There was a bit of swearing in FF IX yet, but nothing major. FF VII had more, I recall, although they censored some of it with the %&*#@!-convention. I think FF VIII has some minor cursing too, but it's been a long time since I've played it. I am pretty sure those Nazi's at Nintendo would have altered the games based on their past policy. I don't know though, maybe things have changed enough recently.

They not only censor out cigarettes (as Achilles mentioned), but they censor out alcoholic beverages as well. Remember the characters ordering their ..... um, "soda pop" in the taverns in Chrono Trigger?
