• Here is what I've heard about UC recruiting........ -- Chatter, 15:56:58 02/18/03 Tue
  I recently received an E-mail telling me that UC's recruiting direction is this:
  
  They have 3 scholarships remaining; they could use 1 more this year - 2003 and 2 more next year considering Jamar Butler has already verballed; or they could use the remaining 3 all next year - 2004;
  
  What UC would like to happen:
  
  2003 - sign Alexander Johnson in the Spring - 6'10" currently at Bridgton Academy - prep school. He spurned UC once and currently says he's down to UC and Indiana and will take visits to both.
  
  2004 - Guy Ngarndi, 6'7" of Louisville is possibly going the prep school route (Brewster Academy?). Sign him next fall for the 2004 class.
  
  2004 - JUCO Big Man, Sani Ibrahim, 6'11" - will return for his second year of JUCO at the College of Southern Idaho. Sign him next Fall for the 2004 class. Hope he doesn't go pro.
  
  I've been told, they are UC's 3 main targets.
  
  UC has already begun recruiting for 2005 and 2006.
  
  I don't think Brandon Bender is in the picture. If Bender plays 2 year's at Cincy State, he'll have only one year of eligibility left at Division 1 College B-Ball. I look for Bender to end up at some desperate college that will put up an egomaniac just to take or think it will take their program to the next level. I could see a St. Louis or ECU type program taking a chance.

  Dayton is one of many schools that has their eyes on local talent, Troy’s junior Matt Terwilliger. Matt was in attendance last night for Dayton’s 87-68 victory over George Washington.
  
  “It was a good game, Dayton played really well,” Matt told FlyerHoops. “They share the ball well.”
  
  Terwilliger is a 6-9 power forward/center for the Troy Trojans. He is averaging around 16 points and eight rebounds this season, but the team is struggling. Matt blamed the struggle on the inexperience saying they do not start a senior on the team.
  
  He is currently interested in six schools, listing Dayton, Cincinnati, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Michigan State, and Xavier. He said he has received offers from all of these schools.
  
  “I am not really going to worry about it until the season is over. Part of the reason is I am not sure what I want to major in, so I haven’t been able to pursue any of these schools.”
  
  “Dayton is a really nice school, and it has a great family environment,” Matt explained. “It seems like they are all good friends and it’s a great atmosphere.”
  
  “It’s different from these big schools where it’s you play basketball and then you are on your own.”
  
  Matt said he will either be at the Cincinnati-Louisville game or the Dayton-Xavier game next Saturday. “I know Mike (Hall) is going (to the Dayton-Xavier game), I might try to go with him.”
  
  It may help that Troy plays their first round tournament game against Colonel White in UD Arena at 9:00 p.m. following the Xavier game.
  
  Terwilliger has not taken his ACT or SAT tests yet, but said he will be doing so in April.

  Guy Ngarndi didn't need to score tons of points this summer to show that he has the potential to be a high major prospect.
  
  A native of the Cameroon, Ngarndi suited up this summer for the Derek Smith All-Stars at the adidas Big Time Tournament in Las Vegas. And while Rajon Rondo, David Cornwell and Ross Neltner were racking up most of the points for that team, Ngarndi kept the opposition from scoring.
  
  A quick and explosive 6-7, 210 pound power forward from Western H.S. in Louisville, Ky., Ngarndi runs the floor swiftly and challenges tons of shots on the defensive end. While he didn't show much of an offensive game in Las Vegas, he displayed some tools that other players in the Class of 2003 simply don't possess.
  
  Ngarndi told Rivalshoops.com that Western Kentucky, Appalachian State, Pepperdine, San Francisco and San Diego State are the colleges showing the most interest in him this fall.
  
  He's also had some contact with Louisville, as he's a frequent visitor to the UL campus who engages in pick up games with the Cardinal players.
  
  Ngarndi said he's been lifting weights every day since school began, and has added 10 pounds to his frame since the last time we saw him in Las Vegas.
  
  He's only been in the United States for about six months, so there could be some academic hurdles for him to clear in order to be eligible at a Division I program.
  
  He is going to take the ACT for the first time in October, so he can't take any official visits until he posts a score.

