This question is for people who have been involved in Miss NC for a long time.
What were some of the powerhouse preliminaries back in the day?
Also know that years ago, NC used to have 75-90 in the State Pageant.
What were some other preliminaries that competed?

Old Powerhouses: Fayetteville under Mrs. Zollars, Spivey's under Jeff & Nancy Heath, Western Piedmont under Dakeita, Garner under the Jaycees, Topsail Island -- if you held one of those titles, you were almost guaranteed to make Top 10. (NT)No name05:33:23 10/04/25 Sat

As Miss Garner, Patsy Wood was contestant no. 1 but only out of 60-something. The peak was 98 in the mid-60s, but dropped off after that. Not every county had a representative with some having multiple titles (Wake County based in Fuquay, Apex, Garner & Wendell, for example). Elkin Valley was in top 10 most years in the ‘70s, including Kathy Fleming as 3rd RU in ‘75, I think. (NT)No name20:11:30 10/10/25 Fri
btw, the Miss VA being referenced above was likely Linda Jean Moyer (not Meyer), who was a prelim SS winner & semi-finalist in 1970 as Miss Ahoskie. She won Miss VA the next year & was a prelim SS winner at Miss America, but didn’t make the top 10. (NT)No name17:35:49 10/13/25 Mon
In 2206 and 2007, Mitch Butts was ED for the Miss Lenoir Community College pageant. In 2006, the representative won non-finalist talent. In 2007, he had Miss LCC (Cora Ormond - non-finalist talent, comedy) as well as Miss Eastern Carolina (Claie Winslow, 1st Runner Up to Miss NC). He was also ED (with Chuck Black and Dennis Strickland) for Miss Durham-Orange County in 1992 (Carolyn Jones) and 1993 (Keitra Musgrave, top 10). He also was ED and started the Miss UNCW pageant in 1986 (Denise Jenkins, SS award). (NT)No name08:00:34 10/26/25 Sun
There were a lot more because of the statewide involvement of the Jaycees. As participation in the Jaycees declined, so did the involvement of the Jaycees with the Miss NC Pageant. (NT)No name07:21:22 10/27/25 Mon
Miss Shelby under DanyelNo name18:56:48 10/28/25 Tue
Forsyth County under Wade McIver and the Reddings (aka The Rock) were always highly competitive. (NT)No name10:03:42 10/29/25 Wed
We could look at the bright side: Miss Wilmington is returning ♥️ (NT)No name04:15:48 10/30/25 Thu
So true about Scarlett Morgan. She was beautiful, had an excellent figure for swimsuit, & such a talented vocalist. Should have had higher scores than some of those who made top 10 that year. (NT)No name20:40:36 10/30/25 Thu
