Mike Pilgrim will make his announcement tomorrow on a college. He will sign early. His final list of schools are: Boston College, Cincinnati, Seton Hall, and Virginia.

His press conference will be at 2:45pm.

"Originally we thought 6'8 Mike Pilgram from Wolfeboro (Brewster Academy) NH was a near lock for the University of Cincinnati. However, now we're hedging our bets, because it appears that Seton Hall is a lot stronger than we originally thought and, as a result, we're now going on record saying that this race is too close to call, as we await tomorrow's scheduled press conference. Obviously the fact that Pilgram is a native of Cincinnati and the fact he's a prototypical Bobby Huggins type player weights in the Bearcats advantage. But Seton Hall also has a few things working in their favor, like the fact Pilgram is a relative of Pirates head coach Louie Orr, the fact the Pirates currently don't have an athletic combo forward like Pilgram, the fact the Pirates are in the media biggest media market in the nation, and the fact the Pirates already have two excellent recruits - 6'11 Grant Billmeier from Elizabeth (St. Patrick) NJ and 6'2 Jamar Nutter from West Orange (Seton Hall Prep) NJ - in the fold."

Maybe this is a good sign.

Brandon Bass was all set to wait and make his decision in the spring, but the Baton Rouge (LA) Capitol senior has trimmed his potential destinations to a manageable seven and could be ready to decide soon. However, no one school stands out.

"All of them have said they�ll give me the green light and let me do my thing, so there�s really no leader yet," Bass told PrepStars.com. "I like all of the schools and it�s even right now."

The finalists for the 6-7, 235-pound Bass are LSU, Cincinnati, UConn, Kentucky, Southern Cal, Miami and Mississippi State. Bass already has taken official visits to USC, LSU and Miami, and he has visited Mississippi State unofficially.

He can take two more official trips and will choose from UConn, Cincinnati and Kentucky.

Bass is considered more of a big forward, but he�s working on his ball-handling and perimeter shooting in order to be able to also play the wing in college. He averaged 18 points and 13 boards per game as a junior.

He said that playing time and an up-tempo game that suits his own playing style will be two primary factors when it comes down to him making a decision.

``The three schools I visited all said I�ll play anywhere from 35 to 38 minutes," Bass added. "All three play an up-tempo game and all three have nice coaches. They are all in nice cities as well."

Bass said that Mississippi State has been the most aggressive school in pursuing him and that one of the Bulldogs' future players � point guard Gary Ervin � has been trying to persuade him to go to Starkville. Bass also has pressure from LSU recruit Tack Minor to remain in Baton Rouge for college.

- If the remark is serious, he's a selfish player and we don't need him. The two most recent UC greats, Kenyon Martin and Steve Logan, didn't become First Team All-Americans by being selfish.....and neither will Jason Maxiell. If all Bass is interested in is himself, then he can go elsewhere. Nobody ever wins by themself, they need a good supporting cast. He ought to look at next year's lineup at UC and consider his supporting cast - Maxiell, Bobbitt, F. Williams, N. Williams, Whaley, Flowers, K. Johnson, Hicks, Kirkland, Moore, etc. Lance Williams and Bobby Simmons went to DePaul with the promise to "play 35 minutes a game" and look what it did for them. I don't think all of those schools are being honest about guaranteed playing time. Only the pathetic schools do that and UC is not pathetic. Bass may turn out to be another talented guy that took the easy road and ended up being less than his talent suggested. If he really wants to be the best, the only place he should consider is UC.       - I would to, if he has the same desire as Kenyon Martin, Steve Logan, and Jason Maxiell to be the best by working hard for everything and not having anything handed to him. That's how you become the best. It sounds like if he went to these other schools that are offering, that he'd be taking the easier road, and wouldn't have to work as hard. I've watched many top talented players take the easy road and end up on HARD street and quickly out of the NBA. UC is the only team in the NCAA to have a player drafted (doesn't mean they made the team), but drafted to the NBA for the last 8 consecutive years. Mike Pilgrim is done with his visits and he�s almost ready to make his decision. It comes down the chance to play at home for coach Bob Huggins at Cincinnati or the opportunity to play in the Big East at Seton Hall.

