*Happy Birthday Roy Dupuis!!* :D
(Am I STILL 10 years older than he is??? Why hasn't he caught up with me yet. Could somebody please tell him to "hurry"... :P)

Here are some thoughts on TLC, but there are spoilers so I'll put it in the reply.

This is a very strange production, but I really enjoyed Roy's acting in the last 4 episodes. The character development that the director is supposed to do is non existant IMO, the storyline is a jumble, and I felt absolutley nothing for most of the characters, but there are some choice moment that make it worth watching. I don't think the director could have kept us further away from the characters in the first two episodes and the dialog is incredibly hard to hear, but there are some scenes that are done beautifully.

Roy, as usual, does an excellent job of character development, but for WHAT??!! Are we supposed to believe that his character is really as clean as he seems? I don't THINK so. So, much as I really felt for him losing his wonderful Wendy (and Celine did a *terrific* job in her way too small part) I don't think a character like that could really exist.

Now, I know a character like Michael in LFN couldn't really exist either, but I looked at that show more as a metaphor for life in general - except in the extreme. It was real and unreal and surreal all at the same time and it was theatrical and larger than life and like a comic book too, at times. But this production of TLC is supposed to be portraying real people and I don't see the character Roy played as ever having been doing what that gang of bikers was doing. If he was somehow supposed to have stayed out of it, that should have been revealed in the story line.

I thought the man who played the inspector was wonderful, but why did he care so much for these a**holes??? (pardon my French) That's never made clear and seems totally unrealistic to me. The woman who played Emilie was also very good in her part. And Dan Bigras who (thanks viv! ;)) wrote the music to J'en Suis and plays Roots in TLC was absolutely wonderful. Now HE was totally believable to me.

The interesting thing about the production is that you can watch it in both languages (Quebecois and English) because it wasn't dubbed, they took each scene in both French and English so it's two different takes in two different productions. I'm sure this must be one of the things that attracted Roy to the project. Unfortunately, IMO, there are only a few scenes worth comparing...
but some of those are doozies. >:)

My favorite scenes -
Anything with Dan Bigras in it.
The coke, chocolate and sky sailing scene (I liked the French one better)
The where-IS-my-hand-*anyway* scene (liked the English one better)
The scene in the car with Bob's daughter (liked the French one better)
and the I-think-it's-a-bomb scene (what a hoot and a half, but haven't scene the French version yet.)

So those are my impressions. I'd love to hear anyone else's.

*WENDY FOREVER*!! :D

Saddest thing about watching TLC :
Opening of 5th part (3rd English episode) - 1st street scene. A light comes on in a deep recess of the brain... it's the Canary Restaurant corner ... haunt of the rapist in Voices, and Karl's (Alan Van Sprang's) doss in Under The Influence ... just a block away from the Cherry Street Restaurant, unforgettable location in Hard Landing.

Let go ... Let go ... Gotta ... let ... go ....

[> [> [> Ahhhh, Viv! Only you would know these things. Had to look up the word "doss"... and then HAD to go back and check UTI. LOL... Quel job >:P LFN will never let you go... me neither... (sigh) -- Shirleym, 23:42:56 04/23/02 Tue

I screwed up! The Canary Restaurant (on Cherry Street) was just 'Voices'. Hard Landing and UTI both used The Cherry Street Restaurant. I always get them mixed up.
I appreciate that this is pretty mind-numbing stuff (you weere warned), but I couldn't leave such a glaring error out there :-)

[> [> [> [> Ahahaha! Yes, that could have had something to do with it... that, and the fact that I don't have Voices on tape. (Ohhhhh CRUMBbuns)... hehehe... look *THAT* one up. >:> I cracked up when I saw him giving Madeline the same look he gave us when he paraded around with the coke can. Leave it to you Viv to recognize those places! I so wish that I had gone on Lori's bus tour at the con!

I haven't seen it, and have only read the synopsis on the CBC page and tried to read the synopsis on Radio-Canada, but is anyone actually left standing to be in a sequel.

Wendy (CB) definitely won't be back for part deux, excpet maybe some of her pieces of clothing... *g* (oh, I just love to tease) but RD's character looks like it will be, from what I've heard. Other than that, not too many people were killed off that were main characters. If you'd like a copy of the series, I can make you a copy of my copy in English and just charge for tapes and postage. I'm in the middle of another big copying project, so it would take a few days. My e-mail addy is:

Well, I think Wendy could come back as Sparks, even though she exited more like Jergen.

The sequel will be called "Six Easy Pieces." Wendy will be reconstructed as a waitress working at the Cherry Street Restaurant, which will appear to be in France. Ross will come in and order those Canadian fries with the gravy (the name escapes me), but without the fries and forget the gravy, so that all that's left is the salt. Wendy will refuse by saying "Am I under orders to serve you?"

:-)

Or wait. Another scenario. Ross is shot and thought dead, but he is taken to Section's hospital, where he is miraculously put back together by Operations' surgeon from New Regime. Gabriella comes to the cafeteria, looking for Tinker. Roots shows up instead, holding the statue from J'en Suis and wearing his Triple Sixers biker jacket. Emilie, who has just had her 15th child, gets pissed off about something and leaves, but not before smacking Bob around (and Ross, for good measure). Dominique's mother, who is producing an in-depth TV documentary on Montreal's hospitals, calls Stephanie to suggest sending a Scoop reporter over. Emilie's father resumes tango lessons with Leona. And the woman who plays Margot shoots her next Danone commercial.

I don't know why, but I feel a little confus-ed.

Viv, you have a mind like no other. I now dub you The Archivist.

Shirley, your analysis is much deeper than my own. I now dub you The Analyst.

[> [> [> Gawd, SCC, you're TOO funny! What wonderful memories you stir up, but it's almost like a dream, with bits and pieces of everything, swirling, meshing, and making no sense! (Well, MY dreams, anyway.) I recognize all the references except the commercial for Danone. Must be a Canadian thing, eh? -- Gretchen, 08:27:07 05/08/02 Wed

[> [> [> [> HI Gretchen! (If this isn't too long after your post....) The Dannone thing is about the woman who played Margot in Scoop. She appears in a Dannone (Dannon) commercial that is shown repeatedly during TLC. She goes into a shop and asks the saleswoman how a dress looks on her and I don't recall the details,. but basically, the saleswoman suggests that one is more slimming. The actress who played Margot was also shown online in some clips at that awards site that someone posted about awhile back, where apparently you could see RD in the background. -- SCC, 19:39:52 05/19/02 Sun
