Subject: Alexander Johnson a name from last year

Will not be attending Georgia next season,Alabama has commitments from a bakers dozen big men for next season as well,Akini Adkins,Shawn Taylor and Jemario Davidson.To bad UC will be out of scholarships thier would not be a better understudy to Whaley than Johnson for 1 season.

MILFORD, Del. - Alexander Johnson is spending this school year in Maine for a reason - to qualify for NCAA play. But the merit of that goal doesn't mean the kid has to like the journey to get there.


Such is Johnson's current existence at North Bridgton (ME) Bridgton Academy.

"Ain't nothin' up there but trees," the Georgia post player said Saturday night here at the War on the Shore. "It takes 45 minutes to get anywhere. I just watch football games and talk on the phone. No good food, either - ain't no soul food."

But there is promise of a different destination come next fall. According to Johnson, Alabama is the only school recruiting him hard right now, but Indiana, Oregon and Colorado apparently are sniffing around.

He can't go to Georgia - his original commitment coming out of high school - because the Bulldogs are out of grants for members of the Class of 2003.

Rest assured, though: He'll end up somewhere.

"He's ready to play at the next level," Bridgton assistant Al Lewis said after Johnson had 20 points and 10 rebounds in a win over Burlington (NJ) Life Center.

"He could help a lot of teams right now. He needs to work on playing had all the time, but he has all the tools necessary to be very good at the next level."

Including an effective jumper. He made good on four of his five three-point attempts Saturday night.

"I'm a big man," Johnson explained, "but I like to step out and face up. I'm really focusing on my mid-range game right now."

As for a choice in the spring?

"I just want a good coach," he said. "A coach who lets his big men step out and take the three every now and then."

He'll take another shot at the SAT in December.
