  Just because you don't get high school kids....doesn't mean it's a bad class.
  
  Think about it.
  
  Whaley is the number one Center if not player in all of JUCO. He's coming to Cincy because he wants to be pushed to get stronger and better......good attitude.....improving, already very talented player.
  
  Nick Williams......on the lists I've seen, he's either the number one or two PG in all of JUCO. He started for K-State as a freshman and had some pretty decent freshman numbers. Good recruit.
  
  Jeff Varem.......on the lists I've seen, he's considered the number one or two SF in all of JUCO. He's suppose to be a Maxiell type on the boards. Gets alot of rebounds considering he's not as tall as most. Great leaping ability and aggressive nature. Huggs has learned from Little and Grove that heighth doesn't necessarily mean rebounds.....we got more rebounds out of Erik Martin at 6'5" than we did Little. Same goes for Maxiell. Danny Fortson couldn't jump, but had a knack for rebounds at only 6'7". Rebounding is determination and leaping ability....that's all.

  I heard during this upcoming season that UC will be focusing on a few more big men (centers) that have not committed yet and appear wide open for the class of 2003. They are interested in the development of these players and have made some intial contact:
  
  7'4" Ronnie Norman out of Houston, TX. 240 lbs.
  
  6'11" Jaaron Greene out of Mt. Zion Academny, NC, 280 lbs.
  
  6'9" Wesley Green, 285 lbs. Also being recruited by DePaul and Marquette.

  Varem sounds intriguing...not necessarily a 3pt shooting SF, but sounds like a driving, finishing, rebounding beast. Has anyone found or heard anything further on him and UC?
  
  I still wouldn't mind seeing Minor here. The plus is he is qualified from what I have read. Minus is will he hurt chemistry? Don't think that would happen with Field here his first year. Other minus is would he affect Butler commitment or chances of Jason Rich?
  
  I know the national experts don't list UC as a possible for Wafer, but is UC trying here and will he qualify.
  
  I don't see Bass coming.
  
  By the way, I like Williams and Whaley commitments.

  I got an E-mail today suggesting Huggs & Co. are looking for a SF (either Bass, a JUCO, or some other High School top player) and another PF for depth and the future.
  
  I'm not saying we won't take Minor. It just doesn't make sense. It only makes sense if Bass and Minor are a package like Lavender and Foust. If so, get them both.
  
  But like Wafer going to Charlotte and sitting behind alot of talent at his position......so would Minor. We are loaded with guards in the next several years and then Jamar Butler comes in.
  
  My source thinks, as usual, that UC will surprise with someone not mentioned yet. I think UC has moved on. They will shoot for Bass and Minor on their visit and if they can't get a commitment......they will move on at that point.

  Saw BJ Grove in Krogers yesterday. One might think that isn't a good sign, but he is slimmer than in the past. While it is difficult to determine how good a shape he is in just by looking at him in street clothes, I can say he looked better than at the beginning of basketball last year.
  
  If I had to guess his weight (and I mean guess) I would say he is in the 270-280 weight range. I think that is good news. As long as he gets in decent shape prior to the season, I think there is the possibility that he can contribute with Huggs in season conditioning.

  You have done a great job with the board and the problems with the board have nothing to do with you but the all the negative posters. Any chance of going to a password like some of the other boards have gone to get rid of all the negative posts and posters trashing others posts and getting in too a pissing match of who is right and who knows more? A few posters have consistently ruined the board with all their constant bickering and negative posts. Thanks for trying to clean up the board by continuing to ask for the bickering and attacks to stop but the only way some of the posters are going to get it is if they get a password and they lose it if they continue with their negative posts and attacks on others.   Lance had Whaley's Juco coach on for a few minutes.He said he feels 100% that Whaley will be a Bearcat next year and it wouldn't surprise him if he stayed 2 years because Whaley wants to be a top 15 pick.His opinion was Whaley is not ready for the Nba because he needs to work on his body by getting stronger and take his game to the next level which is D-1.His coach said he wants to play for Huggs because he knows Huggs will make him work hard and get him ready for the next level and he really likes Andy Kennedy who did his recruitment.Also one of the reasons he chose UC was he was really impressed with their strength and conditioning programs.Lance asked him if he saw any problems playing for a fiery coach like Huggs and his coach said not at all that Whaley wants to play for a coach like that.His coach said that Robert does everything well and he's a scorer who can score from all the way out to the 3 point line.He said that the only thing he needs to do is get better at rebounding and get stronger.Also stated that there have been no problems,that he is a very hard worker and that he is really focused right now.His problems are in the past and he has moved on but has learned from his prior situations.Sounds like a guy that deserves a chance.Hopefully he has learned enough to stay out of situations that could get him in trouble unlike Donald Little.

