Subject: Training Courses in the Work Place

I am a 50 year old corporate professional in middle management. I am dyslexic/dyscalculic and have done fairly well for myself professionally. I am now in a situation at work where certification training must be completed to minimize the chances of being hit by quarterly lay-offs. The training is all on the company's web/intranet as replays. I am not grasping the training and am afraid to go to HR. The hard truth is though there are laws to protect us, just going to HR and making my disability common knowledge can hurt my career and how management sees me. Any thoughts/advise/previous relateable experience to be shared?

If your immediate boss is aware of the disability, my first reaction would be to go talk to him or her first, and work something out with them in private.

If the disability is not known by your boss a decision will need to be made on disclosure. From personal experience, some companies will ask to see proof of the disability prior to receiving accomodations, other will take what you say at face value. If your company has an employee handbook, I would look to see if they have any guidance on how to request accomodations. I would also list for your boss/HR how this disability limits you in completing the on-line training and what kind of accomodations you are seeking.

In the past I have disclosed my disability pior to hire and others jobs I did not. I have found that most bosses are very understanding and will do what they can to help, however, your concern related to disclosure limiting your career are real. Keep in mind it is against the law for your company to disclose your disability and use that knowledge to limit your career in the company.

If management disclosure is not an option for you, find a buddy at work and ask if they completed the on-line training, and would be willing to help walk you through it.

Hope this helps.

Mark,
I understand your delema. I like Sammy's response.
I would also see if there is someone at work who you are comfortable talking to and explaining the situation.
Good luck and let us know how you do,
Kim
