Subject: Does anybody know how to.....

Happy Holidays!!

Checking email and the board this Christmas Eve. Have two questsions.

1. Has anyone heard anything about Chris Heyn's book? I haven't gotten into his board lately. Tried awhile back and it was late at night and taking too long.

2. This is the question I really need an answer to. I don't know what happened when I got into a couple of websites or else a company that has my email address gave it to others, but I got into Legos.com and wb.com. I think that was it. Anyway, since 12/17 I have been getting all sorts of emails from sites to sell me something, let me win something and all sorts of notices that I don't need on my computer. I'm getting emails from people I have no clue who they are. I don't open just delete. Right now I have 63 messages in my inbasket. About 15 are legitimate messages from people I know. My question is...how I can I get this crap stopped without having to change my email address? Anybody know? Will deleting all my cookies (if I don't know what they belong to) help? I don't want to open any to see if they have a 'if you don't want to get this again' message. Do they not send it if you send those negative replies back?

Guess I'll go and finish getting ready for tomorrow. Getting ready to make Buttermilk coffee cake for breakfast is what I have to do. Can you smell the cinnamon? I'd send you all a piece if I could.

Have a great holiday season!! And thanks to anybody that answers. I will be eternally grateful.
SandyB

[> Hello, SandyB! Chris's book has been delayed until after the holidays. I think that he came to realize that the book that he wanted to write was in conflict with his self-imposed timetable, so he decided in favor of the former. As for the unwanted e-mails...(r) -- Susan W, 23:46:33 12/25/01 Tue

I wish I knew what to tell you. My in box has been turned into a toxic waste dump as well...and this is coming from someone who (at least in the past) has been a diligent spam hunter. I used to trace the offending e-mails back to the originating ISP's (which is usually not the "sender", BTW), complain to same, notify admins with open relays, etc. And for a long time, my strategies worked--I would get maybe one or two pieces of spam a year, tops. That changed when I inadvertantly made a slip with ezboard and neglected to uncheck the boxes that keep the spam away. Still, after a long battle, I thought I had the problem under control. Now, there's a new onslaught--and I think it's from a different source, but so far, I've no clue. I am wondering if someone is picking it up when we create links on MB's to our e-mails. Or perhaps it has something to do with cookies? I'm beginning to think that the technology to spam has leapt beyond my feeble understanding.

The good news is that "legitimate" e-mailers WILL remove you from their lists if you request that they do so (this is due to many people like me who hounded them so relentlessly that they decided to go "legit" as opposed to constantly having to find a new ISP). Some come in different guises and still need to be tracked to the home source. Some still do not offer a legitimate opt-out offer and must be tracked using the tried and true methods--let me know if this interests you and I will direct you to the needed resources.

Sorry for the long winded reply, but this problem has been frustrating to me as well.

[> [> I think I must have boo-booed lately, too. My spam count jumped radically about a week ago. I'm just guessing but it may have been from on-line Christmas shopping. Cookies, cookies, everywhere, and not a decent calorie among them. (BTW, if you have AOL you will NEVER get rid of the problem. AOL is selling your addy to the spammers.) -- Zzoo, 11:54:05 12/26/01 Wed

[> Susan, thanks for the help. Yes I'm interested in any resources you can give me. I did see an article in our paper about spam and it mentioned a site (Brightmail I think) that you can email to stop it. A friend also mentioned sites but she didn't know what they were. Guess I'll try opening some to see about stopping them that way. Or wipe out the cookies. Zzoo, I'm not on AOL. Just happened after I got into WB.com and Legos.com 117 of them since 12/17. Susan, email me please with something I'd recognize in the subject. Thanks. -- SandyB, 10:21:19 12/29/01 Sat
