In my opinion, Jordan Segundo didn't live up to the stereotype that Filipinos are Asia's greatest vocalists (Italians of Asia, as American columnist Clarence Henderson put it). True, he got the looks but I wasn't impressed by his voice. He can't really sing powerfully if you compare him to the male vocalists back in the Philippines like Gino Padilla, Victor Wood, Martin Nievera, Gary Valenciano, etc., even when these guys were still in their youth. Hope springs eternal, though: With over two million Filipinos on Mainland America and with the help of "Bot por Diordan" (Vote for Jordan!) campaigns among Filipino-Americans on Internet message boards and mailing lists, as well as in guestbooks and various newsgroups, I hope he garnered the highest number of viewers' phone votes last night that will propel him to the finals.

Jordan is not a bad singer at all and I thought the judges - not only Simon but also Randy - were blatantly unfair to him. The Rickey guy did fine but he was scared to hit the high notes. Jordan definitely sang better. Technical difficulties might have also contributed to his failure to crack the top 8. I heard that during the critical phone-in voting period in Hawaii, callers couldn't get through for the first 30 minutes. (NT)Paula02/21/03 1:24pm PST
