• Interesting about Xavier.....what are your opinions? -- Chatter, 08:51:40 08/31/02 Sat
  In reading Poop Scoop......I saw where their 2003 recruits are ranked like 120, 140, and 170......what's up with that? Can't Xavier recruit anymore?
  
  Justin Cage, Roberts, and Doellman. It seems like since Thad Matta got there, they're willing to take a "lesser" quality type player. Which will most likely lead to "lesser" results.
  
  As my previous posts indicate.......Xavier's recruiting class for 2002 fell to the bottom of the A-10 when they lost Randy Holbrook. According to Hoop...he was their only impact recruit.

  While other CUSA teams get highly touted freshman that will more than likely go pro in one year......UC's options will be plentiful come Spring. Like Mike in Clifton said, Parker, Whaley, Bender.......things change, players leave programs, you never know what will happen. Some of these verbals may re-nig on their commitment and change schools........look at Alexander Johnson.....he was a lock for UC and Georgia came out of nowhere to get him....which was very shady.
  
  I think they'll be several topnotch JUCO options come Spring and some players that change their minds. You never know.....after a season of college basketball, if UC puts up a good showing, some recruit will take notice and see an opening to play right away at SF or Center.
  
  I think this recruiting class will be a late blooming one......definitely Spring.
  
  Didn't we get Bobbitt and Kareem Johnson at the last minute last year.......KJ definitely, I think Bobbitt was Spring. Moore, Hicks, and Kirkland were locked up early.....so that shows a pattern. High Schoolers sign earlier and JUCO's sign in the Spring. Which may mean this will be a heavy-laden JUCO recruiting class.
  
  The only high schooler I can see signing at this point is maybe Brandon Bass. They really have no one else on the radar screen that is favoring UC. Unless things change during the school year......I don't see any other high schoolers coming in this class. Hopefully they'll talk some kid into coming to Midnight Madness and changing his mind.

  I haven't been on that thing in so long. I read Kevin's post below and decided to check it out this morning....what a laugher.
  
  The guy is right, though. They spend more time bashing UC than talking about Xavier basketball, what a joke.
  
  Everyone at UC is a thug.....everyone at Xavier is an angel. I was just getting over this whole Xavier animosity thing and then I go and read their board and get all pissed off again.
  
  I'll say it again. I never disliked their team, but their fans are the most arrogant, jealous, pathetic, hypocritical, losers in all of college basketball. I probably know as much about their players and team as most Xavier fans, because I do pay attention and like their team......but their fans piss me off and make me start hating their entire program.
  
  Duke Fan makes a few good points, though. They really don't have any good recruits coming in the next couple of years, unless they are "diamonds in the rough". They lost their premier recruit this year, Randy Holbrook, although they're saying he will be back next year after he straightens out his academics......."straightens out his academics"???? Sounds like conversation usually reserved for UC.....but it's been a Xavier conversation the last several years.
  
  Duke Fan says they try to do anything to protect their holier than thou image.....I couldn't agree more. They'd kick David West off the team if he had some negative image incident this summer. All they care about his how the school looks, not the kid. Never have, never will. As for David West coming back: They all revel in the idea that he came back to graduate and uphold the Xavier standard.......hahaha! Get a grip. He wouldn't have been drafted that high last year anyway. I think he's perceived as a baby and he's not an all-around type of NBA player. He will be able to better showcase those talents this year, but Sato will take some attention away from him.
  
  Xavier fans make more excuses for why they haven't achieved more......most of them have to do with "academic standards" and "holier than thou image".
  
  I'm starting to like our thug image at UC. It will never go away, even if we recruit 5 angels from heaven to play for us. Our academics are much better and probably better than Xavier's at this point....hell, they can't even qualify their recruits.
  
  Give the opponent something to focus on other than how good we are on the court.
  
  And once again, Xavier returns 4 of 5 starters, like last year......and UC has 1 returning starter......it will be interesting to see the Crosstown Shootout this year. Xavier always seems to have most of their starting lineup back, and UC always seems to be replacing 3 or 4 in the starting lineup. They are preseason ranked by some at #7. That will make it more interesting. They come to UC this year. It will be a game that if UC wins, will put UC on the map this year because up until then, UC will not have had many quality games. And if we lose, we were suppose to lose......and we can use an excuse like Xavier does......we can say, if Rod Flowers would have played (like David West), we would have won!
  