  ........We bring this up because 6'2 Jr Rajon Rondo from Louisville (Eastern) KY achieved legendary status last month in the Louisville Invitational Tournament, as he set the all-time tournament scoring record with 148 points in five games, as he averaged 29.6 ppg, 10.4 rpg, 5.4 apg, and 5.1 spg. Rondo also scored 47 points, which is second highest individual single game scoring performance in L.I.T. history, in the semi-finals against Louisville (Pleasure Ridge Park) KY, which at the time was the #1-ranked team in the state. Rondo has always used his incredible athleticism to thrive in transition, but this season he's taken his game to another level, as his ball handling and passing skills have greatly improved and he's one of the best rebounders we've seen in a long time considering his lack of size. However, we still question the consistency on Rondo's jump shot, as well as his grades, attitude, and whether he's the lock that a lot of people seem to think he is for the University of Louisville. Sure, the Cardinals have interest in Rondo, but they also are believed to be among the leaders for a number of the top guards, including 5'11 Jr Sebastian Telfair from Brooklyn (Lincoln) NY, 6'4 Arron Afflalo from Compton (Centennial) CA, 6'2 Jr Russell Robinson from New York (Rice) NY, and 6'3 Jr Chris Lofton from Maysville (Mason County) KY, in the junior class nationally. In other words, Rondo's recruitment is just as wide open, as the direction his career may take in the future.
  And Rondo isn't the only player in the state who has already achieved a legendary status, but who has plenty of questions that have yet to be answered. Obviously we're talking about 6'3 O.J. Mayo from Ashland (Rose Hill) KY, who not only is the consensus #1-ranked 8th grader in the nation, but also perhaps the best player in the state regardless of class. As a matter of fact, Rick Bolus, the Editor & Publisher of the High Potential Recruiting Service, ranked Mayo ahead of Rondo as the best player in the state in his February Report. And Bolus might be right, because Mayo is savvy beyond his years and is already so skilled, athletic, and mature that he's capable of dominating right now against the top juniors and seniors in high school. But will Mayo grow any more? If he doesn't, he'll have to project as a point guard, especially if he wants to play in the NBA someday. Mayo does have good ball handling and passing skills and, as a result, often brings the ball up the court and starts the offense for his high school team. However, he also has a tendency to take bad shots and force things when he's under a lot of pressure. And how good an outside shooter is Mayo? His 3-point shot looks good at times, but he lacks consistency, which will be necessary for him to develop into a big time college 2-guard. Remember, we're not just talking about another good player. Instead, there are people out there who think Mayo is going to be the next LaBron James, which is something that isn't going to happen, unless he grows five or six inches and improves dramatically in a number of different areas. We also aren't sure how much better Mayo will get? Not only does it appear that Mayo matured early, but the word is that he's almost two years older than his grade. To illustrate our point even further, after attending the 14-Under National AAU Tournament in Orlando, FL and, as a result, having seen nearly all of the top players in the grade ahead of him, I think it is safe to say I would not rank Mayo among the top 10 players in the Class of 2006, which really is class he should be in. In other words, what you see might be what you get. But probably still will be good enough for Mayo to project in the 15-30 range nationally in his class when he's a senior in high school.
  Also very much in the air is the race for Kentucky's Mr. Basketball. Our guess is that 6'8 Ross Neltner from Ft. Thomas (Highlands) KY will win this coveted honor, because he's been there the longest and the strongest. However, our Kentucky Editor Larry Kihnley ranks 6'7 Justin Doellman from Union (Ryle) KY as the top senior in the state. As a matter of fact, Kihnley thinks Doellman is a poor man's Michael Dunleavy. "Obviously he's not as good nor is he as athletic as Dunleavy," say Kihnley. "But I like the comparison, because Doellman has a wiry frame, is very skilled, and offensively gets to the hole, dunks, and shoots the three." And unlike Neltner, who may not be athletic enough nor big and strong enough to be more than a good role player LSU, Doellman appears to be a perfect fit for Xavier, which stole him when he was a junior. The guy with the most name recognition in the state is 6'3 Michael Bush from Louisville (Male) KY, but the value of Bush's stock has dropped dramatically during the last year-and-a-half, because he doesn't play hard. Bush, who also is the best senior football prospect in the state, has also been plagued by injuries this season and, as a result, he's let it be known that he plans to concentrate exclusively on football in college. The most naturally gifted player in the class might just be 6'6 David Cornwell from Louisville (Western) KY, but he has no shot at winning Mr. Basketball, because he's only played briefly the last two seasons. As a matter of fact, Cornwell is now at his fourth high school and has a record of off-the-court problems so bad that even most junior colleges will be afraid to take him. However, if Cornwell ever gets his act together, he's ideally suited as an undersized power forward for the mid-major level. The player with the most potential in the senior class appears to be 6'7 Guy Ngarndi from Louisville (Western) KY, but right now his defense is way ahead of his offense as his forte is shot blocking, rebounding, and defending. The biggest sleeper in the senior class is 6'5 Donte Sweatt from Louisville (Pleasure Ridge Park) KY, who currently is ranked first on his team in scoring, second in both shot blocking and rebounding, and third in assists. But this versatile athlete, who is equally effective both inside and outside, doesn't get the attention or notoriety that he deserves, because he does everything so effortlessly. Also still available in the senior class is 6'2 Sean Booker from Louisville (Ballard) KY, but he needs to become more consistent and develop a true position in order to be a steal at the mid-major level.
  Originally we thought the next great class in Kentucky was going to be the Class of 2004, but 6'8 Jr Robbie Simpson, who was the #2-ranked player in the class a year ago, transferred when school started last fall from Louisville (Seneca) KY to Durham (Mt. Zion Christian) NC. We also didn't know that 6'3 Jr William Graham from Lexington (Catholic) KY wasn't going to grow. If you will recall, Graham was projected to be 6'7 or 6'8 by now. And how about 6'5 Jr Shawn Ballard from Richmond (Madison Central) KY not getting any better than he was two years ago when he was part of a good supporting cast as a freshman? However, Rondo and 6'3 Jr Chris Lofton from Maysville (Mason County) KY, who was the MVP in the King of the Bluegrass, have both exceeded expectations and 6'10 Jr Terrance Farley from Louisville (Pleasure Ridge Park) KY continues to make strides. The sophomore class lacks size, but 5'11 Soph JuJuan Spillman from Louisville (Pleasure Ridge Park) KY, 6'2 Soph Maurice Grinter from Fairdale (H.S.) KY, 5'11 Soph Dominic Tilford from Jeffersontown (H.S.) KY, 5'11 Soph Aaron Cash from Mt. Vernon (Rockcastle County) KY, and 6'4 Soph Ravon Lee from Louisville (Ballard) KY are all good enough to keep an eye on. In contrast, the freshman class features several players with quality size in 6'9 Jr Josh Clemons from Hartford (Ohio County) KY and 6'6 Frosh Patrick Elliott from McKee (Jackson County) KY, as well as a big time athlete in 6'3 Frosh Bill Walker, who promises to help Mayo provide Rose Hill with the best one-two punch in the state for years to comes.

  Is Chris Lofton a lock for Louisville? I thought he was considering UC at one time? I like the comments about Guy Ngarndi........reminds me of Kenyon. I read awhile back an article about Ngarndi doing some drill off the backboard that coach Huggs has only seen one other player be able to do and that Kenyon Martin. I also hear Ngarndi plays taller than he is.
  
  I can't believe all the raving about Doellman. I've had people tell me he's not that good. Xavier got a steal, huh? Sounds to me like they're going the "caucasian" route.....lol.

  I've sent out e-mails to many people on this board and on the CUSA-talk board regarding inside info on recruiting. Many of you responded, but still others haven't and I'm waiting to hear from you. Here is what I've gathered so far and what most think will happen:
  
  Between 2003 (1 schollie left) and 2004 (3 or 4 depending on using 1 in 2003) but a total of 4 left between both years.
  
  Here are the general consensus recruits:
  2004 Jamar Butler (already verballed)
  2004 Matt Terwilliger
  2003 Guy Ngardi (I thought he was 2004....need a clarification)
  2004 Sani Ibrahim (JUCO transfer from College of Southern Idaho)
  
  Most think that Butler and Ngardi are locks to be Bearcats (and Butler has verballed).
  Terwilliger seems to be more wide open than he was last Summer.
  Sani could go pro but like Whaley really needs some Division 1 seasoning. Some feel pretty confident that he will be a Bearcat......surprisingly.
  One person told me not to rule out getting Norm Plummer at Brewster Academy playing with future Bearcat Mike Pilgrim.
  
  I read stories about how Andy Kennedy was on a recruiting trip.....I wonder who else they're recruiting.
  
  Some interesting scenarios are that we really are covered on guards for awhile if you consider Kirkland and White viable guard options. If you do, consider this:

  When Ohio High School Basketball is mentioned these days, the first name always comes to mind is 6'7 LeBron James from Akron (St. Vincent-St. Mary) OH, both nationally and internationally. If you don't believe it, just ask any talented teenage basketball player abroad and he'll tell you all about James and the $50,000 Hummer that James recently received from his mother for his birthday. It's a foregone conclusion that James will be announced as the first pick in the NBA Draft in June, but there still are several milestones left for James to achieve at the high school level. Most important is to lead his team to an undefeated season, which would ensure both a mythical national championship and a third state championship in four years for St. Vincent -St. Mary. Speaking of St. Vincent-St. Mary having an undefeated season, the toughest game they will likely have the rest of season is Akron (Central Hower) OH. Why Central Hower? Because James would have gone to Central Hower, if he had attended public high school and, as a result, Central Hower's players not only grew up playing against James, but have no fear playing against him. Central Hower also has three Division I prospects in Akron-bound 6'6 Jeremiah Wood, 6'6 Dajuan Dennis; and 6'3 Jr Tony Sykes, plus they played St. Vincent-St. Mary's extremely tough twice last season. As far as individual award for James are concerned, he will win an unprecedented Mr. Basketball for the third time this spring and he will be the first player to play in at least three spring all-star games since the NCAA instituted a rule in the early 80s', whereby, a player can only participate in two post-season all-star games and remain eligible to play Division I basketball. James also is expected to be on the cover of Time Magazine and the subject of an investigative news story by 60-Minutes.
  As a matter of fact, about the only thing you can't count on from James is for him to be part of next year's incoming college freshman class. However, if James had gone to college, there is little doubt that he would be joining 6'8 Ivan Harris from Mouth of Wilson (Oak Hill) VA at Ohio State next year. If you will recall, when Harris was at Springfield (South) OH, prior to transferring to Mouth of Wilson (Oak Hill) VA last spring, he was the #2 -ranked junior in the state behind James. Whether Harris will be named to the prestigious McDonald's All-American Team is still a question yet to be answered. But, if he does make the McDonald's Team, this presents a very interesting question that even our Ohio Editor Chris Johnson can't answer. When was the last time the Buckeye state produced three McDonald's All-Americans? Remember, a third player in the state - 5'7 Andrew Lavender from Columbus (Brookhaven) OH is ranked #10 nationally in the senior class by the HOOP SCOOP. He also was the best player we saw on the second day at the NIKE All-American Camp, plus he was our Player-of-the-Summer, after leading All-Ohio Red to the championship of the NIKE Peach Jam in North Augusta, SC and a second-place finish in the 17-Under National AAU Tournament in Orlando, FL. Lavender also led Columbus (Brookhaven) OH to the Division I State Final Four two years ago, the Division I State Championship last year, and this year they are not only attempting to win back-to-back state championships, but arguably should be ranked as high as #2 in the nation in the latest national high school polls. If you will recall, Brookhaven's only loss this season came in overtime against St. Vincent-St. Mary on December 28th.
  In other words, Lavender, who is one of the only great in-state players to get away from the Buckeyes in recent years, is just like James in a variety of ways, despite the fact he's a foot shooter in height. Not only are they two of the most exciting players high school players in the senior class nationally, but they both are tremendous competitors and winners in the true sense of the word, as is evident by the fact they are more concerned about leading their team to victory than individual statistics. And similar to St. Vincent-St. Mary, who more often than not intimidates the powerhouse teams they've played around the nation, Brookhaven's biggest test the rest of the way is expected to come against Worthington (Thomas Worthington) OH, which features 6'6 Joe Davis, 6'2 Kevin Anderson, 6'9 Mike Newman, and 6'5 Tommy Young, who is committed to Air Force, in the regional finals. And just like James, who is complemented by 6'6 Romeo Travis, 5'8 Dru Joyce, 6'5 Sian Cotton, 6'5 Jr Preston Sims, 6'0 Jr Corey Jones, and 6'2 Frosh Marcus Johnson, Lavender has a great supporting cast. As a matter of fact, Foust, who is ranked #74 nationally in the senior class by the HOOP SCOOP, is good enough for the University of Oklahoma to take as part of the Lavender-package. Also taking care of business for Brookhaven inside is 6'5 Soph Jamelle Cornley, who is ranked as the #2 sophomore in the state by Johnson, while 6'0 Jr Denzel Lyles and 6'6 Jr Everett Spencer provide athleticism and scoring out on the perimeter. Not only are these arguably the two best programs in both the state and the nation, James and Lavender might be the best two players in the same class that this state as ever seen.
  The senior class also has plenty of depth, as 6'5 C.J. Anderson from Cincinnati (Winton Woods) OH, who is expected to go the prep school route next year at Chatham (Hargrave Military) VA, also has top 100 talent and potential, especially if he works on his perimeter game. And, of course, one of the big reasons why Mid-American Conference is one of the best mid-major conferences in college basketball is because schools in this conference annually get more than their fair share of the top players in the state. This year's Mid-American Conference crop includes 6'8 Monty St. Clair from Cincinnati (Roger Bacon) OH, 6'7 Nathan Peavy from Dayton (Chaminade-Julienne) OH, and 6'7 Eric Van Buskirk from Cincinnati (Loveland) OH to Miami-OH; 6'6 Reggie Harwell from East Cleveland (Shaw) OH and 6'11 Matt Lefeld from Coldwater (H.S.) OH to Bowling Green; 6'6 Romeo Travis from Akron (St. Vincent-St. Mary) OH, 5'8 Dru Joyce from Akron (St. Vincent-St. Mary) OH, 6'6 Jeremiah Wood from Akron (Central Hower) OH to Akron; 6'4 Demetrius Johnson to Kent State; 6'7 Craig Cashen from Cincinnati (St. Xavier) OH to Eastern Michigan; and 6'7 Eric Clemmons from Cincinnati (Reading) OH to Ohio University. Also getting their share of this year's bumper crop of mid-major players from Ohio are Western Kentucky, which got 6'11 Josh Higgins from Vandalia (Butler) OH; Dayton which got 6'2 Chris Spears from Centerville (H.S.) OH; Western Carolina, which got 6'1 Kyle Greathouse from Lancaster (H.S.) OH; Radford, which got 6'5 Anthony Teague from Cleveland (Shaker Heights) OH; Air Force, which got 6'5 Tommy Young from Worthington (Thomas Worthington) OH; Liberty, which got 6'3 David Dees from Dayton (Christian) OH; Wofford, which got 6'2 Curtis Ingram from Youngstown (Mooney) OH; and Morehead State, which got 6'0 Josh Reed from East Liverpool (H.S.) KY and 6'9 Kevin McDonald from Cincinnati (Harrison) OH.
  As we've previously reported, the junior class is dominated with great size, as three of the top six players in the class - 6'10 Jr Matt Terwilliger from Troy (H.S.) OH, 7'0 Seth Gorney from Vandalia (Butler) OH, and 7'0 Aaron Agnew from Bellaire (H.S.) OH - are 6'9 or taller and 10 of the top 20 players in the class are 6'6 or taller. Terwillinger is a 6'9 athletic white kid who needs to get bigger and stronger and become more consistent. However, schools, like Ohio State, Cincinnati, Notre Dame, Michigan, and Michigan State love his upside and vast potential. Ohio State also is the favorite over schools like Michigan State, Kansas, Iowa, Kentucky, Indiana, and Xavier for Gorney, who is similar physically to Syracuse's Craig Forth, but plays more like former Kentucky/Villanova star Mike Bradley, although Gorney is not quite as explosive nor as athletic as Bradley. Agnew, at 6'9, 350 lbs., needs to drop at least 50 pounds, but he's got great hands and surpringly quick feet. So it comes as no surprise that schools like Xavier, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Kentucky, West Virginia, and Purdue are all showing a lot of interest. The mystery man in the class is 6'7 Jr Josh Duncan from Cincinnati (Moeller) OH. The reason most people don't know much about and/or haven't seen Duncan is because he has never left the state to play AAU basketball, much less play much AAU basketball period. However, this 6'7, 210 pounder, who is very skilled and athletic, could end up being the best player in the class.
  And that's saying a lot, because 6'3 Jr Jamar Butler from Lima (Shawnee) OH, who is not only ranked #34 nationally in the junior class by the HOOP SCOOP, but also has the talent, athleticism, and potential to be one of the best guards Bobby Huggins has ever landed at the University of Cincinnati. Right now Duncan is getting the most attention from schools like Michigan State, Ohio State, Xavier, Cincinnati, Kentucky, N.C. State, and Marquette, but once the word gets out this spring and summer, Ducan's recruitment should go off the hook. Johnson's #5-ranked junior is also having a breakout year. We're talking about 6'6 Jr Brandon Ivey and this silky-smooth scorer has added upper body strength and, as a result, is now more of a force around the basket, as well as out on the perimeter. We also have to mention 6'5 Jr Justin Orr, but he's got to get bigger and stronger in order for Seton Hall head coach Louis Orr, who is Orr's uncle, to offer him a scholarship. Some other big men who have the potential to move a lot higher in the junior class are 6'9 Jr Chris Moore from Lakewood (St. Edward) OH, 7'0 Jr Drew Walker from Port Clinton (H.S.) OH, and 6'8 Jr Josh Yanke from Massillon (Jackson) OH, but the biggest sleeper in the junior class might be 6'6 Jr Everett Spencer from Columbus (Brookhaven) OH. Spencer, who is the 5th option, behind Lavender, Foust, Cornley, and Lyles, has grown from 5'9 to 6'6 in a-year-and-a-half and, possesses point guards skills.
  In sharp contrast to the junior class, the sophomore class doesn't have a single player over 6'7 who is ranked among the top 20 players in the state. But it does have some strength on the perimeter, as six of the top eight players in the class play either the two or the three spot. And right at the top of the list is 6'6 Soph Ben Raymond from Toledo (St. Johns) OH, who not only has emerged as the top sophomore in the state, but is the big reason why Toledo (St. Johns) OH, which also features 6'1 Jr Brian Roberts, who is the #10-ranked junior in the state ,and 6'5 Soph Zach Hillesland, who is the #20-ranked sophomore in the state, is the team from Ohio that all the nation tournament directors, like Bobby Jacobs, Donnie Wilkie,et al., should be targeting to get into their field next December. Raymond, who is still growing, is a big-time talent and multi-dimensional athlete, as is evident by the fact that he's the second leading scorer (19.5 ppg) and third leading rebounder (8.0 rpg) in Toledo, OH this year. So it should come as no surprise that he's already being heavily recruited by schools like Ohio State, Michigan State, Michigan, Cincinnati, and Purdue. Mike Price's Cincinnati AAU team should be just as dangerous as ever, because 6'7 Soph Ross Morin and 6'2 Soph John Wolf, who are ranked #3 and #5 in the sophomore class, respectively, are both great 3-pointers. But a lack of outside shooting is the one thing holding back 6'2 Soph Travis Walton, who is our #4-ranked sophomore in the state. However, Walton is a tenacious defensive player, plus he has a tremendous build at 6'2, 190 lbs, and is extremely quick on his feet. Rounding out the top five sophomores in the state is 6'5 Soph Jamelle Cornley from Columbus (Brookhaven) OH, who continues to be a force inside, while playing much taller than his 6'5 height. However, Cornley needs to grow at least several more inches in order to be a high Division I prospect.
  The only class in Ohio that gets Johnson as excited about the current senior class is the Class of 2006. As a matter of fact, Ohio's freshman class mirrors the great freshman class nationally, as 6'4 Frosh Daequan Cook from Dayton (Dunbar) OH and 6'4 Frosh Dave Lighty from Cleveland (St. Joseph) OH both have a chance to be special players. "Cook already has a tremendous feel for the game," say Johnson. "He came in with a big time reputation, but, as a 6'4 point guard, he already understands when to make his teammates better and when to use his incredible talent to just take over the game." Cook already is putting up prolific numbers and he's only going to get bigger and stronger." The only thing holding Lighty back is football. As a matter of fact, Lighty also currently is ranked as the #1 freshman football player in the state, which means that he will likely follow in the footsteps of another former St. Joseph alumnus, Melvin Levitt, although Lighty lacks Levitt's incredible athleticism. However, Lighty is much more skilled than Levitt, which means Lighty's upside is far greater. Instead, 6'2 Frosh Marcus Johnson from Akron (St. Vincent-St Mary's) OH, who has no peers in Ohio in terms of quickenss, athleticism, leaping ability, and pure national talent, may end up more like Levitt, who had a nice college career, but failed to make it at the highest level. However, if Johnson develops a develop a perimeter game and works on his ball handling skills, he could emerge as one of the top players nationally in the Class of 2006, along with Cook and Lighty. Another freshman putting up big numbers is 6'3 Frosh Dejuan Jones from Sideny (H.S.) OH, who is averaging 18 ppg while playing on the varsity. Jones needs to get bigger and stronger, but he's very quick and is an excellent time 3-point shooter. And rounding out the top five freshmen in Ohio is 6'5 Frosh Ricky Jackson from Louisville (St. Thomas Aquinas) OH. This high flying athlete can take it to the hole and rebound well for his size, plus he has excellent ball handling skills. Also worth mentioning is the fact that 6'3 Frosh Chris Poellnitz from Toledo (Scott) OH was ranked by Johnson as one of the top 8th graders in Ohio two years ago, but then moved to Minnesota and repeated the 8th grade a year ago. However, now Poellnitz is back and drawing a lot of comparisions to Cook, because we're talking about another outstanding point guard with size, playmaking ability and court savvy.
  One to watch in the future, according to Mike Duncan, who is the director of the Cleveland Basketball Club, is 5'0 Carl Jones from Warrenville Heights (Brady) OH, who is one of the top 6th graders in the nation!