  Which begs some questions:
  We have 2 scholarships still available for 2003. What positions do you fill?
  If Tack and Bass want to come here as a package do you take both? Definitely. That's you're final two scholarships. What if Bass wants to come and Tack is undecided and goes elsewhere........super.....that's what really needs to happen because we need the final scholarship for another big man.
  What big men are available? Brandon Bender? If he wants to come here........super. We really need a SF, PF, and or Center to complete this class. We really don't need anymore guards.
  
  Which brings me to my next question. Why are we recruiting Bright and Rich....aren't they both guards? We don't seem to need guards for several seasons at this point. Geez, if Tack comes here.....we'll have 5 PG's in our lineup....talk about versatility.......N. Williams, Chadd Moore, Jamar Butler, Tack Minor, and Armein Kirkland (played PG in high school).
  
  We need Bass and Bender. Next year we need Terwilliger and some other big men and or SF's or PF's. I see a serious need at this position especially with Whaley and Maxiell candidates for early entry into the NBA.

  And then we get Whaley. With Whaley, Bass, Maxiell, and Hicks in the post, along with Flowers, K.Johnson......UC should be strong enough. Minor, you say? The kid can flat out play, but he needs to harness his talent and add his brain. They say no one can guard Tack....for the most part. If he wants to come here.....then we take him. I think he's running out of options......seems to be happening for alot of top players. The top programs are filling their scholarships, which leaves teams like UC with still a chance. I think you can get away with a small SG in college if need be. Maybe we make him like an assasin....that can penetrate and score and just wreak havoc! He doesn't need to play the point to be effective....we can leave that to someone else.
  
  I'm still interested in Bender. In fact, I really wanted Nick Williams, Robert Whaley, Brandon Bender, and Brandon Bass to be our recruiting class. That covers all 4 positions because Williams is a combo guard SG/PG. Add that to this year's class of Kirkland SF, Moore PG, Bobbitt SG, K. Johnson C, Hicks PF........you have all positions covered in 2 consecutive years....unlike alot of our competitors that have overcrowding at positions, namely Charlotte.
  
  2004 will bring another PG (Butler), C Terwilliger, and most likely a PF to replace Maxiell. We will also need some more guards at this time.
  
  I want Bass really bad. He is a Cincinnati type player. Hardnosed, strong, wants to be the best.......I love those kind of players.

  Brandon Foust, a 6-6, 185 pound small forward from Brookhaven H.S. in Columbus, Ohio, will join his teammate Andrew Lavender at Oklahoma, according to his AAU coach Bruce Howard. "They both committed tonight," Howard said. "It's a great get for Oklahoma. Both are going to be very good college basketball players."
  
  Both Foust and Lavender took visits to Oklahoma this past weekend. Foust also considered Pittsburgh.
  
  Foust is a terrific leaper who is a consistent threat on the offensive glass. He finishes strong with great precision. And he and Lavender will go as a package deal to the Sooners.
  
  As a junior at Brookhaven, Foust averaged 12 points, eight rebounds and three blocks per game.

  I can't tell you how worried I am that UC has lost it's bid for the best player in the JC ranks and their best chance of shoring up their low post problems of late. My experience as a fan who follows this stuff is that kids either commit immediately following their visit (e.g. Nick Williams) or don't commit at all (e.g. Karron Clarke). The chances take a huge statistical plunge after no commitment is given after one week following a visit. The kids obviously go back home and have time and space to pursue other interests, while their UC visit becomes an ancient memory in their basketball experience. I just hope Andy Kennedy and Keith LeGree are still all over this kid. I also hope they are on top of Brandon Bender. Players with this size and this ability do not grow on trees.

