Subject: Guy Fawkes

Saturday is Guy Fawkes day or some people call it Bonfire Night. Guy Fawkes tried to blow up our Parliament a few centuries ago and we still celebrate it.

We are taking the caravan up into the Pennines Friday to Monday to get away from all the fireworks, my dogs are frightened of them. We will still be able to see them on the plains, but too far away to hear them.

This is a lovely part of our country with view aross for quite a distance. It is very bleak and poor soil so only very hardy plants will grow. No hedges, just stone walls to seperate the fields.

It is close enough for me to go home if I want or need to, which is a bonus, I usually forget something. I was here last year when Bill was in hospital and it is close enough for me to have visited him.

I love this site, very calming and peaceful especially when the windmills are going but it can get very windy because we are so high up.

What is everyone else up to?

Margaret.

Hi Margaret. here in Australia when I was a little kid, Guy Fawkes.. or bonfire night, was very much celebrated. All the kids in the street got together to build a huge bonfire on a vacant block.. Dads and Mums joined in, Dads roasted potatoes in the ashes, Mums often made gingerbread and toffy for the assorted children. And fireworks of course.
Now all gone-- bonfires are illegal, as are fireworks.. only special Govt displays and exhibitions are allowed firework displays. However, we will have our own celebration on the 5th-- my son and his girlfriend are having a housewarming party, so that should be good even without the fireworks!
Hope you have a lovely, peaceful break away.
Ellie.
