I like Star Trek, and also like "Doctor Who". When Star Trek the next generation came out, many of the story ideas were borrowed from Doctor Who. As an example, The Borg were first introduced in "Doctor Who" back in the 1960’s and were called the Cyberman. The concept of the Holography Deck was borrowed from Ray Bradbury, in his story called the Velt, or something like that, can’t remember the spelling. After reading it, it was shown on the Ray Bradbury Theater years later, and than Star Trek the Next Generation came up with there own version of this. Star Trek is far from creative, but I have to say this, there have been a lot of creative concepts that I’ve enjoyed very much. If you like something heavier that Star Trek, try Ray Bradbury books, and "Doctor Who" Television and of course "Doctor Who" books as well.