  Oh my. I sure have the Xavier hatred flowing this morning. I should continue to stay away from that Xavier Musketeer message board. Their idiotic arrogance always ticks me off.

  ...for the late commitments. By then, alot of the scholarships at other programs will be filled because they were afraid to wait and maybe our chances will be better with Bass. I think UC is going to get Nick Williams, Whaley (if he doesn't go pro), Bender (I think it's a done deal depending on his attitude), and hopefully Bass.....I think they're going to leave this scholarship open for him and I hear they told him they'd wait until he decides, however long it takes within reason. Again, he supposedly loves Kenyon Martin and the Bearcat style of play, so, we still got a chance. If not Bass, we either don't use the scholarship or fill it with a SF...but he has to be worth it. Maybe a JUCO. So, in theory, we've really already filled 3 of our 4 scholarships. Williams has verballed......Whaley has said that if he doesn't go pro, he'll play for UC (and no one else is even mentioned....and I don't think anyone else is willing to take him because of the publicity nightmare.....which I think is stupid....and go ahead and insert nasty responses here), and finally, behind the scenes Bender is straightening out his attitude to come play for the 'Cats next year and install some pain on his former coach and teammates at Louisville! That's 3 of 4 if Whaley and Bender don't go pro or screw up.
  
  The 4th schollie is for Bass.
  
  I see all my verbage and how it can be twisted around and thrown back at me....blah, blah, blah....."Chatter, listen to yourself...........if Whaley and Bender don't screw up.....blah, blah, blah.....no one else will take him because of the publicity nightmare.....blah, blah, blah....".......who frickin cares. Many have said, but I will say it again. If Huggs is confident it will work out, then I'm behind Huggs 100%. I haven't always been......but at this point....he knows what he's getting himself into and I'm sure he's set forth some warnings.
  
  I'll take a 6'10" 5 star player and a 6'9" top 20 player coming to my school.
  
  I just feel like these guys have to know they're chances for success are slim without playing and living by the rules from here on out. Some don't get it, like Donald Little.......but if a guy is given a second chance and turns his life around.....I'm all for it.

  He's rated an 8 by Poop Scoop. Now that he's going prep and his recruiting is wide open again.......should UC recruit this kid? I know he stung us at like 3 a.m. in the morning, but isn't this type of quality kid worth another shot?
  
  He's listed at 6'10". He sounds like an impact player to me. And UC seems to get the kids that chose elsewhere and then it didn't pan out.......like Nick Williams, Robert Whaley, Jamal Davis......etc., etc.........they find out that UC is the place they should have gone. Maybe the UC coaches can convince him that his opportunity to play Center right away will be there because of our void of big men. I say go for him.

  What does all this mean? I don't have the foggiest.....
  
  What I see is this:
  You can't replace what Logan did.....but what you can do is have more options that score, which might be better in the long run anyway. We need a leader, and one always comes out of the woodwork, but I'm not sure who it will be right now. Stokes most likely and we hope. Can Barker replace Logan's ball handling and defense.......I think he can run the team, and I think that's the key. He doesn't need to score like Logan (and he won't and can't), but he does need to play good defense and get the ball in the right players hands........and he has many options, Field Williams, Tony Bobbitt, Jason Maxiell, and Leonard Stokes. Last year we felt like we had 2 offensive options.....Logan and then maybe Stokes.
  
  Jason Maxiell's numbers were better than Jamal Davis'. His biggest downfall is defensive foul trouble. Teams know he'll foul and they get him into trouble. Maybe if he has it happen early in the season when it is less important, he'll learn to avoid it. But his ppg and rpg if you figure by minute are much better than Davis'. If Maxiell plays 32 mpg next season and his rpg average holds up....it translates to 10.3 rpg in 32 mpg....not bad. His ppg would translate to 12.3 ppg in 32 mpg.
  
  Same with Field Williams. In 32 mpg, his ppg translates to 13.9 ppg.
  
