Subject: Gamers news or something like it...

Because I've gone way too long without spilling all I know, here you go:

I'm not feeling too good here guys concerning Nintendo's launch of the Gamecube.

First we get the news that the system will be shipping approximately two weeks later than expected here in the U.S. (eta: Sunday, November 18). Now the rumour mill is saying that it'll launch with not eighteen, but TWO titles. Count them: Wave Racer and Luigi's Mansion. One. Two. Granted, the Big N is countering with a statement saying that there will be at least 6 other titles from third party people out and that Super Smash Bros. Melee will be showing up a scant two weeks after launch... but still, it's not giving me the nice warm and cheery feeling inside that I was expecting. Actually, it makes me remember the ill-fated launch of the N64: One system and two games (Mario 64 and Pilot Wings 64), with several games coming several months later.

Oh and I'm still ticked that there's no announced green Cube. You can have Blue, Black and Orange... excuse me: SPICE (it's orange, damnit!) at launch, or you can wait till next year and get it in Silver, Gold or some Pink/Fusia color (which btw, is the worst selling colour for the Gameboy Advance), but no Green. Bah. To say I'm a bit miffed is an understatement...

To top everything else off, retailers in the U.S. are starting to require that people buy all their next gen systems in bundles. Why? Well thanks to the Playstation 2's slow software sales (blame the lack of consoles for this if you like), retailers have decided to hedge their bets and force the consumer to pick up useless other crap to ensure a profit. I was discussing this with one of my friends the other day. Apparently Electronics Boutique plans to force their pre-ordering customers to fork over $499 for an Xbox bundle that includes the system, 3 games chosen from a specific list of titles and either an extra controller, a memory card or the add-on dvd remote. Let's see... the system will retail at about $300, the games are about $50 a pop and that totals out to $450. Am I really to believe that one of their bloody accessories is worth an additional $50? Controllers go for between $20-$30 (and that's the official ones; who knows how cheap the knock-off/third party controllers will be?). Who needs a memory card when you have a built-in hard drive for your system? Oh and $50 for a damn DVD remote? Yah. Sure.

Speaking of the Xbox, a little birdy told me that one major company (starting with the letters "Act") has already gone through 4 Xbox dev kits. Reason? They all melted. Reminds me of the early Playstation days where you needed to keep a fan on your system just to make sure it didn't get all liquidy inside.

I've also heard rumours that the Xbox controller is under-going a much needed redesign so as to make it useable by people without freakishly over-sized hands, but I think it's too late in the game for these new controllers to go into production to make the first wave of Xbox shipments. If I were to buy an Xbox (which is more than a pipedream until I find new stable employment and several titles for the system are announced that I absolutely NEED), I would definitely shop around for a better controller.

Now that the burning rant feeling has subsided, I think I'll go get some much needed sleep. Z-file Arc 3 Episode 3 will arrive on the board circa late afternoon Monday my time. Promise. Or Tashi gets the Card Captor Sakura stuff she's been lusting after from my collection (not that she won't figure out some way to get it from me eventually anyway).

- Aaron (needs new job leads and a good night's rest)
