Subject: Musicione

Seems to me that many BC fans are playing in some kind of band or have been in a band. I myself was a bass player, which in Finland is as bad as being a drummer in other countries (so many bad jokes about bass-players). Well I'm not playing anymore, sold my gear three years ago, but before that I was in a couple of bands. In my first band we tried GW's When Friends Fall Out, mercifully there is no tape in existence of that horrible version. Later on I played in a band called Massey Ferguson (it was sort of Neil Young tribute thing, cause Buffalo Springfield is also sort of tractor-like machine). But I think there are many others with sad and humiliating experinces in music biz, so share your experinces.

Well, I've always been a frustrated singer- frustrated 'cause I can't sing! I don't know where my son got his voice from! (must be all that good Burton music rubbed off. But if that's the case why can't I sing?)

Awwww, c'mon AW. Singing these days has very little to do with God-given talent especially in the rock category. You don't have to be a Pavoratti now days. If you can carry a basic tune without a wheelbarrow, tonal quality is not necessarily as important as edge and uniqueness. Want proof?Check out Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Joe Cocker none of which have a voice that would qualify for a middle school chorus. Three days in the studio with my equipment and your playback would put you in shock!!! As for your son, if he's got that natural talent you had beter encourage him or I may just have to hunt you down. A son? A good voice? Influenced by GW/BC? He may be the second coming of great Rock and roll. P.S. Hit a wrong key so hope this isn't a double post. LL.

My son is 13, discovered the Beatles when he was 10.(1st love) He recently "discovered" Sonny and Cher. but since he grew up listening to the radio station I listen to, he knows who Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, Elvis, James Gang all those artists We grew up with. And of coarse he knows who Burton/Guess Who are. (he knows the words too!)

Many many years ago I had a band called "Violation". We weren't very good, and when we couldn't do a popular song, we did a medley instead. As no one in the band could sing, and I was the least worst singer, I was assigned the task. Never could do a GW thing (though, God knows, we tried) but we did do a half decent BTO medley (let's face it, takin' care of business can be sung by anyone (maybe that's why it's so good???) but couldn't come close to doing a GW thing. That requires REAL talent.

I've been singing publicly since I was 8 (I'll be 40 this year), and though I've had minor embarrassments -- like reaching down to pick up my fellow musician's pick and splitting my pants, like being on stage at the Pennsylvania Junior Miss contest and having laryngitis to the point my voice just takes off to parts unknown during the middle of my song, etc. -- I really think, though, that my most embarrassing moment is still out there waiting for me...

My favorite moment was during a tryout for the TNN production of "You Can Be A Star", the country version of Star Search. After my audition, the producer let me and my friends go up on the stage of The Grand Old Opry. That's a moment I'll never forget.

Q: What does the bass player say when he steps up to the microphone? A: Would you like fries with that? Q: What does a drummer use for birth control? A: His personality. nyuk nyuk, just kidding.

I was in a band a few years ago, we had the same type of history as Spinal Tap. We were big for a short period of time, and our history goes way back. Our philosiphy was similar to the Tap's, just play and play hard and put on a good show. You may have heard of them, The Cheesesticks, there are very few recordings of them, so if you find one hold onto it. We had a spin off band, Mental Albatroos, but they only had one or two hits.

I've got lots of road stories, but here are a select few:

I was playing bass in a band many years ago and the lead singer/guitarist insisted we do Achey Breaky Heart because it was so popular. We weren't even a country band! I hated it, and was humiliated each time we played it. Well, one night, this same lead singer forgot the words to that song, right in the middle of singing it, and after that night we never sang it again. Thank goodness for that!

Also, in that same band, we used to do a song called Walk, Don't Run. It was an old instrumental, probably by the Venturers or something like that. Anyway, there's a short drum break in the middle of the song, just 8 bars. However, one night we all just walked off the stage and left the drummer there on his own for several minutes! He really earned is pay that night.

And our keyboard player was a bit of a mad man. One night we were doing Satisfaction, and it was his turn to come up front and sing lead vocals, since there's no keyboards in that song. Well, he was jumping around on the stage, really getting into it, and knocked his keyboards over. Lucky for him, they still worked, but ne never bounced around quite as much after that.

As for me, I've been lucky enough so far that the worst thing that's happened to me is a broken string. Except one night we had no roadie and my string broke during just the second song of the night. In that band, I switched between guitar and keyboards, depending on what the song needed, so rather than take a break two songs into the first set, I asked if there was anyone in the audience who knew how to string and tune a guitar. Some guy volunteered and we just jumped to a couple of keyboard songs while he put on the new string. A couple of songs later he gave me the guitar and we jumped right into Proud Mary. Silly me, I hadn't checked the guitar and he had totally wound all the strings tight and it was completely out of tune from top to bottom. I shouted HOLD IT! and ended up tuning right there on stage. Well, I had rushed the tuning and the song sounded aweful, so we ended up taking an early break then anyway. I happened to tape the band that night so somewhere in my garage is a recording of the most out of tune rendition of Proud Mary ever committed to tape.

This is hilarious!! I remember being in a band and doing these eyes. It was God awfull and we cleared the church basement. Esp during this part of the song ...these eyes have seen alot of love..GIANT BREATH...and there never gonna see another woman..GIANT BREATH...like I had with you..

Also did Fine State of Affairs however I didn't sing it. Am thinking of doing an acoustic version of Take It Off My Shoulders in my most recent band. That could be fun.

This is more humorous than sad. When I was playing in a band out of Billings, MT, our repitoire was Foghat, Bad Co., BTO, Grand Funk, Deep Purple. Sometimes our agency would book us at gigs where the locals wanted to hear country (Lying Eyes & Rhinestone Cowboy was all we had in this genre) or mellow (how long can we keep playing Whiter Shade of Pale). One time we played a wedding reception for some Hungarians (or somesuch). After our first set of rock 'n' roll, they said we were very good, but could some of their guys borrow our instruments and do some songs? So for the rest of the evening, we had a very good time drinking & partying with these very nice people to the Hungarian music. We never played another note.

this mother has a video of her son and his friends (10 years old)in my attic playing Beatles songs "pretending" to be a band.(gawd it's hysterical) I'll take great delight in embarrassing him with it someday. (I hid it so he can't throw it out)

When I'm in a real wicked mood I tell him I'm going to show all his nekid baby pictures to his(future) girlfriends and watch the look of horror on his face.heeheehee.
