Subject: Those darned emotional Vulcans--I never did get them.

I LOVED tonight's ep. Methinks T'Pol has a crush on Trip! LOL!!

This ep really showed that--deny it as they might--Vulcans have plenty of emotion brewing under the surface. They try not to act on it, or show it, but it's definitely there.

T'Pol was clearly annoyed (an emotion), defensive, irritated, etc. at Trip. Archer even said something about watching himself when he went to see her, as if she'd be furious--an emotion. And why would she care if everyone knew her personal business if she really had no emotions?

Then there was that prejudiced Captain. Was it logical to be so rude and condescending? Talk about arrogance!

I've never--in all my 30 years of being an ST fan--quite understood how Vulcans can function without emotion, and I've never seen them as possessing absolutely none. I've decided they have plenty of emotion. They just like to pretend they don't. Why else would they need to go to sanctuaries to "purge" themselves of emotion, as in last week's ep?

[> Tracy- I think TPTB are not checking the ST bible- They are letting the Vulcans come across as, well, cross! LOL Maybe they have progressed in they represssing of emotions by the time we get to Spock (And he was half human!). I think the writers has confused unemotional with condescension! -- Frances(See my reply to the post below!), 06:27:58 11/09/01 Fri

[> [> I agree with you Frances. I think the reason the Vulcans are so put off by us is because they havent been around us for a long period of time. Remember they live a lot longer than we do so it will take some generations to pass before they might open up more to humans. They have progressed a lot by the time we are used to seeing them in the earlier shows (later time period) and I think that is great. That is the best thing about the new show, we get to see how things started and how they progressed to what we the fans are used to seeing. -- Ian M, 14:20:48 11/09/01 Fri

[> Well -- I think that Spock (as was suggested several times in TOS) felt the need to behave as an uber-Vulcan due to his "mixed" heritage. And even in Kirk/Spock's time -- very few Vulcans served in Star Fleet or had much to do with Humans. I also think that it has been suggested in the other series and some of the "canon" books --- that VUlcans *do* CLAIM to have purged emotion from their society and culture -- but that it is more of an ideal and NOT strictly a given fact. And there's the difference between not ACTING on emotions and letting them drive you and not having any at all. I think it's been suggested that Vulcans like to TELL other species that they do not HAVE emotions, when what it really is, is that they are committed to never ACTING on their emotions. Maybe. BUt it is true that in the current "Enterprise" timeframe that the VUlcans don't have as terrific a handle ont he emotions thing as they do 150 years later. -- MichelleB, 16:10:24 11/09/01 Fri