  Atlanta Hawks forward DerMarr Johnson suffered serious head trauma after a vehicle he was in hit a tree this morning, said a spokeswoman for the Fulton County Police Department.
  
  The accident occurred at around 5 a.m. today. It is not known whether Johnson was a passenger or the driver of the car. The vehicle, a newer model Mercedes, was going west on Cascade Road just west of Fairburn Road when it crossed the center line and ran into a tree, said Maj. Wenda Phifer, spokeswoman for the Fulton County Police Department.
  
  A witness in a passing car, Ali Laila, told police she saw the car in flames and three individuals lying on the ground. She helped them and took them to get medical assistance. The car was "completely destroyed," Phifer said.

  Johnson was transferred from Southwest Hospital to Grady Memorial Hospital, according to a Grady spokeswoman. His condition was not immediately known.
  
  The other two men in the car were Floyd Williams and James Richard Burnett, Phifer said. One suffered serious internal injuries, she said. The other received non-threatening injuries.
  
  Johnson, 22, was a first-round pick of the Hawks in 2000, the sixth choice overall even though he played just one year of college basketball at Cincinnati. He played little his rookie year but began to get more playing time later in his second pro season. A 6-9 small forward, he started 46 games last year and averaged 8.4 points a game. As a rookie, Johnson started 21 games and averaged 5.1 point.
  
  Johnson, who has been focusing on upper body strength during the off-season had just attended a three-day voluntary workout that went Tuesday through Thursday. Official training camp opens Oct. 1.
  
  Hawks spokesman Jon Steinberg said the opening day's starting roster is determined in training camp but, ÒOn paper, he was slated to be the starter at shooting guard.Ó