  What is my point? I believe Stokes' ppg average of 12.7 last year will go up figuring his increased leadership and increase in mpg at maybe 34 mpg, he should avg. like 15.3 ppg. I believe Leonard will shoot way better than 30% from 3 pt. land......probably closer to 35% and maybe higher.
  I believe that even if Field doesn't average 13.9 ppg, that he and Bobbitt will avg. between 13 and 16 ppg. I believe Maxiell will avg. atleast 12 ppg. Those 4 players will combine for about 45 ppg and one of them will come off the bench. We lost 4 starters last year that combined for 46 ppg. I think that the combination of Stokes, F. Williams, Tony Bobbitt, and J-Max will garner more offense than the only two options last year - Logan and Stokes. Why? Because it's harder to stop 4 options than 2 options.
  
  Rebounding a concern? Maybe...maybe not. Maxiell will avg. over 10 a game if he avoids foul trouble. Stokes will avg 5 pg, and the center combo needs to avg. 7 or 8. We lost 17 rpg in McElroy, Davis, and Little. I believe that Maxiell, K-Johnson, and Stokes can replace that. Shoot, Max and Stokes should get 15 between them.....so the center only needs to grab 3 to best last year's lost starting post players, and you know they should get atleast 5 to 8 depending on how things go.
  
  It really comes down to the PG and Center positions. We've got the others covered pretty well. Defense will determine alot. Barker is usually solid, but Stokes, Field, and Max really need to play better defense.....they all could be taken last year. I hear Bobbitt and Chadd Moore are pretty good defensive players......so we shall see.
  
  I believe the 3 pt. shooting will be much better next year. Bobbitt and Field will shoot close to 40%, Stokes 35%, Barker 32%, Moore and Kirkland 30%. And think about the following year when Nick Williams gets here.....unreal.
  
  Defense, PG, and Center are our key concerns. But you'll always be concerned about defense when you lose 4 starters. But really, last year, they surprised us.

  • We'll be fine. Each year when there is any concern, which there shouldn't be. Each year on Huggins last radio show of the season and his first of the next season, people call in asking all these questions, acting real worried, and he calmly says "We'll be fine." As long as Bobby is here, UC will be good and will at least be a top 10-15, and you can bank on that. I like this team even more than last years- this upcoming years team may lack a CURRENT All-American, but it will go 9-10 deep. And if you have read Bob Huggins book, which I did this summer, you know from common knowledge that he likes ball-handlers and rebounders, and well-conditioned players, BUT the 1 thing he likes the most in a team is DEPTH. North Carolina had 2 players with a rating of 9 and one with a rating of 10....so watch out for them in the coming years....of course that's if they can keep them. Duke had 2 with a rating of 9.
  
  As for our rivals (?) across the road.....Xavier had the #32 recruiting class BUT they just lost Randy Holbrook who was rating an (8) which brings their point total down from 21 pts. to 13 pts. which drops their class to the 85 range. Finn is rated a (4) and the others Angelo Smith (3), Brandon Cole (3), Anthony Myles (3). Things don't look good for Xavier in the coming years. I looked at their 2003 class player ratings and they are in the 100's....yikes. Seems things have slipped a bit since Pete and Skippy left.
  
  In fact, the Atlantic 10 doesn't hit the recruiting class list until #45 UMass, #50 LaSalle, #54 Duquesne, #57 Temple, #57 G.W., #57 Fordham, #67 Dayton, #67 (ties) St. Joe's,#85 Xavier.

  I recognized alot of guys we were in (and rated 8 or higher) on but couldn't get like Anthony Roberson, Matt Trannon, Antwain Barbour, Deron Williams, Brandon Brooks, Bracy Wright, Jarrett Jack, Kennedy Winston, Alexander Johnson, Terry Licorish, Ricky Clements. All were rated an 8.

  They're already ranking classes for 2003 at ESPN.com...Memphis is a shaky no. 1 with Louisville and Charlotte in the top ten as well. Where does our single commitment (from a guy one poster described as "not good enough to play for K-state) place the Cats? 10th...they feel so strongly about Williams ability to succeed that his commitment alone gives us a top ten class. Admittedly it's early and many people think the ESPN guys are hacks but that's some high praise.

