Starter Motor Problem!

I have a recurring problem with my starter motor! Runs fine all year long until our annual pilgrimage to Cornwall which seems to send it out of sorts, (nothing that a very slight tap with a hammer does'nt sort out) but this is rather annoying especially as you need someone at the ignition to start it! This is a long suffering problem and one that several changes in starter motor have not rectified? I have owned my 1972 T2 for 18 years so would like to finally sort this out? Anyone any ideas? Please!