  Terry Licorish is progressing academically at Notre Dame Prep and is doing well enough to qualify academically next season for D1 play. Still a little work to go. He has not lost his intereest in Auburn and is fond of Cliff Ellis, so Auburn remains involved. Louisville is interested. We have not heard of Cincinnati being involved. Seton Hall and Rutgers are interested, as are Pitt, UMass, and Providence. Those are the ones we have heard. Thank you. - Bullseye

  He played well. He showed the most athleticism out of a big man that I have seen. He has a great outside jump shot and has expanded his game to 3's although I wouldn't advise him to take any. He is dominant when he wants to be. His only problem is that he is very lazy at times. HE'll walk down the court on a fast break or just slack off on some plays. I talked to a scout from toronto when I was watching and he said he didn't think whaley is ready for the nba and wouldn't advise him entering the draft. He said he had the skills and could be a great player, but he doesn't take it serious enough. Coach wolf said he rarely hits the weight room. He has improved much from last year when I saw him though. He has probably lost about 20-30 pounds since I saw him his freshman year at barton which is a very good sign. He looked intimidating and would easily start for cincy right now. He's got great ball handling, and passing skills. He just needs to be more explosive when he goes up in the post. I think Huggins will fix most of these problems though. Lets just hope Whaley is up for the challenge and doesn't quit.

  His team isn't having a great season, but Matt Terwilliger has impressed lots of observers with the numbers he's posted individually.
  
  Terwilliger, a 6-9, 220-pound junior BF/C from Troy (OH) High, is averaging 18 points and 10 boards this season for a team that's struggling to win half its games.
  
  "This year I am trying to be a lot more physical, and go out and take the three," Terwilliger told PrepStars.com. "I'm just powering the ball in, being physical, making strong moves, and watching tapes of myself have helped me decide what I needed to work on as a player."
  
  The addition of more power to his already-polished finesse game has caught the eye of coaches at Cincinnati, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State, Dayton, Xavier and others. It's too early to know in which direction all these schools will go in for the Class of 2004, but Terwilliger hopes that three of his favorites, in particular, will remain in pursuit during the rest of the season.
  
  "Cincinnati, Notre Dame and Ohio State are my top three right now," said Terwiliger. "I will probably decide before my senior season, like maybe right after this season and before AAU stuff gets going.
  
