• I was checking the NJC AA stats according to their official website.... -- Chatter, 11:12:02 01/24/03 Fri
  ....and there's a kid from Panola JC (Derek Hollman's JUCO) that is both leading all of JUCO in scoring and rebounding by a mile. His name is Omar Thomas and he's 6'5" and a sophomore.

  #2WG Malik Hairston 6-6 195 Detroit,MI Renaissance. He proved his mercurial rise this spring wasn't a fluke at Nike. He hit jumper from beyond arc with regularity and can shake and bake with best wings in class, but it's his ability to lock down opponent that really sets him apart! He has Arizona, Cincinnati, UConn, Kansas, Michigan St, Ohio St, and UCLA as early leaderboard.
  
  #4WG Jason Rich 6-4 190 Orlando,FL Dr Phillips. This quick wing can throw down some highlights off the dribble or stick jumper from three to set it up. Consistency was key to great week at Nike. Has a long list of schools that includes Florida, Florida St, Cincinnati, USC, UConn, UK, Texas, Oklahoma, Georgia Tech, Kansas, Georgetown, and Vanderbilt.
  
  #6WG Isaiah Swann 6-2 185 Oak Hill Academy. This combo knows how to score with drive or jumper and is an excellent passer as well. He may mature into point down the road, but right now is a guy who wants to take big shot offensively. He is looking at Arizona, Cincinnati, UConn, Florida, Georgetown, Georgia Tech, UK, Louisville, Maryland, Tennessee, and Virginia.

  #4C Glenn Davis 6-8 330 Baton Rouge,LA Univerity Lab. "Big Baby" just flat out uses body to move you out of the way inside and can outrun most wings in transition at 240-pounds. He doesn't play above the rim a lot, but can flush drop step with authority. Right now he's got interest from UK, Indiana, Florida St, UNC, Georgia, LSU, Miami, Tennessee, and Cincinnati.
  
  #6C Walter Sharpe 6-9 225 Birmingham,AL Parker. This high post athlete can play on blocks or facing hoop. He blocks shots with quick hops and has touch to 16-feet. He may move to four spot in time, but will help out at low post initially at next level. He says that Alabama, Auburn, Cincinnati, Miami, Miss St, and UAB comprise his leaderboard at this time.
  
  #1SF Dorell Wright 6-7 185 Lawndale,CA (Prep School TBA). This high flying jumping jack can score from outside or fly to hoop off the dribble. He is a highlight film waiting to happen! As his jumper becomes more consistent (hits a three occasionally) and gets stronger look for him to explode a la Carmelo Anthony. He hopes that prep school will give him shot to physically mature. He has interest from Cincinnati, UConn, Iowa, DePaul, Florida, Louisville, Michigan, USC, and Utah.

  Here's what I saw today. Field Williams handled the ball more, but not enough to create a shot and his shot was off most of the time. He did not look like a D-1 player to me.
  
  Maxiell played OK, but did not look like a go to guy on offense or defense. He played along side Brandon Hunter and Hunter had more of a physical presence than Max. Of course Hunter will be playing in the NBA next year.
  
  Kareem Johnson also did OK, but I think part of the reason was he played against the NKU team which is short. He just isn't athletic enough for me, but he can help as a back-up in my opinion and with Whaley hopefully that's all we will need.
  
  Pilgrim played well. The best I've seen yet. Again, it was against a smaller, less physical team, but he probably had 6 blocks, 12-15 points and 10-12 rebounds. He was more aggressive and he showed his athletic and jumping abilities. He definitely outplayed Johnson who is on the same team.
  
  White played his usual strong game. Nice three point shooting and athletic drives to the basket. They have to give him the three frequently because they don't want him to drive. When he has time, he hits a good percentage of his shots. I also liked his effort to get to the offensive boards. Could be the best offensive rebounder next year. Not to shabby on defense either. He has the quickness and I'm sure Huggs will work on the technique. In my opinion he will definitely be one of the go to players next year.
  