  This guy played for Georgetown his freshman year but had a dispute about playing time. Instead of sitting out a year, he's going JUCO for a year and then back to Division 1. Here's the scoop:
  
  "Harvey Thomas knows what its like to play on basketball biggest stage. He was a full scholarship player with Georgetown last season. But after off court issues with head coach Craig Esherick, Thomas decided to transfer to a junior college in order to continue playing instead of sitting out a year had he transferred to another division 1 school. Daytona Beach Community College is the lucky school to have him.
  
  The 6-8, 220 small forward played nearly 15 minutes a game for the Hoyas last year averaging 5.2 points, 2.8 rebounds, and a steal a game. Those numbers are not a good indication of the type of player Thomas really is. Most recruiting services had Thomas locked in the top 20 of his class as senior in high school. With a smaller stage at the junior college level, Thomas could be a star in the making and a possible prospect looking to make the jump to the NBA.
  
  Thomas is a very long player that can shoot the ball from deep but also work hard enough inside to give the opposition fits trying to match up with him. He did a good job of showing his range, stepping out three feet beyond the college three point line. The lanky player also played aggressive defense.
  
  Playing against several teams that simply couldn’t match up against the bigger Daytona team, Thomas averaged nearly eight rebounds a game without having to work too hard for the boards. His long arms also swatted away several shots. He also had several dunks that made many of the players who were watching jump up and leave the gym in utter disbelief. In an open floor, the all everything Thomas displayed his ball handling skills without any problems.
  
  With recently drafted Qyntel Woods shining at last year’s camp, the bar may have been raised a little higher. Thomas didn’t seem to have any problems with that. He should be considered one of the best players in the junior college ranks this upcoming season. He has the skills that the NBA looks for. But a weight program would do wonders for Thomas.   The Baton Rouge (LA) Capitol 6-8, 235-pound BF has yet to narrow down his list to a manageable handful. For now, it appears that Cincinnati, LSU and UConn will receive official visits while Tennessee, Miami, Mississippi State, USC, Florida State and Georgetown will likely battle for the final two visits.
  
  ``My list is so long, but I think I’ve made progress" Bass told PrepStars.com. "I just haven’t had time to narrow it down yet. I want to sign in the second signing period."
  
  Bass is considered more of a big forward, but he’s working on his ball-handling and perimeter shooting in order to be able to also play wing forward in college.
  
  He said that playing time and an up-tempo game that suits his own playing style will be two primary factors when it comes down to him making a decision.
  
  ``I don’t want to go to a school where you have to set screens to get open," Bass said.
  
  Bass had a solid summer, but he wasn’t completely satisfied with his play.
  
  ``It was alright," he said. "I played OK. I just thought I could have done a lot better, though."

  I only think about moving Maxiell to SF if he can handle it. He'd have to handle the ball better which is unlikely he will. Max is not really even 6'7".....he's more like 6'5 1/2 or 6'6 which is small for a poward forward. I love Max, don't get me wrong.....but if we were in the running for a 6'10" stud and a 6'8 or 6'9" PF....I'd gladly move Max to SF. Right now, it ain't going to happen. But in defense of your point, Maxiell quite often replaced the 6'9" Jamal Davis and grabbed way more rebounds and points in less minutes.....so there goes my thinking. Obviously, Maxiell is a freak of nature and gets things done no matter how tall the opponent is.
  
  As for Nick Williams......I think when he gets here....he will be more experienced and more valuable than Chadd Moore at that time. As we've stated alot now, he started as a true freshman and did pretty well. The stat that staggers my mind is the fact he shot 58% from 3 pt. land over the last 11 games of the season.....impressive. The threesome of Nick and Field Williams, along with Tony Bobbitt could be overwhelming for opponents if they shoot to their abilities. Of course, that's a season away. then add Maxiell, Hicks, Kirkland, Kareem Johnson, Flowers......doesn't look so bad....and I'm sure we'll have others by then, also. I am not opposed to seeing Rod Flowers get some minutes this year. He still has something to prove......but, I called Huggs show last year and asked about Rod and if he was in their plans and Huggs answered that Rod had made great strides and was improving every week.....and that he was very happy with what Rod Flowers was doing......he also said that Rod's problem was that he had Jamal Davis, Maxiell, Little in front of him in the lineup. Well, two of those 3 are gone.......so I wouldn't be surprised to see him get some minutes this year, especially with Maxiell's penchant for foul trouble. Rod Flowers will play a minimum of 15 minutes per game this year......that is my prediction......unless Maxiell doesn't foul ever again.....lol.
  
