Subject: Ot Easter Camping

Happy Easter ! Here in Australia Easter camping is hugely popular. My daughter did not enjoy her first try at camping with a friend, on the banks of a river, I wrote this verse after hearing of their experiences.

~ FIRST TIME CAMPING ~
“let’s go camping for the weekend, have lots of fun!”
Next time he says that, if I’m wise, I’ll run!

First you find a good spot out of the wind,
Then you stick a band Aid on the knee you’ve skinned!

Put the tent up, put up the tent, and put up the tent,
Still it falls down, patience all gone, pegs all bent !

Finally a beer, time to sit, relax and whistle,
Arrives the ranger, face all red, moustache abristle!

“No camping here, no tents allowed, you’ll have to move!”
Comes reassurance – it will get better – things will improve.

Possums arrive to delight us, then steal our fruit,
Last seen heading up a Gum Tree, joyful with their loot!

Time to settle for the night, but frogs in the sleeping bags,
Mozzies buzz about, strange rustles, tent begins to sag!

Next morning, coffee, toast and grumbles in the drizzly rain,
stubbed toe, bones all aching, in my back there is a pain!

Ants in the sugar, invaded by cows, foul odour on the breeze!
Forgot the milk, bitten by leeches and swarmed by angry bees!

At last canoeing on the river, relaxing, sun shone –
Swooped on! Pooped on ! Paddles gone!

SOGGY ! WEARY ! GRUMPY ! Heading for distant shore!
Comes a voice “Lots of fun ! We should do this more !

Hi Fay~

Sounded like quite an adventure the kids had camping.

I always say my idea of camping is a nice hotel room.

Fay, I love camping and can actually relate to most of the things you mentioned, of course some the critters are different. We've camped with family & friends before who thought it was a horrible thing to do. Never again they said.
Love your poem. It gave me a chuckle. Sure wish we could get away to some camping.
