Subject: Why is there so much Darla hate?

*warning confused rant/ramble ahead*

I just want to say I like all the characters in Buffy/Angel. I can understand not liking a character and have that be the end of it. I can understand not really being interested in a character. What I can't understand is the wild unreasoning dislike of the Darla character.

I know she can be mean. I know she can be a b*tch. I know she's evil (I'm hoping she can change, but that's another story). Yet I still like her. I was on a list that was discussing the Darla baby storyline and one poster asked if it was okay to say she liked Darla. It struck me as weird. Why do Darla-likers have to ask whether it is okay to say they like her? Why do I have to feel embarrassed or ashamed for liking her?

Maybe I'm being too sensitive about this, but it's been bothering me for the last few months. Darla is a part of Angel's past. As far as AtS is concerned, Darla is the ex-wife from hell, using that metaphor, she can't be staked without a word. She needs to be dealt with head-on by Angel and he has to learn to accept her as a part of his past and live with that. Angel doesn't have to fall in love with her, but those two need to work out the dance they've been doing for the last century. Each time we see Darla and Angel in flashbacks, they often leave each other in the middle of important crises such as when Darla threw Angel out when he got his soul, when Angel returned to her in 1900 only to leave again, when he staked her in 1997, and when he threw her out in Epiphany. Angel and Darla have not been on the same wavelength since 1898. With the baby, I'm hoping that those two can finish their dance or at least change the tune, one that does not end in stakeage.