  "(My decision) will be the program, the players and the people that I will play with," Terwiliger said. "The environment of the school and the feel that I have for the coaches also are factors, along with academics, of course."
  
  As for those academics, Terwilliger said that he currently holds a 3.1 GPA. His brains and skills are likely to stay somewhat close to home for college.
  
  "I'm not going very far away from home," he said. "Four to five hours will probably be as far as I go."

  I was reading their scoop of the day for Monday, and they said that UC is in the running (with like every other school) for 6'10" Tella Palacious who is showing a much improved game and leaving a good impression.   I don't expect you to tell us the details but put it this way, is UC going to sign one more for this recruiting class or is it someone for 2004? Are we talking a big man and is it someone we'll all be pleased by? Just give us some clues without telling us. I just want to know if we're making some progress. I really feel like a freshman 6'9 to 6'11 guy coming in that's a top 100 player would solidify this recruiting class and the roster for the next 2 years.........and it would change our recruiting targets for 2004 a bit.   There are a decent number of solid high major prospects available at the power forward position in the Class of 2003, with several possessing the ability to swing out to the perimeter when necessary.
  
  1. Brandon Bass, 6-8 225 lbs. Capital HS in Baton Rouge, LA. Bass stands head and shoulders above the group of power forwards available with his combination of size and agility. He is explosive with the basketball and has the ability to face the basket out on the wing and either use the dribble to get to the hoop or drain mid-range jumpers with equal effectiveness. He has great hands and is strong on the glass at both ends of the floor. Connecticut, Mississippi State, and Alabama are all involved, but ASR predicts that Bass will commit to the hometown LSU Tigers sometime shortly after the holidays.
  
  2. Linas Kleiza, 6-7 235 lbs. Montrose Christian School, Rockville, MD. Kleiza, a native of Lithuania, burst on the scene a little over a year ago at the Charlie Weber Invitational at the University of Maryland, impressing onlookers with his incredible strength and toughness in the paint. He is a warrior on the glass and gets a lot of points on put backs and free throws. His shooting technique is still a work in progress. We love his agressive nature and his willingness to do the dirty work down low. Had a quiet summer, but we feel he could become a smaller version of Oklahoma freshman Kevin Bookout down the road. Missouri is the perceived leader for his services, but Florida State, Connecticut, North Carolina State, and Virginia are also in the mix.
  
  3. Lawrence Carrier, 6-9 225 lbs. Salisbury School, Salisbury, CT. Carrier has the potential to be the best of this group. He suffered a broken ankle last year, but now appears to be healthy, in shape, and ready to wreak havoc on the New England prep scene. He opened the season in the Thomas Blackburn Tournament with a 23 point and 24 rebound effort against the powerful host school, Worcester Academy and followed that with a 28 point 16 rebound performance against Governor Drummer Academy in the consolation game. Through six games he is averaging 23.2 points and 12.2 rebounds. The California native is a terrific inside/outside player who has really improved his strength over the past year and a half. Miami (FL), Connecticut, and USC are among the schools taking a look. Look for more to join the list in the near future.
  
  4. Jason Cain, 6-9 205 lbs. John Bartram HS, Philadelphia, PA. As Jason continues to get stronger his stock rises dramatically. Already skilled with the ball facing up and active patrolling the lane and blocking shots, his downfall has been his inability to hold his position in the low blocks and finish plays against physical defenders. There was talk of him spending a year at prep school to improve this area of his game, but he has made strides in the last couple of months and it looks like he'll be a spring signee. Drexel, Penn State, UNC Greensboro, Cleveland State, and Western Kentucky are among the schools who've shown the most interest to date, although several Big East schools are also keeping tabs on his progress.
  
  5. Patrick Ewing, Jr., 6-7 205 lbs. National Christian Academy, Fort Washington, MD. Ewing, the son of NBA great Patrick Ewing, Sr., has struggled at times with his tweener status on the floor. He thrives at the defensive end of the floor where he challenges shots and is active on the glass. He also does well in an uptempo setting where he can fill the lanes on the break and finish with authority. He seems to have trouble in the half court due to the fact that he doesn't yet have a reliable jumper, nor does he have the size or footwork to make plays in the paint. We love his athletic ability, but we think teams are taking a wait and see approach as his skills continue to develop. He's got an offer from Georgetown, and Indiana, Memphis, Louisville, and Texas are also involved.

  Funny how one game can change everything. A thread below was arguing whether Nick Williams or Chadd Moore will start next year. Well, I think it's Chadd's job to lose now since he'll be the one with a year of experience in Huggs system. Nick will be a valuable backup, but Moore showed me alot. I know that Nick is a very good 3 point shooter.....and possibly, next year's lineup could be so diverse that Nick could actually play some SF if needed. We could possibly be playing like a 3 guard lineup at times or go big. The point is......with all this talent.....DOES IT REALLY MATTER? Look at the damn rotation next year:
  
  PG Moore, N. Williams, J. Lucas
  SG F. Williams, T. Bobbitt, N. Williams, Kirkland, White
  SF White, Kirkland, N. Williams, T. Bobbitt
  PF Maxiell, Hicks, Pilgrim
  C Whaley, Hollman (if back), KJohnson, ? possible recruit like Alexander Johnson, and Flowers
  
  I mean, other than Flowers, John Meeker, and Pilgrim.....I see everyone else in the rotation. If Hollman doesn't get another year, then maybe Rod plays out of necessity.
  
  Does it really matter if it's Chadd or Nick? Even Jamal will have needed experience this year. Does it matter who's at SG? They all have their strongpoints.....play the guy who's hot or fills the need at the time.
  
  The great thing is. NO DAYS OFF FOR ANYONE IF THEY WANT TO PLAY. Because the guy right behind you can easily take your place if you don't work and play hard. COMPETITION IS A GOOD THING.
  
  Moore and Hicks have me even more excited about next year!
  
  We need Alexander Johnson to complete this 2003 class.....because we need a solid backup for Whaley in 2004 if he returns.
  
  The offense next year with Moore at PG is going to be unreal. After one "coming-out" game (Chattanooga), I am already predicting a top 10 ranking preseason and top 5 for most of the year next year.

  Slow day at work. It's obvious from our projected lineup the this year and next that our biggest need is the Center position. I have no clue what the UC coaches are thinking. We have one more available scholarship for 2003 if we choose to use it. We have 4 available between 2003 and 2004 and Jamar Butler has used one of those, which leaves 3 available scholarships for the next 2 recruiting classes. Big man, Big man, Big man! But who? According to Hoop Scoop, these are the only available big men left in the 2003 class:

  #11 Brandon Bass 6'8" (Louisiana) - hasn't committed but we all know he's going to LSU....and besides he's a power forward. The guy has yanked UC's chain forever.
  
  #63 Darryl Watkins 6'11" (New Jersey) - looking strongly at the Big East schools, Maryland, and North Carolina. I believe North Carolina is strapped on scholarships, though. All have offered but UNC. I read on Bob Gibbons that he's still open to new schools. May have grade problems.
  
  #92 Nick Stiggers 6'7" (according to Blue Chips), 6'9" according to Hoop Scoop. He had moved to California but has moved back to his home state of Tennessee to finish his senior year. He's like 245 lbs. and all muscle. A Danny Fortsen power type player. Blue Chips lists UC as offering him a scholarship.
  