  Chad Moore played very well. Strong on defense, strong with the ball and strong going to the basket. He looks like he has put on 10-15 lbs. of muscle. He hit several outside shots and just played a solid game overall. I would not be unhappy at all if Chad was our starting PG next year.
  
  Slats won their game against NKU and it was primarily due to the efforts of White, Pilgrim and Moore. Fun game to watch. IF the JC's come through next year like predicted, we should be a top 20 team or better.
  
  I should also note that the Kelsey kid from NKU was on fire. He probably had 30-40 points with 8-10 three pointers. The way he played today, he would have been the clear cut starter for UC last year.

  Not too much to report. Slats did not play today, but is scheduled to play Tuesday at 6:30 and next Saturday, I think at 4:00.
  
  I watched two games today and Mike Pilgrim played in one of them. He did not start and played about 40-45% of the game. His team did have a strong starting front court with Will Caudell, Danny Horace and Keith Jackson. Delonte Holland from Dayton also came off the bench and he was a strong player.
  
  Pilgrim showed that he has the physical tools to play at the division I level, but he will have to improve his aggresiveness and skill level. He probably scored 5 or 6 points had a block or two and several rebounds, but was boxed out on a number of occasions by the smaller NKU players ( I mean much smaller 6'1"/6'2").
  
  Seems like a nice kid that will take instruction, I just hope he is competitive enough.
  
  I suspect that they scheduled Slats for a bye since some of the players have not come into town yet. I will not be there Tuesday so I hope someone will give some feedback if they see any of the recruits.

  Rode with Cleveland BB Club from C'Town to Durham,NC on bus.12 hour ride from Thursday 10:30 PM arrived in NC at 10:30 am Friday am very very long trip.But it was well worth it.Saw CBC and Jamar play 4 games.They went 3-1 lost to VERY VERY talented Atl Celtic's team Saturday night by 14.They were in the game until late in the game.Jamar had 20-25 pts in that game he played very very well.Against a team with 2 likely NBA players in Josh Smith and Dwight Howard.He drove past them for hoops he hit 3's he hit mid range runners.Pretty much did it all for his team.Saturday they player a very talented Arkansas Hawks team.The won the game in ot in front of all there big recruiting gura's.Jamar was outstanding in the game in crunch time.Hitting big shot after big shot.At the end ofte game and in OT.He really helped his stock in this tourney imho.He's has atleast 50/50 chance to be Mc's AA imho.Depending on how he plays at major events he will be playing in.NBA Camp,ABCD and Big time tourney.All in all great tourney.Saw several of the top 20 player's in the nation.Also got to see Dean Dome and Duke Gym which was real cool.Any ?'s feel free to e-mail me.

  Just when things look to be turning around, we jump right back into the same sinking ship. It's time for huggs to make some personal changes. Andy and Keith are not getting it done. Legree has done nothing and Kennedy....well if he could not get any talent UAB, why should he be able to do it here? Don't know much about Dan Peters, but I do know if huggs left, an XU fan would have just as good a chance of taking over the team.
  
  I always said, even with whaley and aj coming, 2004-05 would be the earliest we could make a run. Now we may not have either. Excluding Whaley, none of our remaining recruits are any better than what we have returning. Just more middle of the road players.
  
  Some people were dying for us to get in a better conference. Well, it may happen even though we may not be better 3 or 4 in conf.USA.
  
  We're slowly turning into charlotte, a good coach but can't land the recruits. Get ready for some NIT folks.
  
  You think i'm crazy? insane? old bearcatb has lost it? Well look at the recruits who are interested in us. Top ten players year in year out. Players love the red and black, the take no $#!%, us against the world attitude, they love Huggs, a white coach who seems to understand black youth. Cornrolls, baggy pants and all. But somehow we're stuck chasing scraps, getting players who consider American U and Maine. These are'nt even mid majors.
  
