Slices of raw onion wrapped in a cloth and placed over a boil to draw it, magnesium sulphate paste put on a cloth and then taped over a patch of very small splinters got from falling off a creosoted fence (and indeed put onto a boil to draw it), but you can still buy the magnesium sulphate as I have a small pot of it in my kitchen drawer: gentian violet paint, Mam used to use it for painting mouth ulcers andI have used it for a bad mouth ulcer but otherwise generally on the animals to stop them licking at a sore. Ian brought the class guingeapig home one summer holiday and it had a nasty sore on its foot that it was always licking. The foot was cured by the time he took it back to school as gential violet tastes absolutely foul, and I painted it around an operation wound on the dalmatian as she wouldn't keep the lampshade on, and indeed used it on Carrie as she couldn't keep her lampshade on as a greyhound's head is much more slender than its neck, I do miss my girl, she collapsed when out with Mary and was rushed off to the vet who said that she had a perforated spleen and a lot of internal bleeding and no hope so David had the kindest thing done, but oh it's quiet and empty in the house without her. But that's by the by, we are talking of old recipes. I'm sure most of us will have had sugar and butter mixed together for a sore throat. I had some Kaolin and Morphine mix for upset tums in the cupboard for years, in fact I only got rid of it last year and it must have been at least 30 years old, and I wouldn't think you could buy that anymore, not with there being morphine in it.