  What we forget about these young guys is that they: 1. Don't know the system - offense and defense 2. Don't know how hard they are expected to play 3. Don't know about Bearcat defense and what is required 4. They aren't used to be yelled at like Huggs will yet at them 5. There is an adjustment period to absorb all of this
  
  I can't wait until Bearcat Basketball. This season promises to be one of surprise in my opinion. I think expectations are low considering we lost Logan, I-Mac, Davis, and Little. But honestly, Logan and I-Mac are the two most missed. Maxiell and Flowers can replace Davis, and I'm confident that the 3 centers can replace Little. And while Logan's leadership will be missed......I really feel like if someone steps up and leads....that the offense of Stokes / Bobbitt / Field Williams / Maxiell / and the bench of Chadd Moore, Hicks, and Kirkland.......will more than replace Logan....if not be better than because of the many weapons. We should not be one dimensional....and I hope it comes out that way.

  While i usually let chatter evaluate the roster but he keep wanting to put Maxiell on the wing so he may need to sober up :)
  Maxiell is our best bet at power forward. if any recruit is good enough to come in and replace Max, he's probably heading for the pros. I'm looking forward to seeing Flowers. He has a nose for the ball. I expect him to start at center if Huggs don't go with Max and Hicks, I don't think he will.Remember flowers first game at UC (scrimmage) 14 & 13 when he gets the minutes he can perform.
  I expect Williams to put up numbers off the bench, He and Bobbitt are a great duo I hope the point guards can create shots for him and I hope Huggs don't screw him out of breaking his boys Levetts 3pt record like he did Logs :(. I expect only a little improvement out of Stokes still slumping on occassion.
  As for the future, this Nick Williams guy is like Deja vu I would not be shocked if UC signed another point guard. Remember one of my favorite bearcats? the underused D'juan Baker? Listed as a 6'4" , 6'5" point until he got on campus where he was around 6'2" at the most and never brought the ball up. something to think about. And once again, don't count your 2004 chickens just yet :(

  Now that we have Nick Williams....our PG position is set for the next 3 to 4 years with Barker, Moore, Williams, and Butler, in that succession. Moore and Williams will be battling it out at the same time......competition is good.
  
  We have Bobbitt and Field Williams the next 2 years at SG and I'm sure one of the PG's can fill that spot if needed when they're gone. Also, there's Kirkland.
  
  The SF position has many options. Stokes for one more year. Kirkland, Hicks, and Maxiell if we get a true PF.
  
  PF is Maxiell's unless we get a more talented bigger-sized player.
  
  C is the question mark. We have it covered for two more years. But Terwilliger doesn't get here for 2 more years.
  
  Really, we need big men more than anything....and preferably high school players that can develop. JUCO's just clog up what we already have with Johnson, Hollman, Grove, and Flowers.
  
  It would be nice to have Bass commit. That would make for the start of a topnotch recruiting class.

  There must be some reason we're still recruiting him. Because he lives a long way away, and many top programs are recruiting him. Usually, UC moves on when we're one of 8 schools in the mix......maybe this guy has given them enough reason to believe UC is high on his list. Maybe wanting to be like his favorite player Kenyon Martin will lead him to UC.
  
  We always talk about how we thought Kenyon Martin winning POY and his development from average to great would lead others to UC. Maybe this will be the kid that comes here for that reason. Who knows. I hope so.