  And everyone who beats out UC are not paying the players. They just out recruit him. Hamilton played the near home card which is what he is supposed to do. AJ lived in Conn for a year. Close to home is not that big of a deal. Will he only play for ATL or ORL in the NBA? Pitino don't cheat, but we know he is a heck of a salesman. Huggs is gonna go they way of Denny Crum if he don't fix this problem.

  I think AJ will actually battle Whaley for playing time. The e-mails I've gotten about AJ from people who've seen him play say he could start for most big time programs. The fact that Whaley made 2nd team All-JUCO and that his work ethic are in question at times, makes me wonder who would play the most?
  
  The best thing would be having the two of them practice against eachother every day.

  Saw Mike play at Hughes tonight and here are my two cents worth.
  
  He's gotten a lot stronger the last two years and certainly has the hops to play at the high division I level. I don't think he has the ball skills to play the three spot and I personally doubt he ever will. He looks like a four to me. With this in mind I think he will need to develop his inside moves and improve his tenacity. He tended to let the game come to him. It may be due in part to the fact it was an all star game. He does seem to have the athletic ability to play for the Cats. He is quick enough and jumps like Maxiell. My prediction is he will likely see significant minutes his junior and senior year. The player he reminded me of is Aaron McGee. Aaron had a little better offensive skills, but isn't as quick. Both have strong left hands, but have difficulty going to their right.
  
  Several other players of interest. His high school teammate Plummer played on the other team and covered Mike part of the game. Plummer has more ball skills and is more fluid. While not as strong as Mike, he showed his ability to get to the hole. He will need to improve his outside shooting to be a complete player, but I think he is a solid division I player right now.
  
  The other player of interest was O.J. Mayo. I don't know if he is an eighth or ninth grader, but he looks as old as Chad Moore. He physically dominated the competition. Looked to be about 6'2+ and could dunk easily. His outside shot was very solid. I would take him as an incoming freshman right now and I think he would contribute right away.
  
  Anyway, I know there were other Bearcat fans there who will have their own opinion. I will be interest to hear what they have to say.

  It is being rumored that Mike Davis will leave Indiana and go to Georgia. AJ wanted to go to Georgia before Harrick pulled his tricks. AJ likes Indiana with Mike Davis.
  
  If Davis gets the Georgia job I can see AJ pulling a late switch (again) and sign up with the home school with the new coach. I think he would really like to stay close to home.
  
  I for one would continue to recruit AJ at the present time. I think there is a less than 50/50 chance of getting him, but he is too big a talent not to go after him. And it's not like it will keep us from offering someone else next year. I also think you have to give the kid the benefit of the doubt when it comes to the recruiting problems with Georgia. If we find that he was part of the problem then we let him go and work harder on a big man in the class of 2004.

  O'Fallon junior guard Xavier Price is a pretty accomplished shooting guard prospect in the Class of 2004. On Sunday, Cincinnati offered him a scholarship and that's not all he's got cooking.
  
  Price's current list is Oklahoma, Purdue, Cincinnati, UNLV and possibly Miami. Price says that the Rebels, Boilermakers and Bearcats offered. Oklahoma continues to express interest in him.
  
  "My main goal is the same every year," Price said. "I want to get better at everything - passing, rebounding, defense, shooting and ball handling." Add point guard skills to the list as well.
  
  Price contends that he's working on playing some point guard. "[They St. Louis Eagles coaches] told me they want me to play some this year. I ran it a little bit in high school but mainly for set plays.
  
  "It's just something else that I have to work on right now. I spend a lot of time running the point in practice."
  
  Price and the Eagles won the AAU Super Showcase last year and they'll be in contention for major tournament championships on a weekend basis this spring and summer.
  
  Meanwhile, Price will continue to examine his college options. "My main thing is playing time. I don't want to come out and have to red shirt or ride the bench. I feel like I can go in there and play now."

