• He had taken to driving by their house occasionally - but he could never go too slow because the noisy rumble of his car would undoubtedly attract attention. It was by mere happenstance that he was strolling down the walk just as Lysia had slipped in the diner, and he spotted her friend. He had been heavy into the scotch already - as had become habit - but he wasn't drunk. Just relaxed. He raised a hand and stepped a little quicker to catch the young guy. "Joey!" • He looked over his shoulder, not recognizing him at first but then realizing who it was. He cast one last worried look into the diners window after Lysia, he could hear her coughing from here - they would probably send her home again. "Hey..." • "Hey..." He breathed the greeting softly and shoved his hands into the pockets of his jacket as he slowed to just stand a short distance from the other guy. "How's it going?" It occurred to him then that he wasn't sure what to say to Joey, or even if he should be talking to him. The truth was, he just hadn't been able to resist saying hi when he saw him. Try as he might, he couldn't totally forget his little Lysia, with her bold but coy and sometimes sweets ways. Every day that passed, he just continued to think of her from time to time. • He shrugged a little, looking back into the diner and wincing at the sound of the harsh coughing. She definately had pneumonia, there was no getting around it. He just didn't know what he would do if she got really sick. The young man looked a little defeated though he tried to keep his chin up. "Things have been better." • He exhaled a soft sigh just at the man's demeanor, and then nodded a touch, popping up the collar on his heavy charcoal wool coat before shoving his hands back into the pockets. "If there's anything I can do..." He offered just casually, because he doubt the guy would accept any help, but he felt he had to at least suggest it. He really wasn't usually the type to concern himself with other peoples' affairs, but it was the still proud look in the young guy's eyes, and the way he stood up straight, with his shoulders back, despite his jacket that wasn't quite up-to-par for autumn in this town and his obvious lack of R&R. "Is that her?" He questioned almost reluctantly - he could hear the coughing, and the few glimpses that he had caught of her over the past few months had suggested that she wasn't doing too well. • He ran his hands through his hair for a second before he nodded slowly. "Yeah...she's been getting worse every day, coughing keeps her up at night so she's not getting any rest to make her better..." He frowned softly, pursing his lips, it was good to just vent about it. "I don't know what to do with her. She's not eating right..." Money had been so damn tight that portions had been small and she had been skipping meals and eating less so that Jackie and Astrid could get more - he didn't know where Lysia developed this sudden sense of rightousness at but it was getting in the way of her previous 'only the strong survive' mentality. • He breathed a low breath at that and shook his head slowly before running one hand through his hair in thought. He was silent for a long moment before tipping his head back a little, brows furrowing gently. "She won't go and see a doctor?" This didn't sound good, but he needed to stay out of her life - he knew that. It was so hard though... Those kids were obviously struggling, and he was living in luxury. • He smirked a little bit at that, tipping his head to the side. "You know how much a visit to the docs costs when you don't have insurance? Hell they charge you a hundred dollars just to sign in practically." He shrugged his shoulders, looking back into the window to eye the girl for a second before he looked back to Travis. "I can't even afford to feed them right, much less take them to the doctors when they need it." He had gotten in way over his head when he took this project on and it was overwhelming at times. • He nodded slowly, impressed that the guy wasn't too proud to admit that they were struggling, and then he reached for his wallet out of his back pocket. "Look, I know a guy... He's got a clinic downtown - nice, clean place. He's a good guy, and he owes me a favor." He flipped through a few business cards before coming up with the one he was looking for, and offered that out to Joey. "If you call him and tell him that I sent you, he'll take care of her. • He turned the card in his fingers, looking down at it for a moment before he looked back up to Travis. "Don't tell her what? That you care?" He smirked, tipping his head to the side as he regarded the other man. "When she turns a couple years older, will she be good enough for you then?" He slipped the card into his pocket none the less, if things kept getting worse with Lysia he would have no choice but as of right now he couldn't take her anymore because it would raise to many questions about who she was, where she lived, where her parents were and why she wasn't on their insurance. • He shook his head slowly, glancing around a little before stepping a little closer to Joey for the conversation. "She's too good for me now, but I'm not allowed to care, understand? And when she's a couple years older, she's going to be interested in going out, having fun, being young, but I'm also going to be a couple years older and probably shopping for a house in the 'burbs and getting a dog, and a sedan or something." He reminded the kid - it wasn't just the legality issue, they were in such different points in their lives. "But about her getting checked out - this guy won't ask questions. • He shook his head, his brow furrowing. "You live in a small world, don't you? Everythings black and white." He gestured towards the building Lysia was in. "That girl is years older then you will ever be." The tone of his voice turned more passionate as he spoke. "She's seen things you think only happen on Law and Order, she's lived through hell in those sixteen years of her life and she will never, ever, have the chance to be young again." His brow cocked, tipping his head. "I would bet anything that the only time she ever felt like a normal girl was when she was with you and you took that away from her." His eyes dropped down to the card in his hand, looking at it for a second. "But, like you said, not your worry right? • He nearly growled in frustration, because he was having enough trouble convincing himself of the way that things should be, the last thing he wanted to hear was more support for Lysia. Shaking his head slowly, he just stood up a little straighter and shifted from one foot to the other. "Yeah. Like I said. Not my worry because I'm not going to jail." • "You too." He muttered in returned and stepped back a little before starting to turn, though he hesitated a moment longer to glance back at Joey once more. "Good luck." Despite their conflicting opinions on things, there was a genuine tone to his voice and he nodded his head a fraction before finishing his turn and continuing his saunter down the walk in the direction of 'his' bar.