  "Will is certainly going to college first. I was just stating what they think of Blalock as compared to the other high school guards in the country. It is obvious by my posts that I am close to the team. One of the "scouts" is the director of player personel for the Boston Celtics. He said that Will was the player we could not do without and also our MVP. He feels Will is as good as any and better than 95% of the point guards in the country. The other scout is a scout for the New York Knicks. He felt that Blalock was the best of what he was looking for in a pg. Obviously Lavender played great and was as good as anyone this summer. Heck I saw him guard Deng for half a game in Orlando and he outplayed Deng. But he is not ranked ahead of Deng, nor should he be. I'm not saying that Blalock is better than Lavender or Paul. Will he be down the road, I think so, and maybe that's what the scout from the Knicks was looking for, potential, as Will certainly has more physical gifts. Not sure. I totally understand if you don't agree. I'm just telling you what those guys had to say, and when Blalock played Causey, he killed him. When he played Darius Washington he annihilated him too, shut him down. When we played against Minor Will was clearly better. I just thought he would surely be in the top 50. One thing is for sure though Courtney played great for us, but there just isn't any question that Will was our best player. That comes straight from our coach."

  Our Ohio Editor Chris Johnson tells us that 6'10 Robert Whaley from Barton County (JC) KS, who is the consensus #1-ranked
  junior college player in the nation, and 6'4 Nick Williams from Chipola (JC) FL, who is also is one of the top junior college
  players in the nation, both have official visits planned this weekend at the University of Cincinnati. However, Johnson doesn't
  think the Bearcats chances are very good of getting Whaley, because it's already being rumored that he will be a lottery pick in
  next year's NBA Draft. Hopefully that's based on the fact that he's gotten a lot meaner and tougher inside than he was when we
  last saw him the summer before his senior year in high school. If you will recall, Whaley has always been a physical specimen
  and had incredible natural talent, but in high school he had no idea that he was a 6'10 man-child. And, if he still doesn't, playing
  for somebody like Cincinnati head coach Bob Huggins would certainly provide the toughness that he needs to make the big
  bucks down the road in the NBA. As a matter of fact, two year with Huggins would be worth a lot more financially down the

  I read Tony's UNC recruiting board....and it cracks me up how Daugherty is always suddenly in the mix for this top player or that top player. He's making some of the same mistakes that Calipari makes: Top recruits that don't stay.
  
  From Memphis to Louisville, to Charlotte to North Carolina......to Depaul (in the past)........it just seems like these coaches are more interesting in making a recruiting name for themselves than actually getting some quality team chemistry going and team experience going. Why do these guys recruit some of these players that aren't staying? It boggles my mind.
  
  We complain about Huggs not getting any "big men".....but honestly, all the Big men, if they're any good, are headed straight to the NBA out of high school or after one year of college.....because they know they can and they usually need the money.
  
  I've changed my mind. Recruit guards and SF's out of high school.....(less likely to go NBA) and recruit big men out of JUCO. If they went JUCO......they need a year or two of D-1 to get to the NBA.....and there's definitely some quality JUCO big men out there.
  
  Why even bother worrying about guys leaving early......get guys that are staying.
  
  Look at Charlotte...one good move they made was getting Cam Stephens out of the JUCO ranks......they got 2 quality years out of him and he was more valuable to Charlotte, then many other freshman big men were to other programs. What did Memphis get out of Amare Stoudemire? Uh-huh. What will they get out of Kendrick Perkins? Uh-huh.
  
  I should start praising these idiots for recruiting the way they do.........they're shooting themselves in the foot. Calipari has.....and Pitino might if he goes down the same path as it appear he will..........and Lutz is starting to do the same thing.
  
  Of course, alot of the hype is just that. Martin Iti might get to Charlotte and turn out to be another Hiram Fuller or some other guy that was suppose to be awesome. I remember how Chris Massie was the next coming.....and he didn't impress me last year. Or maybe they are looking beyond college already and could care less and therefore their performance is subpar....who knows.

  Two junior-college basketball players are scheduled to make official recruiting visits to the University of Cincinnati this weekend, their coaches say.
  
  One is Robert Whaley, a 6-foot-10, 270-pound center/forward from Barton County (Kan.) College, where former Bearcat Jamaal Davis played. Whaley has no visits to other schools scheduled, said his coach, Ryan Wolf.
  
  The other is Nick Williams, a 6-4 guard from Chipola College in Marianna, Fla., where incoming UC junior Kareem Johnson played. Williams started 25 of 29 games last season at Kansas State and averaged 9.0 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.5 assists a game in 28.2 minutes.
  
  Both players are probable preseason junior-college All-Americans, recruiting experts say.
  
  Whaley started slow in his first season at Barton County but ended up averaging 19 points and seven rebounds, Wolf said.
  