  From what I hear, UC is going to hold their last scholarship unless Alexander Johnson or Guy Ngarndi signs with them. 2004 targets are Lofton, Terwilliger, Chris Moore, Jason Rich, D'Aaron Williams, Aaron Agnew, and Seth Gorney.
  Priorities are a couple of big men and an outstanding shooting guard to go with Jamar Butler. Jamar Butler is the next Steve Logan, but even better.

  Tim Pierce, a multidimensional 6-foot-7, 190-pound combo forward from Fremont High School in Oakland, California, is just one of the many talented forwards in the class of 2004.
  
  Pierce might not get a lot of national recognition, but he has the natural ability to be one of the better players in this class.
  
  “Right now, I’m standing about 6-feet-7. I’m probably better suited for the combo forward position, but I can play a little of both positions,” Pierce said. “I can score from the inside or I can take my man out to the perimeter.”
  
  Pierce has not decided what schools he will officially visit and he does not know if all five visits will be used. It is still very early in the evaluation process, but he is hearing from some impressive schools.
  
  “I’m hearing from Kansas, Cincinnati, Texas, Miami, Oregon and California,” Pierce said. “I’ll start planning my visits after my AAU summer season is complete, and I will select a school a couple of weeks into my senior year. I’ll base that decision on how I fit into the environment, my relationship with the players and coaches, and my comfort level.”
  
  Pierce will spend his summer touring with his Oakland Solider One AAU team. If he is going to gain the national attention that many think he is capable of, this is when and where it will happen.
  
  He kicks off the summer with a trip to Las Vegas and, after that, will travel on to places like Chapel Hill for Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions, Houston, Texas for the Houston Superstars Tournament, Adidas Big Time in Las Vegas and several other venues around the United States.

  Went Last Saturday night.This board has been down or i would have posted this sunday.He's about 6'1" 185.The game i was at he made his 1st 6 shots 2 were 3's.He's a great shooter.After that he was hit wit 2 cheap fouls.Set out a few minutes.When he came back in he missed a few shots in a row.Couple 3's were in and out.Took over in the 2nd half.Finished with 30 pts.Things i like about his game.Great shooter,good athlete(not great)Was 2 hand dunking in warm ups.Had 1 dunk in the 4th qrt.More in a minute!!!

  Norman Plummer, the 6-6, 205 pound junior combo/small forward from Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, N.H., told Rivalshoops.com that he hopes to visit a Big East school in the very near future.
  
  Plummer said he has been offered a scholarship by Providence College and plans to visit the Rhode Island based school sometime over the next few weeks.
  
  A native of Fairfield, Ohio, Plummer has already taken unofficial trips to Louisville (Kentucky game) and Ohio State (Louisville game), but neither of those programs have offered him a scholarship to this point.
  
  Plummer played well in the second half at last week's NEPSAC quarters to help the Bobcats knock off second seeded Maine Central Institute.
  
  In addition to the aforementioned colleges, Plummer said he also has been hearing from schools like Wyoming, Dayton and Marquette.
  
  A lanky and long armed forward, Plummer is a bit of a tweener position wise. What he does exceptionally well is score around the basket, be it by running the floor and finishing in transition or stalking the baseline for second chance points. He consistently puts himself in good position to score and is more of a quick forward than a power forward at this stage, even though he's a master of scoring inside six feet.
  
  That said, Plummer admitted that he needs to fine tune certain aspects of his game. In particular, he hopes to extend his range from the perimeter and improve his ball handling. If he can do those things, there's little doubt he could play the small forward or swing position at the college level.
  
  "Anywhere around the paint I can score," Plummer said. "I am working on my perimeter game in general."