  2003 - Prep School players (5th year)
  
  #3 James Lang 6'10" 300 lbs. - has verballed to Louisville, but didn't sign his letter of intent yet.
  
  #8 Alexander Johnson 6'10" 240 lbs. - UC is listed as his leader, but who knows.
  
  #24 Lawrence Carrier 6'8" 190 lbs. - lists Michigan and Miami (Fla.) as his leaders
  
  #46 Femi Ibikunle 6'10" - listed as already being offered by Memphis, St. John's, and UC. Being heavily recruited by Louisville, North Carolina, Villanova, and Iowa State. Currently attending Prep School in New Hampshire.
  
  Those are the 7 remaining highly rated big men (some not so big) that are available. It appears that for guys 6'10" or taller that UC is recruiting Alexander Johnson and Femi Ibikunle. Watkins is a possibility if he truly is "open". Stiggers depends on whether he is truly 6'9" or only 6'7". Technically, Johnson, Ibikunle, and Stigger are the only ones listed as being recruited by UC.

  6'5" Jamelle Cornelly - currently plays at Columbus Brookhaven with Andrew Lavender and Ivan Harris. Only a soph. Considered the consensus #1 soph in Ohio and ranked by Hoop Scoop as the #15 ranked soph in the country. I don't know much about him.
  
  6'2" Travis Walton (PG) - out of Lima (OH) - suppose to be super quick and a great defender. Ranked as the #2 soph in Ohio behind Cornelly.
  
  6'8" Ross Morin (C) - plays at Cincinnati Princeton. Suppose to be pretty good. Any info on him would be appreciated. Ranked as the #3 soph in Ohio by Hoop.

  6'6" Aaron Pogue out of Dayton.
  6'8" Kirk Huelsman out of some backwoods country town.

  Nick may be better, Chadd may be. Both have ample advantages/disadvantages as far as getting next year's starting spot. Nick: one year starting PG on a Big 12 team, Chadd: one year in Huggs' practices and knowledge of the system.
  
  I'm not knowlegeable enough to form an opinion, but, I'll say this: How often in recent Bearcat history have we had TWO competent candidates at PG? With that level of competition between the two, it will only help them both. I'm sure both will see significant minutes.
  
  As far as Chadd bolting, I highly doubt it. Everything he has recently said points to his buying into Huggins' way, plus, as a highly placed source says about it - and it's on the net, not someone I know - Chadd's going to be getting some minutes soon.

Logan is responsible for doing the program and making himself better. Huggs is responsible for creating the program that works if you do it. As MJ says, just do it.   To be honest, I don't think this is the right team for james White. UC has'nt ran in years and do we really need someone who don't shoot very well? We need someone who can drive to the basket and draw defenders. He does'nt drive or shoot well enough to waste a schooly on him imo just because he brings name recognition. Let him go to Mizzu. BTW did you guys check out clemmons? Are we getting the wrong players? I know I would have rather got Cam Stephens over JD. The verdict is still out on Clems and Bobbitt. But he would be more valueable as a stopper than trying to be instant offense.

  After the 2nd game of the year he is questioning whether we should of gotten Bobbit. BRILLIANT. Also says that we shouldn't get James White because he doesn't take it to the whole.   He is constantly questioning Huggins. Huggs isn't right on every player but he is right enough of the times and has been successful enough not to get 2nd guessed all the time from a so called "UC Fan" who thinks he knows it all because he runs open gym in Dayton.
  
  I hate to bring negativity to the forum but I am tired of BearcatB thinking he is an expert and that if anybody disagrees with him they do it b/c they worship KB. KB should of disagreed about Nick Williams in a tactful way.

  Chadd Moore will start next year. All this about Nick Williams coming in and running the show is rediculous. Unless Nick is a Ricky Clemmons of Mizzou, I believe it will be Chadd's job to lose. He's going to be a stud next year, just wait. I see the lineup being Moore, Bobbit, Kirkland, Max, Whaley.
  Field loses his job next year because of his lack of penetration. If he develops it, he will start, and Bobbit will play the 3.
  Why will Nick Williams start? Juco point guards don't always pan out. K-State and Cincinnati are two different worlds. My fear is that Chadd's going to transfer because of lack of playing time. Anybody on the inside know if he is unhappy with his current situation?

  I'm a proud Princeton high school graduate and noticed that Princeton beat Troy 61 to 39 last night. Terwilliger had only 6 points while Princeton's 6-7 soph center Ross Morin had 12 points and 11 rebounds. I didn't see the game but have seen Princeton play and they are very athletic and very good. Troy's record is only 2-6 so far this year. Just wondering that if Terwilliger is 6-10 and division 1 material why are they struggling so much. I also would think that Terwilliger would have more than 6 points. One other question, I saw in the box score a kid named Hall had 22 pts for Troy. Is he any relation to Brooks Hall?

  Rodney Epperson.... 14 games-14 games started, 27.0 minutes per game, 76-162 FG's, 47% FG, 25-57 three pointers, 44% three pointers, 22-32 FT's, 69% FT, 4.6 rebounds per game, 14.5 ppg
  
  What I like about this guy is his heighth, 6'8" and the fact that he can nail the 3 pointer, 44%, but he doesn't just sit at the 3 point line as evidenced by his 162 FG attempts of which only 57 are three point attempts. Plus, he's shooting 47% on FG's in addition to 44% on 3 pointers. Decent FT shooter, 69%. If anyone has seen him play, is he worthy of a Division 1 scholarship? I have heard we're recruiting him, but nothing solid.
  
  UC has some tough choices to make. We need another big man in the worst way......someone like an Alexander Johnson (6'10"), Darryl Watkins (6'11"), Jermaine Bell (6'10"), Guy Ngarndi (6'8") or even Matt Terwilliger (6'10"). We could even use a couple of them. The problem is.....there are a few other good prospects out there like Norm Plummer and this Epperson kid. As someone posted below.....could you imagine this lineup:

  It won't work unless they return to the 5/9 rule. This scenario has 9 scholarships between 2003-2004.....we can only give 8. The reason that rule sucks is what if Maxiell, Whaley and White all go pro after next year and we've signed 5 this season and can only sign 3 for 2004? Then you'd only have 10 scholarship players in 2004-2005 (this scenario)......look below:

  That's your possible lineup if Whaley, Maxiell, and White would go pro after next season. And you'd really only have 9 scholarship players because you can only sign 8 between the 2003 and 2004 classes. So, you'd either sign Epperson OR Plummer, not both. Then add those 3 guys back in there and think how good that team will be. Because really, if they go pro.......you still have a decent team.
  
  It's fun playing with these scenarios. But this really shows you how stupid the 5/8 rule is. There are teams out there like North Carolina or Duke that could lose 2 to 3 players a year to the NBA. UC will be in this situation next year. It really isn't fair. The 5/9 rule helps alot.....they should return to it. Then we could sign both Epperson, Plummer, Terwilliger, and Butler for next year and be done with it. Plummer has said he'd love to come home and play (hint hint). Terwilliger has sat on UC's bench a couple of times......he wants to come here. I'm sure with Huggs contacts at Barton and the fact that Epperson has listed UC in his top 3 that we could get him. But I still want Alexander Johnson this year, also. I'm greedy.