Though the thought of playing for the imposing Bearcats is very tempting, the 6-6 , 210-pound Cincinnati native, who is spending a year at Wolfeboro (NH) Brewster Academy, is first cousins with Seton Hall head man Louis Orr and the family tie is factoring into his ultimate decision.

``It�s going to be pretty close," said Pilgrim, who was getting offers from mid-majors until the past few months. "It�s a real big decision and I never thought it would come down to this. This is all a shock to me that great schools like Cincinnati, Seton Hall, Virginia, Boston College and Memphis like me, but it�s not going to stop me from doing what I�ve been doing � and that�s working hard.

``I didn�t really get too much sleep last night," added Pilgrim. "I went back and forth and just kept weighing the pros and cons at both places."

Pilgrim took official visits to BC and Seton Hall earlier this month, and just returned from a weekend in which he visited both Virginia and Cincinnati.

``I know I can get pushed at Cincinnati by Coach Huggins," said Pilgrim, who averaged 17.9 points and nine rebounds last season at Cincinnati Purcell Marian High. "I�ll be working hard every day because he doesn�t expect anything less. He�ll make me better."

The Bearcats offered about a week ago and according to Pilgrim, the delay on the timing of the offer was because of Pilgrim�s grades. Despite the fact that he scored a 24 on the ACT, Pilgrim needs to raise his core GPA at Brewster in order to be eligible as a freshman.

``Coach Huggins told me they weren�t recruiting anyone else at the wing position except for me," Pilgrim said. "I like them because I know I�d have a chance to compete for a spot my freshman year and the potential to start."

``Seton Hall has been recruiting me since last year and they offered at the beginning of the summer," he added. "He hasn�t promised me a starting spot or anything like that, which I like. I want to have to work for everything. It�s tough because Coach Orr�s family."

Pilgrim is a tremendous athlete who can drive to the basket and is working hard at improving his perimeter game while at Brewster. Some coaches see him as a combo forward while others project him more as a 3-2 guy.

Last week we told you that 6'8 Mike Pilgram from Wolfeboro (Brewster Academy) NH would be making an official visit to the University of Cincinnati over the weekend and now we're telling you that a verbal commitment by Pilgram to the Bearcats could be forthcoming just about any day now. And this makes perfect since, because Pilgram originally is from Cincinnati (Purcell-Marian) OH and is the prototypical Bobby Huggins-type athlete/slasher/combo forward. He's also dramatically improved since our Ohio Editor Chris Johnson ranked him #5 in his final rankings in the state for the Class of 2002, plus we understand that Pilgram has grown at least an inch since we saw him during the summer. Boston College, Seton Hall, Virginia, and Memphis are also still on Pilgram's list, but, assuming that we are proven correct, Pilgram's commitment will move the Bearcats recruiting class up to #2 on our list of the Top Recruiting Classes To-Date for the Class of 2003.

Unnoticed Prep Players become highly sought recruits is starting again this fall.

Femi Is Player To Watch This Winter

Femi Ibikunle, a 6-9, 245 pound power forward from the New Hampton School in New Hampton, N.H., has seen a number of programs come in to take a look at him this fall.

According to New Hampton Head Coach Jamie Arsenault, Louisville, Boston College, Connecticut, Memphis, St. John's and Iowa State are just a small sampling of the schools who have made the pilgrimage up to New Hampshire to see "Femi." Arsenault also told us that Cincinnati is also being considered. "Memphis has offered," Arsenault said. "Cincinnati is close to offering."

"He's been playing so well this fall," Arsenault said. "He's a natural."

A native of Africa, Ibikunle made his American debut this summer by playing with Mickey Walker's Donyell Marshall Foundation program at the adidas Big Time Tournament in Las Vegas, Nev.

