A couple of ideas for making owls

On naturalsuburbia, there is the cutest knit owl, Guardian Owl. I made one similar but not as round. And I did my own thing for the wings, as I wanted a certain look.

WIng (for a 6-7" owl)
With regular weight yarn, cast 5 sts. on size 4 needles. Increase at the beginning of each row till there are 10 sts. Work on these 10 sts. for 10 rows. Decrease at the beginning of each row till 1 st. remains. End off. Leave a 12" tail.

The reason for the long tail, is that I use it to give the wing some firmness as follows: with a yarn needle, sew around the outside edge of the BACK of the wing, then sew a line up the middle. End off. The sts. won't show & the wing won't curl up on you. This pattern can double for a simple leaf as well.

Felt is fine for a beak, but I wanted something different. So I had this tan play dough that I shaped into beak shapes. With a needle, I poked 2 holes at the top which would be used for sewing the beak on when the play dough was dry. Then let the beaks air-dry for 2 days. When dry, they can be sewn on.

Hi Jazz~

That's a cute "Owl"..although I'm not a knitter (still doing crochet.) For now I'll be crocheting only, as I'm still going slow at times and making sure I get all those stitches correct! My crocheting skills are coming along nicely and I am enjoying.

I'm sure the "Knitting Girls" will enjoy your post!

Jazz~ You're quite welcome. Maybe someday I'll become adventuresome and try to learn how to Knit. I do have friends that Knit and don't Crochet...so maybe they'll help me when I'm ready. Right now Crochet is my thing and I'm going to stay with it, as I'm really liking it!
