleven, I'd traveled to Hong Kong, Singapore, Saigon (before the war), Egypt, Djakarta, Manila, France, England, Italy, Ugoslavia, Japan- you name it, most likely I've been there;
But I can't get over what a lovely city Montreal is. I honestly didn't think I'd like it so much. Rue St.-Denis is one of my favorite places in the whole world. A real playground with great shops and great food, most of it at very reasonable prices. The other smaller, quiet streets in that area are also wonderful. I'll have to go back and see how it is in the winter months when the snow is as high as Roy Dupuis' thigh. ;)

The event was fun, interesting, and educational. The Mira race was just a blast. It's held on the opening day of the Granby Autodrome after the regular races and the cars start out at a crawl, but as they get going, it really gets exciting, and the crowd is cheering and gasping as cars bump into each other, into the walls, and then somehow often get out of and around those situations with speeds of up to (I think) about 30 miles per hour. Roy and his driver came in fourth. I didn't go down to the racing area to see Roy, but I really, really enjoyed myself.

We got a tour of Fondation Mira and got to see the puppies, and go on a blindfolded obstacle course with a guide dog leading us, and generally see how things are done there... and aside from thinking the founder of Mira was a homless man they let hang around there, I did just fine! (oy)
(SCC and I missed the beginning of the tour where they must have introduced Eric St. Pierre to everyone.)

The "darkness dinner" was an interesting experience and I didn't embarrass myself by spilling my wine all over my spaghetti or buttering my nose instead of my bread. Pretty good, eh? :D

SCC and I managed to get through the five hour auction, breaking up the monotony of GORGEOUS, to die for, signed-by-RD stuff, with a hastily thrown-together song or two and everyone raised around $60,000 (C)for the cause. At the end, when they asked all the event volunteers to come up on stage and it felt like half of the audience came up, I was almost in tears realizing how much effort had gone into the whole thing. QUEL JOB, Joyce and everyone!

Also, thank you to Minuet for the tour of NTSC, which was really interesting. And I actually got to talk to Skippy for about five minutes this time! LOL that's an all-time record for us. :-)

So, for an unexpected trip, it was pretty darned nice! Mira really showed themselves to be deeply commited to their cause and gave everyone a huge helping of Quebec hospitality. I hope they do it again next year, but they'll really have to come up with something good to top what they did this time.

Thanks for 'taking us there' - wish I could have been there for your performance!
