Don't forget that after the war Poland became a communist country and it was incredibly difficult for people to get back in and to get out, and she may well have also thought that it would be better for the child to stay with people who loved him and who he would have loved back and who had acted as his parents for so long. A horrendous choice to have to make, but possibly one that was forced on her by circumstances rather than her own choice to make. Very sad though, but I hope a joyful reunion takes place for all of you.
