Years ago my DH made me a thing that holds 3 balls of thread and would probably hold 1 skein of yarn. I usually wind my yarn into a ball and I have a bowl sitting on a stool next to me to keep it in and when I crochet it just unrolls. Pretty easy and doesn't get all mix up.
