Poor bairn, her summer will feel longer this time than it would have done. I hope all goes well for her.

My children have gone through so many nicknames, some of which have stuck, that Rachel won't bat an eyelid at what I choose to call the Babe. Her brother calls her Doc Roc (it used just to be Roc until she got her doctorate and the words go so well together), I've called her Sweetpea for years, and still do, Ian was almost into his teens before his father stopped calling him Button (button nosed as a child) but all his friends call him Space, which he has been known as for over 20 years now. It was very strange to be in Whitby a couple of years ago and to hear some bikers talking about Space, but we turned one way and they went off in another direction before I could ask them if it was my son they were talking about, but when we went to a bikers' rally only a few miles down the road from here last year (place called Shelfanger) a fellow with a sales tent knew Space. He came from Yorkshire and we said about our lad being an instructor up there, and he asked the name, and when we said what he was called, his immediate reply was "Oh I know Space". Small world. I shall probably call the babe jellybean until he/she starts to kick and then I will have to change it to something more apt. It's lovely though, to actually have a grandchild on the way that I can be a proper Grandma to.
