My mother in law use to tell me stories about her time in forced labour and old Stan that I speak of was sent to Siberia. When he was liberated he came out weighing next to nothing. He ate even a blade of grass if and when he could find one. When he was in the camp he said that he vowed if he ever got out alive that he'd kill 100 Germans. He was freed but never carried out his threat. I asked him why he came up with 100 and not 80 or 90 and he said that he just always concentrated on that number. However after a taste of life again the hate and anger melted away and he knew that he would be able to come to Australia or Brazil to start a new life. He's a Polish Jew and his surname name is Rybak. When he speaks of it his old blue eyes still fill with tears. I feel blessed to have known people like my in laws and old Stan. What they went through during the war was just unbelievable. Once I'd been to Poland and Auschwitz I understood them a whole lot more. I miss Jan's parents very much to this day. But we still use her dishes for special occasions and cook her recipes when ever possible so to us she's still very much part of us. Brave people who endured too much sadness.