Blessed with an excellent frame and a developing offensive game, Ibikunle has progressed rapidly at New Hampton this fall. Arsenault said that Femi picks up things very quickly, and that he could be his best big man on this year's squad.

That is saying something, since New Hampton will also have the services of 7-0 Julius Lamptey of Oklahoma this winter.

While many big time programs are interested in "Femi," he is not going to do anything this fall regarding his recruitment.

"Femi is not taking any visits now," Arsenault said. "He is going to take all of his visits in the spring."

These are players that were in Division 1 and transferred to a JUCO to work on their game and sometimes their grades:

Marcellus Sommerville - 6'7" F, was ranked #84 in Hoop Scoop's Class of 2001

Jack Marlowe - 7'0 C, went to Oklahoma State for 2 years, transferred out, was ranked #88 in Poop Scoop's Class of 2000.

Jue Micheal Young - 6'3" G, signed with LSU, I don't know if he ever played there.....goes to Chipola with Nick Williams. Ranked #68 in Poop's Class of 2000.

Harvey Thomas - 6'8" F, transferred to JUCO from G'town. Is considered a true stud. Ranked #45 by Poop in the class of 2001.

Julian Sensely - 6'8 PF, transferred from Iona to JUCO, was ranked #2 in Poop's 2001 Prep School players.

Maurecio Branwell - 6'9" PF, transferred from Seton Hall, was ranked #39 in Poop's 2001 Prep School players (5th year players)

Brandon Bender - 6'9" PF, transferred from L'ville, ranked #22 in the Class of 2001 by Poop.

Carlos Hurt - 6'0" PG, transferred from L'ville, ranked #5 in the Class of 2001 by Poop.

Tony Key - 6'10" C, at Vincennes, ranked #51 in the Class of 2001 by Poop.

I'm sure most aren't available......but all these guys were highly considered coming out of high school......I don't know how they're considered now.

"The big man from Colorado tells TigerRag.com that LSU has withdrawn the scholarship offer made to him earlier this year. According to Fazekas, Brady said the Tigers "already have a commitment from a big man" for 2003.

So far, LSU has verbal pledges from point guard Tack Minor and swing players Darnell Lazare and Regis Koundjia. The only "big men" the Tigers are recruiting heavily are power forwards Brandon Bass of Baton Rouge-Capitol and Ross Neltner of Fort Thomas, Ky.-Highlands.

According to what Minor tells Tiger Rag, a big reason he committed to LSU was to play with Bass, who will announce his commitment on his upcoming birthday." - some Poop

LSU pulled scholarship on big man Fazekas getting ready for Bass, I guess.

I receive E-mails from several people that "claim" to have inside info. I won't say that they're always right.....but they have been very right on occasion. Sometimes their info is way off the mark. I'm only the messenger......so don't blame me. Here goes:

UC thinks they're out on Bass......wow, really....I would have never guessed.....LOL.

They are pursuing Varem and Pilgrim for SF positions. He also mentioned some guy named Cartier Martin out of Texas......I've never heard of him.

He said UC thinks that during the coming high school and JUCO seasons that some new guys that are seniors and JUCO sophs will stand out and be available.......kinda like Kareem Johnson.......so they will be patient and see how it plays out. His point is that so many programs have already nearly completed their recruiting for 2003 and don't have any scholarships available or that with the committed recruits they have lined up.......it would be hard to lure somebody looking for immediate playing time to their program......that's where UC could luck out.

We shall see.

I've let this go hoping everyone would get it out of their systems. I don't know why everybody fights on this board. I would say it's because of the no password system, but everyone attacking each other usually uses their usual name, so that can't be it. I would like to think we could all just be somewhat cival with each other. I know this board isn't much, but I've always enjoyed reading the opinions of our regular posters on UC's recruiting. I don't post everyday, but I'm on the board several times a day. There's plenty for us to talk about. The 2 commitments UC has received have been rated as the #3 class in the country by ESPN. We still have 2 scholarships to go! Huggs is putting together a great class! UC's in on a number of top JRs as well. There's plenty for us to talk about.