  I say go after Norm Plummer with the last scholarship. And I guess that means we don't take Terwilliger. Or should we take Terwilliger over a Jermaine Bell-type player?

  As usual, Clark Francis has Louisville's recruits a bit overrated.....he's such a homer. I haven't seen their recruits rated as highly as he has them, on other recruiting services. As for Memphis, if you haven't heard, Kendrick Perkins is putting up MONSTER STATS and is almost guaranteed to go pro out of high school.......I've read that by most services......he appears to be as advertised, so Memphis will have one good recruit so far in Sean Banks. UC's doesn't count James White because he's a transfer.....so there's is really even better. If they get an Alexander or Watkins.....they surely move to #1. I think DePaul's class is better than he has hit rated. I know Mejia, Smith, and Wesley Green are all suppose to be pretty good players that were highly recruited. UAB got the highly rated Taylor brothers....which was a steal. Charlotte has Iti, and I haven't read much about him so far since B-ball season started......he was rumored to be wanting to go pro straight out of prep school......but no flashy news about him makes me think he's been ordinary so far.....so I'm sure he goes to Charlotte for atleast a year.....but we all know what freshmen do. I've read several good stories about Dameon Mason, Marquette's prize recruit......he's been lighting it up so far in high school. If you look at the average talent rating per school.....you can see that after UC, Louisville, and Memphis, only UAB and Charlotte are really getting some quality players. Geez, I've never heard of any of Houston's recruits....all from Texas.

  Brewster Academy's Boys' Varsity "A" basketball team rolled to a 105-65 win over Trinity High School. Brewster was led by Norman Plummer (Fairfield, Ohio), a 6'7 210lb. junior with 40 points. Plummer is averaging 32 points per game during 6 games in the past week. Cincinnati-bound Mike Pilgrim (Cincinnati, Ohio) added 20 points in the victory, most of which of the spectacular dunk variety. Postgraduates Frank Gilroy (North Bellmore, N.Y.) and Ivan Kostic (Madrid, Spain) both chipped in 10 points in the victory. Luke Bonner, a 6'11 junior led Trinity with 14 points.
  
  Brewster 121, Notre Dame Prep 115 OT (December 15)
  
  Brewster captured the Brewster Classic by defeating Notre Dame Prep in a 121-115 overtime thriller. Brewster was led by junior Norman Plummer (Fairfield, Ohio) with 38 points. Brewster had a balanced attack with Blake Schilb (Rantoul, Illinois) adding 19 points, 10 rebounds, and 8 assists, and Mike Pilgrim (Cincinnati) chipping in with 18. Juniors Deion James (Milwaukee) and Joel Smith (Lompoc, California) both scored 14 points in the victory. David Gale (Sherman Oaks, California) was outstanding down the stretch for Brewster. Norman Plummer (Fairfield, Ohio) led five Brewster players in double figures with 31 points. Mike Pilgrim (Cincinnati, Ohio) chipped in 20 points, most of which were of the spectacular dunk variety. Tom Novick (Charlotte, North Carolina) and Ivan Kostic (Madrid, Spain) both added 12 points for Brewster. Joel Smith (Lompoc, California) also reached double figures by dumping in 10 points. All 10 Brewster players scored in the victory. Proctor was led by Evan Meekins with 22 points.
  
  Brewster 118, Tilton 77 (December 11)
  
  The Varsity "A" Boys Basketball team defeated Tilton 118-77. Brewster was led by Norman Plummer (Fairfield, Ohio) with 34 points. Joel Smith (Lompoc, California) and Blake Schilb (Rantoul, Illinois) both added 16 points in the victory. Ivan Kostic (Madrid, Spain) helped the cause with 13 points and 7 rebounds. David Gale (Sherman Oaks, California) also reached double figures with 12 points, including two 3-pointers. Brandon White led Tilton School with 21 points, all of which came on 3-point field goals.
  
  Brewster hosts Proctor Academy on Friday at 6 p.m. in the opening game of the Brewster Invitational. New Hampton School is slated to play Naval Prep at 8 p.m. in the other first round game.
  
  Brewster 88, Maine Central Institute 79 (December 8)
  
  Brewster played host Maine Central Institute in the consolation game. Brewster defeated MCI 88-79. Brewster had five players reach double figures led by All Tournament selection Deion James (Milwaukee) with 22 points. Blake Schilb (Rantoul, Illinois) played a great all-around game by adding 20 points 8 rebounds, and 6 assists. Norman Plummer (Fairfield, Ohio) added 18 points and 7 rebounds for the Bobcats. Joel Smith (Lompoc, California) and Mike Pilgrim (Cincinnati) both added 12 points to the victory.
  
  Brewster 78, Winchendon School 98 (December 7)
  
  Brewster traveled to Pittsfield, Maine, to play a very talented Winchendon School team in the first game of the MCI Invitational. Winchendon jumped out to a commanding lead and the Bobcats were never able to recover. Winchendon won 98-78. Deion James (Milwaukee) was the lone bright spot for Brewster. James scored 20 points, including 18 in the second half. Norman Plummer (Fairfield, Ohio) chipped in 17 points in the loss.
  
  Brewster 100, Thayer 66 (December 6)

Thayer was led by Jamaal Dixon with 21 and Maryland-bound Mike Jones with 20.

  The Boys Varsity "A" Basketball team won their home opener on Wednesday by defeating Redemption Christian Academy (NY) 72-59. Mike Pilgrim (Cincinnati, Ohio) led Brewster with 17 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 blocks. Blake Schilb (Rantoul, Illinois) played a solid all-around game and added 14 points for the Bobcats. Norman Plummer (Fairfield, Ohio) and David Gale (Sherman Oaks, California) both chipped in 12 points. Gale's coming on four 3-pointers. Joel Smith (Lompoc, California) also reached double figures in scoring with 10 points.
  
  Brewster hosts Thayer Academy (Massachusetts) on Friday at 6:30 p.m. Brewster travels to Pittsfield,Maine, this weekend to participate in the Maine Central Institute Invitational Tournament on Saturday and Sunday. Brewster meets Winchendon School (Massachusetts) on Saturday at 8 p.m.

  It is hard not to notice Aaron Agnew on the floor during his games. At 6-10 and 360 pounds, his presence is undeniable, but don't make the mistake of jumping to any conclusions about him -- he is a skilled player.
  
  The junior from Bellaire (OH) is averaging 19 points, 16 boards this year through his first three games after ringing up 18 points and 12 boards and 8 blocks last year as a sophomore.
  
  Building upon last year's success and achieving some individual goals are mindful objectives this year for Agnew.
  
  "I want to lead my team this year and go real far during the post season," Agnew told PrepStars.com. "For me individually, I want to get my weight down a little, play hard every game, and get better movement."
  
  The fine footwork he demonstrated in the low post during the spring and summer was surprising, as he was pushing 375 pounds. That footwork, combined with his size and a good set of hands make Agnew a naturally gifted low post player that will entice more than a few colleges.
  
  Agnew is hearing most from Xavier, Cincinnati, Michigan State, Tennessee, West Virginia and Pittsburgh. Agnew claims to have offers early from Xavier, where he has already taken and unofficial visit, and Cincinnati. While his decision is in the future, Agnew is looking at several factors.
  
  "For me I want to see how good the coaching staff is when I decide," said Agnew. "How they make me feel and location will be important for my mom as will playing time."
  
