Subject: Not The Mother's Day That I Planned For

Hi Tina & Ellie,

Just before we planned to leave for our scheduled dinner on Mother's day, I went downstairs to my cellar. To my horror, both of my cellar rooms were filled with water. I have lived in my house for close to 33 years and had never had a real problem with water in the cellar.

I called Michael (my ex) as he has had problems in the past at his house with water in his basement. He came over, and we headed to Home Depot to buy a water pump. We had to settled for the only models that they had left. There were so many other people who were in the same situation as me. Michael spent all day working on installing the water pump in deep water. He had to make another trip back to Home Depot for some additional parts that he needed. He also had to drive back to his home for some power tools. The usual route to his house was closed and he had to go on the highway. I managed to go through several pairs of socks even though I had my boots on to help him out. Needless to say, it was exhausting and I did not sleep much that night worrying about the water. If it got too high it would ruin my furnaces. Thank goodness, the water did not reach that level and the pump is running day and night. I really appreciated all of Michael's help. He said that I have always helped him out as much as I could and now he is returning the favor.

Just to give you and idea of our state's disaster here is some current information:

600 roads closed statewide
150 national guard troops assisting local communities
34 emergency shelters opened
emergency workers evacuated hundreds of residents from flood-swamped homes and schools are canceled
10 inches of rain (surpassed previous record in 1984)
Hardware store sold out of 100 pumps in l.5 hours
river still rising
St Paul's School was declared a national disaster and they shut their campus down.
It is the worse scene here in New Hampshire in 70 years.

It is still raining today. We might get a break for Wednesday with light showers but expect heavy rain again on Friday.

I will keep you posted.

Phyllis

Oh Phyllis I was worried about you yesterday when I watched the american news on t.v.
I certainly hope things are calming down for you,I know the panic my daughters went through a few years ago when the river they both live by flooded, Cynthia lost thousands that insurance would not cover. She does not store things in her basement any more.
If your basement gets smelly after the waters go down, spraying the area with vinegar will help prevent the dreaded mold from forming,1/2 gallon of vinegar to a gallon of water should do. Sounds expensive but is a lot cheaper than trying to scrape off mold with expensive chemicals.
Please keep us posted on your personal experience, the news on tv is about strangers but you are a friend we really care about.