Funny little story that doesn't really have anything to do with anything, but I get a chuckle every now and then thinking about it. I once was driving a car in Columbus while there to see Shannon Brown, Brandon Foust, and Andrew Lavender play at an AAU tourney. I was driving, a friend of mine was in the passanger seat, and in the back seat....KB and bearcatattack. I know you all must be wondering how the car didn't careen of a cliff from all the fighting going on in the back seat, but that was before the two of them hated each other. Like I said, this story doesn't have anything to do with anything, but it's kinda funny knowing how the two of them go at each other now.

Anyway. Guys, let's PLEASE try to get along before all the regular posters of this board get tired of all the crap and quit logging on. I know this board isn't much, but I created it, and I'd hate to see it die off because people couldn't stand all the fighting anymore and quit visiting it. As always, I thank all of you for being regulars on this board, and I hope we can all get back to the recruiting talk.

I do not feel like I've attacked him until now. He started being really rude to me for no reason at all.......not that I really care......but I always assumed we could all get along. I never thought I'd be arguing over such petty things as who knew what first and who knows more about Bearcat Recruiting. I could really care less. But when people start accusing you of things that aren't true, you feel the need to fight back. I'm sorry for that. I generally post things I've been told, have been rumored, or even things we all pretty much know.

Let's be honest......there is no one on this board that is a true insider......not even KB. I know no one down at UC that even really knows him that well. By listening to the guy, you'd think he had dinner with Huggs every night.

I really think we're all just speculating about 90% of the time and the other 10% of the time, one of us gets some hot info that is right on target.

I'm tired of this stupidity and miss the recruiting part of this board. I will be spending my time on CUSA-talk. Sorry to Rob, because this use to be a very good message board.......but it has become a breeding ground for babies.

I dont think fighting over his final official visit with 2 other schools that are way behind UC in time spent recruiting Bass looks real good for UC's chances.Which is a shame he would make a unreal combo with Max and Hicks.But what High School kid have the Cats been successful with this year? Take all JC players and kick ass in 2003 add Brandon Bender and Jeff Varem to Whaley and Williams and that's a top 5 class not to mention ready to make a National title run in 2003

- Yeah, it's time to move on. As always, I think a kid is making a mistake by not choosing UC (of course I'm biased). UC is the ONLY program to have atleast one player drafted each of the last consecutive 8 seasons. This program and style of play is set up to be an NBA style develpment of players. Any kid that wants to go to the NBA should strongly consider UC. Bass loves Kenyon Martin and likes to lift weights. He's self motivated to improve and be the best......sounds like Logan and Kenyon Martin. If he goes to LSU and plays with Tack, he'll rarely see the ball. If he goes to UC, he'll see it alot. Next season if Bass came: PG Moore, SG Bobbitt/ Field Williams SF Bass PF Maxiell C Whaley.........think about it. They list Bass, Longar Longar, Olu Famitimi, Tyler Smith, and basically no one else of any significance.

How's one suppose to know who they're recruiting. One person close to UC told me that they do that because their CUSA competitors go after the same kids once they find out who UC is recruiting. In fact, he told me that Louisville really wasn't high on Diakite, but didn't want UC to get both Whaley and Diakite from Barton County, so they snatched Diakite before UC could get him. UC had interest in Diakite and knew that Whaley and Diakite had become good friends. And thinking back, it does seem like when UC is listed for a kid, that suddenly Pitino and Calipari (especially him) suddenly have interest in the kid. I guess they think addition by subtraction (from UC) is another way of knocking UC down. It was explained to me, that that's why UC is keeping things mum on future recruits. Just what I was told. Take it with a grain of salt but it kinda makes sense.