  "For almost two years now, the name LeBron James has been linked exclusively with Ohio High School Basketball. So much as to sometimes seemingly lessen the abilities and notoriety of other top players. For example, the top senior in Ohio, 6'1 Chris Quinn from Dublin (Coffman) OH, has been underrated nationally by other recruiting services for that very reason, plus he also missed last summer with injuries. Perhaps those most acutely affected by Lebronmania are the #2, #3, and #4-ranked players in the 2003 Class - 6'9 Jr Ivan Harris from Springfield (South) OH and the dynamic duo of 5'9 Jr Andrew Lavender and 6'7 Jr Brandon Foust of Columbus (Brookhaven) OH, all of whom are ranked among the top 100 juniors nationally. In fact, Lavender and Foust, also a dynamic duo in AAU ball with All-Ohio Red, are talking about attending college together as a package. Oklahoma, Seton Hall, and Mississippi were the top schools last week, but Oklahoma recently received a commitment from 6'2 Jr Lawrence McKenzie from Minneapolis (Patrick Henry) MN, thus eliminating the Sooners. My gut feeling is that Seton Hall will be the winner, partly because the Pirates have been there the longest, but also head coach Louis Orr and assistant coach George Jackson are Ohio natives. Harris, who verbally committed to Ohio State last fall, cemented his #2 ranking with a dazzling performance at the USA Olympic Basketball Festival this past week, finishing third in scoring and second in rebounding. While James has been the subject of numerous and sometimes incredible rumors about his plans for his senior year of high school and/or whether he was turning pro - either NBA or Europe, it appears that Harris will be the one who transfers. Harris and his family are going to visit Mouth of Wilson (Oak Hill) VA on Tuesday and Wednesday, July 2nd & 3rd, and I expect he will commit to the Warriors. Meanwhile, the James show will continue at St. Vincent-St. Mary and LeBron will be the first pick in the 2003 NBA Draft next June.
  Most of the top juniors (2003) have remained where they were in November, but one player has made a quantum leep this year. This actually happened during the spring when college coaches were not allowed the evaluate in Ohio, or 47 other states for that matter. His name is Nathan Peavy and he is a 6'7 power forward from Dayton (Chaminade-Julienne) OH who quickly shot up the charts with impressive play against the powerful and talented Michigan Hurricanes the first week in April. I credit Peavy's rise due to the fact that he gave up track and field this spring and switched to Mike Price's Cincinnati AAU program. As I have stated previously, no AAU coach get's more out of his players and does a better job of coaching than Price.
  Before I move onto the Classes of 2004, 2005, and 2006, I want to touch up some player movements. Alex Carmona, a native of Puerto Rico who had committed to Dayton, moved back to his homeland after being declared ineligible last fall by the Ohio High School Athletic Association. I have been told Carmona signed a professional contact there, so if he comes back to the United States, it won't be for college. Also, Mike Pilgrim, a 17-year-old senior at Cincinnati Purcell-Marian is wisely going to prep school next year, probably Virginia Beach (Coastal Christian) VA. Pilgrim has a Scottie Pippin-like frame and keeps getting better and better. I expect him to be a top 20 prep school player next year. Another Queen City native, 6'7 power forward Norm Plummer,from Cincinnati (Fairfield) OH, who was ranked #10 pre-season, has run out of eligibility and will also attend prep school.
  As for the younger players, Ohio seems to mirror rest of the nation, because the Class of 2004 and the Class of 2006 both have a lot of potential. The #1 sophomore, 6'3 point guard Jamar Butler from Lima (Shawnee) OH, has already committed to Cincinnati. Butler is also on pace to break Jay Burson's record for most points scored during a career in Ohio. There is also an abundance of tall, talented post players in the Class of 2004, although they all need to keep developing. The #2 sophomore is 6'9 Matt Terwillinger from Troy (H.S.) OH; #3 sophomore is 7'0 Seth Gorney from Vandalia (Butler) OH, the #4 sophomore is 6'10, 350 lbs. Aaron Agnew from Bellaire (H.S.) OH; the #9 sophomore is 6'7, 225 lbs. 6'7 Ryan Weisma from Newark (H.S.) OH; and the #13 sophomore is 6'11 Drew Walker from Port Clinton (H.S.) OH. Another sophomore moves up in the rankings is 6'6 Josh Duncan, who was an unknown last summer because his father didn't want him playing AAU or summer basketball. However, Duncan had a break-out sophomore year at Cincinnati Moeller and is now drawing comparisons to former Crusader star Matt Sylvester.
  Two players in the Class of 2004 have changed their status since November, as 6'9 Soph Chris Moore recently transferred from Madison (H. S.) OH to powerhouse Lakewood (St. Edward) OH and the ultra-talented 6'3 Soph John Brown transferred to Cincinnati (Woodward) OH to Grove City (George Jr Republic) PA and was reclassified as a freshman (Class of 2005). Speaking of 2005, one thing is for sure, the top three players are 6'5 Frosh man-child Jamelle Cornley from Columbus (Brookhaven) OH, 6'1 FroshTravis Walton from Lima (Senior) OH, who is a great defender with tremendous quickness (imagine Greg Simpson minus the baggage), and 6'8 Frosh Ross Morin, who is an athletic and skilled scorer for Cincinnati (Princeton) OH. The Class of 2006 (like 2004) has great size with six of the top 11 players list as over 6'4. Aaron Pogue from Dayton (McFarland) OH is already 6'6 and 235 lbs., while small-town star Kirk Huelsman from St. Henry (H.S.) OH is 6'8 and growing . However, the player who is most talented and flashy is 6'2 Marcus Johnson, who is from the Cleveland area, but who will attend Akron (St. Vincent-St. Mary) OH next year and be groomed to replace LeBron James. Actually, Johnson's game is more like Allan Iverson's and if he ever comes close to Iverson's ability, Irish fans may continue to pack JAR Arena in Akron, OH after James is long gone."

  night that he still hasn't cut his school list down to a workable
  number. "I have many schools that I am interested in," Bass
  said. "I don't know when I might make a decision. I could wait
  until the Spring."
  
