Subject: Mayo & Walker

After seeing Mayo and Walker play last night, here are my two cents worth.

Mayo (the good) Can play point at a legitimate 6"4". Has all the physical skills, ball handling, passing, shooting, quickness, jumping ability. Anticipates well on defense and has the potential to be a strong defensive player.

(the bad) On this night he did not make his teammates better. Don't know if that was his fault or not. He tried to take the game over, and therefore took a number of ill advised shots. Shot only 35% because Reading employed a box and one and NCH could not figure it out.

Bill Walker (the good) Like OJ, physically talented. At 6'6" he looks to have all the skills needed to be a smaller forward in college. Jumps well, handles it well enough, and shoots it well enough. He is aggressive and a true competitor.

(the bad) He fouled out in part because he was too agressive. He also showed his emotions on his sleeve (I may too if I lost my whole season to an injury). Because of his leaping skills he tends to play defense like most big men in high school (look for the block first and play defense with your feet second).

Both players have D-I skills right now. But last night it showed that team play, discipline and good coaching can overcome talent. I should also say that Mayo and Walker scored all but 4 points for their team. I think that those two players are so dominant that the other players were hesitant to get involved which hurt the team. Also, Reading has a number of good shooters and got some close calls on fouls.