  - I disagree. Pitino wants to win CUSA first and then it all.......stopping UC is his first priority. Diakite is a good player......but not the top of the rung.....I was surprised they signed him, especially considering that they have Dartez (6'10") coming in this year from Vincennes. Diakite will be a backup for 2 years......he would have been better served going to UC......he would have played more minutes sooner and especially his senior year because Johnson, Hollman, Land, Flowers, and possible Whaley would all be gone then. - Everyone is 6'6" to 6'8".......but so what? Danny Fortsen was only 6'7", but his shoulder width allowed him to grab alot of rebounds. Charles Barkley was only 6'4" but was usually in the top 5 of the NBA in rebounds every year. Who's the better rebounder? 6'10" Donald Little, 7'0" B.J. Grove, or 6'5" Jason Maxiell? I know it's just the first practice but here is what I observed:

1) Huggins looks great, he was joking with the crowd, walking around and just being Bob. The only thing I even noticed different about him was a softer voice.

2) Stokes did get noticeably bigger. He should have a good year.

3)Tony Bobbit can flat out score. He is going to be a great player and maybe our leading scorer. He is also a character so he should be fun.

4) Hicks did not look healthy. He played in the scrimmage regularly but he didn't really look like he had his full "hops". He was trying to do some nice dunks in warmups and stuff so maybe it feels all right but it doesn't look like he has all his strength back yet. I could just be overreacting though, maybe I just expected him to be more of a high-flyer.

5)BJ was not there. Hugs said that he won't touch the floor until he is down to 270 lbs. and that the ball is in his court.

6)Chadd Moore is quick and should be a very nice backup for Taron.

7)Field was taking the ball to the hole. This is huge in my opinion.

8)Rod Flowers post moves were tremendous, he really couldn't be stopped in the few times that he had it down there.

9)Kareem Johnson is not nearly as "large" as I thought he would be. He does not have excess fat, he is in good shape, as is Land, who looked solid.

Forget what the critics say, this team looks like another top 15, if not top 10 finisher. We will once again win C-USA in my opinion. I am excited to get the year started!

I've been hearing, for what seems like a year, about how close Matt Terwilliger (sp??) is to verballing. Can any of you provide insight as to why he hasn't yet, or when he might?

Don't laugh at me too loud if he already has, not that it would do any good, since I can't hear you through the computer. Anyhow, I haven't heard anything lately.

What does everyone think of 2003 recruiting so far? Even though we've verballed only two, it seems like we filled voids a lot better with who we ended up with than the "dream team" of Minor, Gibbs, Taylor, Bass... would have. No ill will toward the latter group, but I say it mainly because it seems Whaley should be ready to go in the post from day one when we definitely need him to, and Nick (love that name Nick for a PG!) will arrive just as Taron leaves. Moreover, I think PG and the post are the two most important positions on the court.

Thoughts? Agreements? Disagreements?

Im guessing UC's 4th scholarship will go to a underated post player in the spring maybe the likes of Thompson,Mike Pilgrim or a Center that will surface later.Brandon Bender is still uncommited and playing 2 miles from UC

Depending on who's talking, Lorenzo Thompson is either a true
wing blessed with the strength and body to bang down low, or
he is an undersized power type who has the ability to step out on
the perimeter.

Regardless of which theory one buys into, the 6-7, 230-pound
Thompson, a star at Chicago (IL) Crane Tech, is a unique talent
who is deserving of some high-major attention.

"It (recruiting) is going alright, I'm really just taking my time
trying to see where I fit in the best," Thompson told
PrepStars.com. "There's a couple of schools like Depaul, Cincy
and UConn that I like along with some others."

Exactly where Thompson fits best is a really good question.
With his combination of size, strength and above average
athleticism he can be a good scorer when operating exclusively
on the low blocks. And his ability to handle the ball allows him to
be pretty quick to the basket for a big man.

Thompson also has plenty of spring to finish above the rim,
while he has improved his ability to step outside and hit
perimeter jumpers, make sharp passes and take defenders off
the dribble.

However, like many of his counterparts with similar skill sets,
Thompson has a tendency to fall in love with the perimeter
game and float outside, which limits his productivity at times.

Thompson recognizes his inside/outside abilities and while he
prefers to play on the perimeter, says that he is working to find
an even mix. He also sees other areas where he could improve.