  Bass emerged as one of the top players at his position at the
  ABCD camp. He possesses a wide body and is blessed with
  good athleticism. He has an excellent frame and runs the floor
  well. Brandon is also quick off his feet. "I was happy with the
  way the summer went," Bass said. "But I am going to try to
  work on my skills more this winter."
  
  Bass has heard from Georgetown, LSU, Mississippi State,

"He is still committed to Memphis," said The Winchendon School's head basketball coach, Mike Byrnes. "He is an outstanding player and will be an outstanding college basketball player."
  
  The 6-5, 210 pound small forward, who played last year at Troy (OH) High School, ran into eligibiliy problems last year. The Ohio High School Athletic Association in October denied his appeal to be eligible for interscholastic athletics last year for Troy.
  
  Carmona first verbally committed to Oliver Purnell's Dayton Flyers program even through the Atlantic 10 school was out of scholarship slots. Earlier there were indications he was headed to Memphis. Then he changed his mind and gave a commitment to John Calipari's program. "He remains committed to Memphis," Byrnes said again last night.

  Who has seen Chadd Moore play extensively? I've seen him briefly. Is he an impact player, or is he a project? Will he be playing the PG this year, backup or will he need a year or two? What are his strongpoints? Can he run an offense? Can he hit the 3 pointer consistently? Is he quick? Can he play defense? My opinion from what little I've seen is that he can play "D" and is quick. But I haven't seen him shoot enough to know if he's effective or not? I know he's been listed on some sites as more of a SG than a PG....although he went to Oak Hill to play PG and better his skills.   The Bengals suck every year. They can't even get up for opening game. They can't even sell out their opening game. The fans know that they suck and always will. Those guys are a bunch of pussies. They can't tackle, can't hit, can't block, basically can't do anything. Spikes and Simmons obviously are getting new contracts and now that they'll have alot of money, they don't need to play hard anymore. Same with everyone else. Once they prove themselves, they don't need to tackle, run, or catch, because the check will still be in the mail. The San Diego Chargers manhandled the Bengals.....unreal. Wasn't our defense suppose to be good this year? I mean, I knew our offense would suck or take some time to get going. It doesn't take a brain surgeon to devise a defensive scheme to stop the Bengals. All you have to do is go in thinking "stop the run"...."stop Corey Dillon" and make the Bengals prove they can pass on you......which we all know they can't. We might as well trade Corey Dillon.....and have mercy on the rest of his career because until we can pass the ball, our opponents will continue to key on him and stack the line. He has nowhere to go. Geez, put Rudi Johnson in and give him the ball......and use Corey as a decoy or something.
  
  We suck. Plain and simple. The only excuse I'll give the defense is that they were on the field way too long. So, I'll give them an out in the second half......but they let San Diego score at will in the first half when they were still fresh.....so it's their own darn fault that they were behind in the second half. Pathetic.
  
  And everyone keeps talking about an improved Offensive Line. Didn't Paul Alexander say this was the best O-line he'd had since he took over that position? I don't see it. They were as bad as I've seen in the last 10 years.

  Leonard Harden, a 6-9, 240 pound center/power forward from
  Garden City C.C. in Garden City, Kan., is in the process of
  taking several official visits this fall.
  
  Rivalshoops.com caught up with Garden City Head Coach Earl
  Diddle on Wednesday afternoon, and he said that Harden
  returned from his first official visit to UNLV this past weekend.
  
  "I think his visit to UNLV went very well," Diddle said.
  "Leonard is very bright, and they are going to like Leonard and
  he's going to like them. They've worked real hard on him, and
  it's nice that schools who work hard are able to stay in there
  and get a visit."
  
  Diddle added that Harden will visit Pittsburgh from Sept. 6-8,
  Auburn from Sept. 13-15, Cincinnati from Sept. 27-29 and
  Texas A&M from Sept. 20-22. Other schools in the mix
  include Miami and Kansas State.
  
  "I think they are all good schools for Leonard," Diddle said.
  "Pitt has a great system of play, and Auburn plays in the SEC. I
  just want whatever is best for the kid, that's all I am concerned
  about."
  
