In reply to: Chatter 's message, "Poop Scoop claims UC has 5 scholarships this year. How?" on 12:28:00 12/10/02 Tue

This is a reply to the same question about scholarship limits that was posted on the BearCatNews forum:

RE: Re: White/Questions

The 5/9 rule was a 2-year exception to the original 5/8 rule. For the 2003 recruiting class, it's back to the 5/8 rule, and the "clock" has started over. That means every school can sign up to 5 recruits this year if they wish (and if they have scholarships available within the maximum allowed total of 13), regardless of how many they signed last year (UC signed 5, the 4 listed below plus Hicks). Then, next year (the 2004 class), they are limited to the lesser of a) 5, or b) 8 minus the number signed this year.
Transfers who receive scholarships count against these limits.

So, at this point it appears that UC has at least 12 scholarships accounted for next year, with 4 going to new arrivals. Here's the class-of-eligibility breakdown:

Seniors: Bobbitt, Flowers, Johnson, F. Williams
Juniors: Maxiell, Whaley, N. Williams
Sophomores: Hicks, Kirkland, Moore, White
Freshman: Pilgrim

Grove, Hollman, Land, Lucas and Meeker all will, or may have, eligibility remaining, and therefore any one of them could claim the remaining scholarship, but IMO Land is the only real candidate, and then only if he receives a 6th-year eligibility waiver from the NCAA. Instead, UC could add
another player in this recruiting class, and a freshman 4/5 player would be the best choice. If they do, they'll only be able to sign 3 recruits in the 2004 class, one of which will be Jamar Butler, and the second of which will very likely be Matt Terwilliger.
