Subject: A strange, sad day

I was teaching my class of third graders in Baltimore City when I heard the initial news circulate via the grapevine--that there had been an "explosion" at the WTC--and I thought that it would be something like the previous terrorist attack there. When I took my kids downstairs to lunch, there were parents lined up at the door, waiting for their children--an unusual sight, but I still didn't "get it". At lunch, I saw the horrific pictures on the T.V., trying along with everyone else to absorb what had happened. After, I was waiting with the few children that were left--we were trying to shelter them, but they had heard enough about it to be worried--I had to assure them that they were safe at school, that the "bad guys" did not appear to be targeting school children. The most haunting question that I was asked: "Is it over?" I said to my principal, "This is our Pearl Harbor" and she replied "This is worse." I drove home a short time later--traffic was being diverted from downtown Baltimore, the police were out in force, and I saw some soldiers out on the street. Driving by Baltimore-Washington Int'l airport was eerie--I drive right alongside the flight path, and normally I delight in watching the planes land and depart. There was nothing today but empty skies. The area around our Maryland state house in Annapolis was evacuated and the Naval Academy was locked down--no one in or out. My brother and his wife serve as a "host family" for two of the midshshipmen, and my sister-in-law wanted them at the house if at all possible, but no luck. My brother is up in Boston on business, and will try to leave tomorrow. He told me a few weeks ago that he either has (or is competing for, I can't remember) the contract to renovate the Pentagon, and I thought--now he really has his work cut out for him.

I've been to the WTC--I remember an ear-popping, very fast elevator ride and stunning views. From street level, I used to fully tilt my head up to the sky to see the tops of the twin towers. Lower Manhattan will look very strange to my eyes from now on.

Hugs to you all. This was a tough day.