  Last year, Harden averaged 10.4 points and seven rebounds
  per contest. Rivalshoops.com caught Harden in action three
  times last winter, and he had gotten into considerably better
  shape than when we had seen him last summer at the adidas Big
  Time Tournament in Las Vegas.
  
  So while he's not a gazelle or overly athletic, Harden is a skilled,
  physical space-eater in the low post.
  
  "Style of play is really going to be important for him," Diddle
  pointed out. "His conditioning, although he's worked on it, is
  always a factor."
  
  "He has very good offensive skills," Diddle continued. "He can
  shoot the medium range jump shot, he has good post moves
  and is a good passer. He also catches the ball very well."
  
  "He has to be able to find a way to score against bigger people,
  because he's only 6-9, so he is going to have to be power
  oriented at times, and then also be able to finesse guys," Diddle
  concluded. "Style of play is everything to him."

I have spent the past couple of years in Europe trying to track down a basketball player who possess fundamentals, heart, courage, tenacity, a good defender, great outside shooter, a guy who runs the lanes hard on the break, blocks shots, makes good passes and has good shot selection and is very coachable. After looking high and low, I still have yet found that player. Actually, I don't think that player exists on this universe…

  I just deleted 45 messages from the board. I had received e-mails from some of the regular posters here, and some posters left post on the board asking people to stop with the name calling. Guys, I really don't know what to tell you. Most of the attacks are aimed at KB, so let me say this...KB leaves his e-mail address with almost every post, so if you have a problem with him, e-mail him. It's a free country, so you guys can debate about recruits with KB all you want on this board. What we don't need though are all the personal attacks and people leaving post names insulting another poster. I mean come on guys. I hate having to do this, but enough is enough.   I want Bass bad. Recruiters compare Lang to Shaquille.....not what I heard. I heard Lang is full of potential because of his size....but I also heard he's fat and slow and just hangs under the basket. I heard, just like this E-mailer, that he can be outrebounded by more athletic players and has a tendency to get into foul trouble. I hope it's true. I hear he's not Shaquille.
  
  Bass on the other hand is a more well rounded shooter than Maxiell but just as athletic. I'd love to have Maxiell / Hicks / and Bass playing the SF/PF positions with one coming off the bench.....totally awesome. We just need a center. Bender is my choice. He doesn't have to be a true center.....we can go with a PF playing center.....geez, Xavier has been doing it for years with David West. Bender has the girth to handle it.

  They must not really think Hollman will get an extra year. In the entire scheme of things.....if we get Whaley and Bender.....who really cares? He didn't play last year and I'm not sure how much he will contribute anyway.
  
  All this is a big "what if". I'm pretty sure about Nick Williams and Bender. Whaley may go pro but would benefit from going to UC and keeping his nose clean. If he'd stay out of trouble and play like an All-American.....he could lift himself up to a lottery pick.....and so could Bender.
  
  Gives me chills to think about a frontline combination with backups of Whaley, Bender, K.Johnson, Maxiell, Hicks, Bass, Kirkland, and Flowers! That's as good a frontcourt as you can get in my opinion.
  
  The guards ain't too shabby either with Nick Williams, Chadd Moore, Tony Bobbitt, Field Williams and Kirkland too!
  
  That team kicks some serious butt.

  First time poster long time lurker, but thought I would add some scoop. About 2 months ago I was at a fund raiser that Huggins was at and based on some comments I heard directly from the man, here's what I think...
  1) D.L will be back in uniform this year if and only if the charges are dropped. An aquital would take too long and a plea won't cut it. However, rumor has it that "the other side to the story" basically clears DL.
  2) Huggs is really excited about E Hicks - he thinks that this will haunt a certain NC coach for a long time to come...
  3) Tack - wouldn't commit, but seemed pretty confident
  That's all I got - but it came straight from "the man's" mouth..

Minor & Sean Morris (Cinco Ranch HS) went straight to work against Smith & Rodney Foster (Mayde Creek).