  "I feel that I can step out and help teams and play a little from a forward position and have been working on my offensive skills, so that I can get more movement."
  
  Agnew is also an accomplished shot and discus thrower in high school for his track team, and with a 2.7 GPA, he is well on the way to establishing solid academic footing.

  Two friends and I attended last night's Jimmy V Classic and what a night it was to be a Bearcat fan. Since I live in New Jersey the 'Cats don't often come to NJ to play so I leapt at the opportunity to see them live while also taping the game. For those interested, you can see me right after Dick Vitale finishes his halftime speech as one of the young fans clapping at the conclusion of the speech wearing a UC hat. I had front row seats behind the basket the Cats were shooting at in the second half, right behind the UC cheerleaders. Some notes from seeing the game in person. Every UC player on the floor played with tremendous confidence and defensively we played as solid as I've seen all season. They had maybe one offensive rebound the whole first half. Taron looked aggressive going to the hoop when he needed to and hit some clutch shots with the shot clock winding down. Max played hard the whole game and his alley oop defied the laws of physics, the crowd (more Oregon fans than UC fans) all stood up in awe after that one. When Bobbit came in he looked confident and shot looked pure. Field had a few looks but Ridnour was guarding him behind the 3 point line and he didn't get many good looks. Johnson was active, boarded well and though he had 4 fouls he played hard. Stokes scored in every conceiveable way, 3 pointer, spinning jumper, put back slam off a missed shot, alley oop lay up, he was consistent and didn't force anything. The critical part was Barker and Stokes locking up the Luke and Luke show. Both ran through screens well and gave them no easy looks. Barker picked up Ridnour at half court and didn't let him run or get good looks. Going in I knew we'd at least have our two best defensive players on their best two offensive players. On a sidenote, I told one of my friends on the ride there that Kenyon would show up and low and behold he did with 10 minutes to go in the game, I was about 15 feet away from him and he walked right past me and stood by the UC bench and got a big ovation from the entire crowd that remained for the entire game. All in all I came away impressed and pumped that with Bobbit finding his stroke and if Field can find his to go with Stokes and Barker being solid we'll have another good year...

  WOLFEBORO, N.H. - Brewster Academy coach Jason Smith has a fistful of Division I prospects stowed away up here on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee. But the most impressive so far this season? A little-known junior from Ohio.
  
  
  Yet Another Impressive Weekend
  
  After playing center for his high school team back in the Cincinnati suburb of Fairfield - and then exhausting his eligibility following his junior season - SF/PF Norm Plummer is now at Brewster trying to improve his perimeter skills and boost his overall stock.
  
  The early results?
  
  "He's exceeded all my expectations," Smith said this weekend. "He had never left the paint before he got here. Now he can step out and knock down the three. He's got a chance to play at the highest level."
  
  His stats have been impressive. How impressive? Try six-games-over-30-points impressive. But the 6-7, 208-pounder still is doing most of his damage around the basket, where he's a relentless offensive rebounder as well as an effective finisher.
  
  Plummer capped a super weekend Sunday afternoon in scoring an even 30 in leading Brewster to a 121-114 overtime win over Fitchburg (MA) Notre Dame Prep in the Brewster Classic final.
  
  He also scored an aggregate 56 points in two games in the Friday-Saturday Brewster Invitational. Then he went for 27 Saturday night against Braintree (MA) Thayer in the opening round of the Brewster Classic.
  
  Total tally for the weekend? Three days, four games, 113 points - and, oh yes, one tourney title. Not bad. Especially for a kid who three months ago wasn't so hot on his New Hampshire digs.
  
  "When I first got here, I hated it," Plummer said. "We're in the middle of nowhere out here. But it's OK now. It's the best decision I've ever made because it's going to give me more opportunities."
  
  Showing the most interest right now are Wyoming, Iowa State, Ohio State, Providence and Duquesne. Some MAC schools that were recruiting him already last year - Miami, Ohio, Toledo and Butler - are still keeping tabs.
  
  "It'd be nice to go back home," Plummer said. "But I'll go anywhere I can play basketball."

I'd be remiss if I didn't mention other instant impact Junior College guys like Jimmy Hubbard, Antwan Jones, Brian Bland(remember him?), Marvin Dixon(Come on you've got to remember this spring 97 signee!), Shawn Myrick, Jermaine Thomas, Marcus Moss, Rod Monroe, Vince Barnett, and Mike Reichenecker!
  The instant impact these guys gave to the program leave me feeling supremely confident that Nick Williams and Robert Whaley will probably have already locked up the Wooden Award for Player of the year by this time next year!

  On Friday evening we confirmed that 6'7 James White, who is transferring from the University of Florida, had the University of Cincinnati over Missouri and Syracuse. Obviously this is big for Bearcats head coach Bobby Huggins, as he continues to stockpile players in this recruiting class who have a little more maturity and experience than the normal high school player. If you will recall, earlier this fall Cincinnti landed 6'10 Robert Whaley from Barton County (JC) KS and 6'4 Nick Williams from Chipola (JC) FL, both of whom are consensus top five junior college players in the nation, and 6'8 Mike Pilgrim, who originally is Cincinnati, OH, but who is now a 5th year player at Wolfeboro (Brewster Academy) ME. Speaking of Pilgrim, rumor has it that he's not thrilled about the fact the Bearcats have already recruited over him, but he shouldn't be too worried about White transferring to Cincinnati for several reasons. First, competition is good and, if Pilgrim has somebody like White to go head-to-head against everyday in practice for the next four years, they'll be turn out to be better players. Second, Huggins is at his best when he has a number of players who are versatile enough to play several different positions and, as a result, are interchangeable. Third, White is more of a wing forward/second guard and Pilgrim is more of a wing forward/power forward, so they should be on the court a lot at the same time. White counts towards the five scholarships that Cincinnati has available, for our purposes he does not count towards Cincinnati's recruiting class. Remember, it is our editorial policy not to count transfers when ranking recruiting classes. As a matter of fact, Cincinnati's recruiting class will drop from #5 to #13 in our Final Ranking of the Top Recruiting Classes for the Fall Signing Period. If you will recall, Pilgrim did not play well two weeks ago when we saw him at the War on the Shore National Prep School Invitational and, as a result, we've dropped him in our rankings. In other words, he's gone from being the equivalent of a player in the 11-40 range nationally to a player in the 71-100 nationally, if he were still a high school senior. However, if White were to count, Cincinnati would have the #1-ranked recruiting class nationally.

  The only thing I can come up with is that the previous year we only brought in Barker, Maxiell, and Hollman. That makes 8 over that 2 year period. Maybe the rule resets itself and we're now on a new 2 year period.....and if we bring in 5 this year, we can only bring in 4 next year? Is that it?   Looks like Plummer is leading the team at scoring at around 24 pt's a game for the season and is outplaying 2003 players like Maryland recruit Mike Jones over the weekend.Might be UC will end up with a Cincinnati kid in the 2004 class? Definetly deserves consideration

  Seriously. I still think they have the talent to get it done. The need some offensive structure. I honestly think with some work on offense this team could outscore people.
  
  I love the defense, but have always felt Huggs didn't push the offense enough. He says they're the worst passing team he's had? They've all been kinda lousy passing teams, haven't they?
  
  This team was built with scorers, and the cream always rises to the top.