  Among UC's competition for Whaley is the NBA.
  
  “Robert Whaley's as good a player as there is in junior college,” said Jerry Mullen, who publishes Mullen's Roundball Review. “He's an NBA player — great hands, soft touch. I think he can be an (NBA) lottery pick (next spring) if he chooses to go that way.”
  
  Neither Wolf nor Mullen has any idea whether Whaley plans to turn pro in the spring or attend a Division I college.
  
  “I think he wants to find a school that will help him develop and a coach who will push him to the next level,” Wolf said. “If you want to become the best player you can be, coach (Bob) Huggins is definitely one of the guys you look at playing for. If he wants to be a top-5, top-10 (NBA draft) pick, he needs to go to school.”
  
  Whaley signed with Missouri out of Benton Harbor (Mich.) High School, where he missed most of his senior season after being indicted on sexual assault charges. The case was declared a mistrial and Michigan authorities declined to re-try the case. In June 2001, Missouri released Whaley from his letter of intent.
  
  Williams, from Mansfield, Texas, is expected to play point guard and shooting guard for Chipola, and UC is recruiting him as a combination guard. Williams has no other visits scheduled, but Oklahoma, Kansas, Auburn and Baylor are among the schools most interested.
  
  “I think his best position, and I think what Cincinnati wants him to be, is a point guard,” Chipola coach Ryan Cross said. “That's what he's going to play mostly for us. He's a bigger point guard that can score.”

  The 6-7, 240-pound Chicago (IL) Crane senior knows all
  about Walker, the former Kentucky star who has turned himself into an elite player ­ and one of the most versatile in the NBA ­with the Boston Celtics. Walker played at Mt. Carmel High in Chicago and helped coach Thompson's Illinois Fire at the adidas Big Time last month.

  Has anybody ever considered that maybe, after Tac Minor, UC isn't heavily recruiting anybody(Tyler Smith?) at PG because they think they can get a guy from the class of 2004. This does not count Jamar Butler who is considered more of a two-guard. 2003 is considered a weak year for point guards while '04 is stronger.
  Centers probably should be the focus since only the unproven Kareem Johnson is scheduled to be back in '03-'04. UC seems to be missing out on all their Center targets.
  Finally I'd like to get a school list on Nick Williams(6-4 2G, Chipola JC-FL). As I stated previously there are a lot of reasons to beleive he'll be recruited by UC.

He used one year of eligibility at Loserville last year and had to sit out a year to transfer, so he went the JUCO route, but could return next year to Div-I. This guy had serious attitude problems fueled by the hype of him being a Mickey D's AA. He's 6'9" and big. I would put money on Huggs being able to handle his shananigans and turning this guy around. He already had to stoop to the JUCO level....and having gone from High School All-Am. to Louisville and Pitino back down to JUCO would make you think the kid's had a year to ponder his future and what he needs to do.           • I've seen Jamar play 3 times. He can definitely handle the point. Granted his extra height will enable him to be more of a swing guard (spliting time between PG and SG). Jamar has a great talent for getting the ball exactly where it needs to be at exactly the right time. He's a great passer.   Those who know the official stats chime in.
  
  The SEC has more recruiting violations in football and basketball than any other conference BY FAR.
  
  That should make any recruit run from that conference because those programs are seconds away from being investigated at any time.
  
  Don't throw names at us from nearly a decade ago. We can throw National Championships at you from 40 years ago if you'd like. Not to mention possibly the GREATEST BASKETBALL PLAYER OF ALL TIME in Oscar Robertson......so just don't go there.....you look mighty stupid.
  
  Cincinnati is the only program, I repeat, the only program in the nation to have atleast one player drafted by the NBA for the last 8 consecutive years. How do you like them apples?
  
  Want to know why? Proset offense and defense.....considered by many to be the toughest defense in the country.
  
  Strength programs is one of the tops in the country.
  
  If the SEC is so great to play in, then why has LSU sucked for the last 10 years? Just wondering.......you make it out like it's benefitted LSU alot......but more like it's benefitted Kentucky and Arkansas to KICK YOUR ARSE every year.