  ChicagoHoops.com has some interesting info on a few targets for the 2004 class in the state of Illinois. I have been hearing a lot about DeAaron Williams, a 6-5 SF from Bartonville. I know that Marquette is all over him. Another kid I have heard us mention with is 6-4 point guard Justin Cerasoli. Ohio State is all over Cerasoli. Cerasoli's plays on the same high school team with Dameon Mason (Marquette recruit) and Shaun Pruitt. Pruitt has half the Big 10 chasing him. I also see a kid named Othyus Jeffers, who sounds like our kind of player.

  Jimmy Hubbard was a JUCO transfer last year who battled back problems and ended his season early. I saw him once in Clifton and asked him what his future was. He said he was applying for a medical redshirt for this season (which would be his senior year). He is still on the bench during Bearcat games this year. Does anyone know what his future is and if he will be in uniform next year?

  • Hubbard was very unimpressive last year. Always a step slow and very poor defense. I can't see him sticking around unless he used up his scholarship this year and is going to pay his way next season and sit on the bench just to be a part of the team. Who knows?   From what I have read recently, UC is in the mix for 2 guys, Alexander Johnson and Guy Ngarndi. Both of these guys have IU first and UC as their second choice. Here is the question, does anyone know how many scholarships IU has left to give for next year? If they only have one avaiable due to the 5/8 rule, could we be choice 1A for the guy who waits to commit?

  • There are only a few good recruits available for 2003, nearly every good recruit is already signed. IU has 16 players on their roster right now, 3 of which are scholarship seniors (there must be some walk-ons). They've given one schollie for 2003 already, so they have 2 to give.       • Because he's more of an off guard/shooting guard than a PG. He has good ballhandling skills, but his forte is shooting the 3. Huggins and Co. basically like having PG's at each guard position, kinda like when Logan and Satterfield were starting together.   Does anyone else think that a problem here could be Andy Kennedy, UC's recruiting coach. Mick Cronin used to get guys like Martin, D'Juan Baker, Logan, Mickeal, and many others who were great talent, but extremely hard workers and coachable guys. All leaders too, I might add. Kennedy is recruiting guys like Bobbitt and Hicks, (both of whom seem lazy and already quit the team once) and now we are relying Robert Whaley who seems like a huge gamble. I give him props for Jamar Butler, but Butler seemed to always be destined to want to be a Bearcat, not just because Kennedy recruited him. I also think that the loss of assistant coach Rod Baker from 1999-2000 season hurts a lot also. What is the word out there on this stuff?

  • I think Steve Logan sealed the deal for Jamar Butler. 1. UC is within the state for Butler 2. Butler likes hardnosed style of play - tough kid 3. He saw a PG (Logan) that had control of the team and the ability to score at will with the greenlight 4. Butler is considered to have more tools than Logan - could be better depending on how hard he works 5. Very good playmaker, hopefully UC will have guys to make plays.         • Johnny Carson was recruited way before Cronin was the man. He was still the video coordinator then, and you couldn't just revoke scholarships for no reason, Carson was unhappy with the team and transferred on his own accord.   I saw a link a while ago on ESPN.com and Bearcatnews.com that said that Brandon Bender (who played at Louisville last year) is transferring to Cincinnati. It said that UC loves to add transfers, and was posted right around the time when James White decided to come here also. He is at Cincinnati St. right now and I saw him in person once and he told me he was coming here too. I haven't seen anything else though. It would make sense since he is a big man at 6'10". Does anyone have any other info

• We need scorers but we're not heavily recruiting Norm Plummer.......go figure -- Chatter, 10:51:39 02/19/03 Wed
  Everytime I go to Brewster's website to read their game reviews......Plummer scores like 25-40 points on any given night. Meanwhile, our recruit, Mike Pilgrim (not trying to slam him but) isn't even the second leading scorer in the game. I'm sure Pilgrim has potential, can play defense and rebound.......but can he score? That seems to be our problem lately and when a kid that has said he'd like to come home and play is tearing it up like Plummer is.......shouldn't you go after him heavily? He can score inside and out and rebound.....what else does he have to do? Jamar Butler and him together would be a nice combo for 2004.
