It's been a good year for spy shows, with Kiefer Sutherland taking the award for best actor in a T.V. series, drama for his work in "24", and Jennifer Garner doing likewise as the lead actress for "Alias".

Kiefer, looking tan and fit, accepted his award saying, "I'd like to thank Joel [Surnow] and Bob [Cochran] for what they've done with the show." He also expressed his gratitude to Fox for being "very supportive" (a sentiment echoed by Nicole Kidman, accepting best actress in a comedy or musical for "Moulin Rouge").

Jennifer Garner, looking lovely in a simple, sleeveless, floor-length red sheath, seemed surprised at her win. She began her charming acceptance speech in a humorous vein, stating that, "I'm really glad I had the first cup of wine...but I'm regretting the second!" She continued, speaking jokingly to TPTB that hired her, "I don't know why you cast me in this role, I don't know why you thought I could do it... (thinking)...I *know* I was good in "Dude, Where's My Car"...but seriously...". She continued on, mentioning that she had met her husband through working on the show, and also thanking her mom and dad back in West Virginia. She seems like a very grounded young woman. Okay, how many of you were picturing Peta up there, in some sort of alternate universe? :-)

Unfortunately, both "24" and "Alias" lost out on best T.V. series, drama to "Six Feet Under". It was a highly competitive field, with "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation", and "The West Wing" also in the running. I thought that you could make a case for any of those shows, but I really, really thought that "24" would get it due to the excellent reviews it has been receiving. :-/ Either the critics wanted to spread the wealth, or perhaps they wanted to reward a show that takes significant risks and is decidedly quirky.

One of my favorite actors, Ralph Fiennes, made an appearance as a presenter, looking very fine in his excellent fitting evening clothes, and manfully trying his best to flash that beautiful smile (under direct orders from his agent, who knows what he's about ;-) .

[> Thank you for that report. I didn't watch the awards, but I did watch Alias last night (which I do EVERY Sunday night). Last night's ep was the best one of the season! I know this is a moot question, by why, OH WHY, couldn't LFN had that kind of continuity??? And I must add that PJhub and I faithfully watch 24--it's great! He won't watch Alias, though. I think he got a bad first impression from the premiere. -- PJ, 08:24:06 01/21/02 Mon

[> [> I've got last night's "Alias" on tape, so I'm looking forward to seeing it. I agree, PJ, "Alias" does have great continuity, and it's improved a lot since its early episodes. I like "24"--and it has some amazing, well thought out twists--but I was only able to watch the first few shows in a sketchy way, so my appreciation of the story has suffered accordingly. -- Susan W, 10:40:47 01/21/02 Mon

[> It was great to see Kiefer get the award for that show. I've been watching, but switching channels when it gets too thick in the let's-torture-the-young-girl-with-the-plunging-vest department. Joel just can't seem to stay away from that, can he. (r) -- Shirleym, 22:02:53 01/24/02 Thu

But it's the only show I make a point of watching because most of the time it keeps me glued to the set.

I was reading a magazine at the densits office last month and they let me tear out the page about KS. It said he was born in London and moved to Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, Canada with his mother when he was young. There's that country again. ;)

[> [> Shirley, I agree--for me, watching the young girls get kidnapped was painful to the point where I really didn't want to watch it. I wonder how many other women feel the same way. -- sw, 10:52:34 01/28/02 Mon