  Tack Minor will be an LSU Tiger and I will tell you why. For one, LSU is approx a 3 hr drive from Houston. Likewise, his mother has already stated in public that she wants to be able to watch her son play. One important factor that you fail to mention is that his mother has already been offer a place to stay for the basketball season by relatives in the Baton Rouge area (i.e., the parent of Travis Minor of the Miami Dolphins who is a close relative). As far as the accusation that Minor would be better off attending Cincinnati because of the recent success of Steve Logan is ridiculous. Haven't you herd of Chris Jackson? Likewise, don't look for Brandon Bass to sign with the Bearcats as well. Brass is extremely close to his family and the chances that he will moving that far is unlikely.

  If we really examine the whole process......you have the top 20 to 50 kids getting all the publicity and hype....BUT.... as you can see recently, many other kids are starting to move to the forefront that haven't committed and are pretty good players, if not even better than some of the top-ranked players. When kids are ranked, all it does is make the lesser ranked players work harder and outshine the higher ranked players. Typically, the high ranked players coast a bit and the lesser ranked work harder.....which isn't a bad thing.
  
  For example, when the summer started, Tac Minor was the number one ranked PG in the class of 2003 on most lists, but at the end of the summer, Andrew Lavender has moved way up and is #1 on many lists. Most of it is hype and some of it is which college is looking at you. When Duke looks at a kid, for some mysterious reason, it makes that kid a higher ranked kid whether he deserves it or not.....go figure.
  
  There are plenty of kids still available. If I have one complaint, it's that the ones UC was after, it seems like they were wasting their time. You would think they'd have known who was pulling their chain and who was not. With Tac and Bass still left, do they really think they will come to UC?
  
  When a Jamal Warren and Quentin Day both are very interested in UC.....why not recruit THEM HEAVILY? Aren't they top 50 to top 100 players?
  
  IF Andrew Lavender and Brandon Foust REALLY SAID they'd be interested in UC if UC recruited them, why not recruit THEM HEAVILY?
  
  Those are the things I'm upset with. I know we will get it done anyway......but when something is practically handed to you like a Jamal Warren saying "I want to go to UC".....what is the holdup?????
  
  That's my only gripe. We have plenty of time and more names appear daily. Most of the guys we didn't get won't be around in college that long anyway....so did it really matter anyway?
  
  As for Tac Minor.......I would still love to have him come here and play. If he does come from an economically poor household.......he should still consider UC over LSU...and here's why: Look at 5'10" Steve Logan and his NBA draft position. I don't think LSU is going to get Tac into the NBA........but UC would be a good place to work his way there. I think Tac is a smart kid that needs some court discipline and learn how to play the game the same way that Kenyon and Logan did. That's what makes an average player great. That's what makes a very talented player even greater..........understanding how to play the game.
  
  Tac seems a little selfish right now, but I'm sure he's showcasing his talent. If he learns how to run an offensive scheme and learns to penetrate and dish to the open man or break down the defense with a quick layup.....then he will be a true PG and UC is a great place to do all of that.
  
  We still love ya and want ya Tac..........and UC is a good place to hone your skills and a great place to win a National Championship.
  
  We had the right corps of players a couple years back and that's all it would take again. We got some good players coming in right now and in the next couple of years.......namely Maxiell, Hicks, Kirkland, Moore, Terwilliger, Jamar Butler, etc., etc........we need a center, though.
  
  We will be fine and our future recruiting class will be coming out of the woodwork soon, I believe. Let's all be patient....including me.

  Columbus (OH) Brookhaven and All-Ohio dynamic duo Andrew Lavender and Brandon Foust are a package deal. No, seriously. They are going to college together. Bank on it.
  
  For those who still might have their doubts, we offer the following list of five schools. Each school is bringing the players in together for their official visits.
  People still call about one or the other," Brookhaven coach Bruce Howard said. "They are definitely going together."
  Apparently, the pair will visit Pittsburgh the weekend of August 30. Next up will be Clemson the weekend of Sept. 5, followed by Oklahoma the weekend of Sept. 13. Marquette bats fourth with the Sept. 20 trip and Mississippi goes 5th on Oct. 5.
  
  It's not out of the realm of possibility that a decision is reached prior to the completion of the visits, but the plan right now is to take all five trips.