"Really, just getting into better shape is important," said
Thompson. "Once I get in shape, I'll be ready to make the jump
to college. I'm just conditioning hard and doing my best to get
stronger."

While he would prefer to make a fall decision, all signs are
pointing toward the spring -- Thompson has yet to set up or take
any official visits.

Having to take his time in a decision won't bother the big man.
He'll be able to focus on the ACT (he's one point short) and can
improve an already-solid 2.9 GPA.

Like most other players, Thompson is looking for a school
where the fit with the coaches and players is best. He's also
looking for a solid academic school and early playing time, two
more factors common to many recruits. But what sets him apart
is a very realistic view of playing time as a freshman.

"I'd love to get 20 or 30 minutes at the start, that would be real quality," said Thompson. "But really,
your freshman year is all about learning the system and adjusting academically so that you can
take care of things as a junior and senior."

Ive been told Chris Lofton 6-2 combo guard from Maysville,Ky will be at UC for Brunch basketball practice opening.Im not sure UC has offered but Lofton does have offers from Louisville and Indiana.
He's a quicker guard than Jamar Butler and is a very nice 3 point shooter around 50%.Lofton is more of a 2 guard than Point.Kentucky would be his favorite but they have not offered a scholarship yet.Looks like UC and Indiana are his top 2

Take this with a grain of salt, but I heard Eric Hicks is walking with a very bad limp. A kid that atttends UC told me this. I thought nothing of it at first because I read the story today in the paper. Little did I know that the surgery was over a month ago. Wasn't really paying attention to the date when I read the article today. Arthroscopic surgery doesn't take a month to heal from, ask Moe Clarrett of Ohio State. If Eric is healthy, he has a strange way of showing it. Has anyone seen him at school, and if so, what do you all think?

Latest Bass story -- UC#1, 14:10:28 10/01/02 Tue

OK, so Brandon Bass took a few official visits. Big deal, right? He said earlier this month he
wants to wait until the spring but how does he feel now?

"It's still [late] but I've been thinking about signing early," Bass said. "Right now I think it's still the
spring. I want to get it all out of the way before my basketball season. When it starts I'm not
taking anymore visits."

Two weeks ago, Bass made a pilgrimage to LSU. "That's the home school. The big thing about
LSU is that they are the home school." Bass said that recent LSU commitment Tack Minor was on
the official visit with him.

Following the trip to the Bayou, Bass went further south to Miami for a visit. "It was straight.
There's excitement down there. They are saying I'll be the marquee player if I come there. The
city is pretty nice."

Bass said that he doesn't have any other official visits set but he's got a few in mind. "I'm going
to go to maybe Cincinnati and UConn. That's what I'm thinking about. Maybe Kentucky."

Mississippi State and Southern Cal are a few more schools to watch. Bass said USC has asked
him to set up an official visit.

I read article after article about this kid or that and really, there's nobody else we're recruiting that hard. I can only think we don't know who else they're recruiting.

I wonder if Huggs slammed the door on Minor or vice versa?

I wonder how this will impact Bass?

I'm sure if we get Bass we don't take Varem. If we don't get Bass, I'm sure we go after Varem......SF.

        This year looks good, but I feel it's a tune-up for next season. Don't forget, Nick Williams is no slouch at 3 pt. shooting. Nick, Field and Bobbitt will be a handful from 3 pt. range. Add Whaley, Maxiell, Hicks, K. Johnson, Flowers and maybe another and the rebounds should be no problem. Also, Chadd Moore will be a sophomore and will contribute more after a year of learning. I think Kirkland may be a surprise and after his frosh year, may be ready to give steady play at SF. Plus he shoots the 3 pretty well, also. Next season will be nice. I would have liked to have him because he's like a secret weapon (unguardable).....but with our load of guards and Butler coming in......really didn't need him. LSU gives too much freedom to players and they don't learn and improve. I can see him being the same selfish player when he's a senior.
