My son is a 21 year old college student with severe dyslexia. He can read however cannot spell. He also cannot do higher level math because of his short term memory problems. He is getting through his courses with a lot of work and most of it is absolute torture. He is not coordinated so working with his hands is not a path for him. He isnt artistic either. He is a wonderful sweet person and everyone loves him - he is great with people. He is very worried about his future and has lost hope that anyone will give him a job or that he will be able to support a family. I would appreciate any ideas about career options for him. I am also wondering if anyone knows of any career counselors that could help him- or even if there is such a thing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, This could have been me a few years ago!! I got a job as a Lifegaurd at a leisure centre. I would recommmend trying to get into leisure or some kind of work / organisation where they promot from within. I aslo worked in my local shop, which gave me lots of confidence. I am a sergeant in the police service now, so let your son know, it can be done and I still cant spell but computers are excellent now compared to when i started out! Also it is the person people employ so be confident (easier said then done) and sell your strenghts. At 21 tell him not to worry about his future and to enjoy himself.

Hi Barbara, I just finished reading about your son. I felt as though I was reading about mine! Which is why I am writing. My son was homeschooled by me as was my daughter. I feel as though I would do it all over again because I was able to get my son to a 10th grade reading level. He is now 22 and works at our family business he vollenteers as a Firefighter on the weekends. Anyway, the last 5 years since his high school graduation has be miserable for him and us to watch. His self esteem could not be any lower. He has shown sighs of depression now and no matter what we say about how we love and care for him, he's still very down. What I am looking for is someone he can talk to who is knowledgeable with Dyslexia and can help him. He no longer lives in our home but is in our same town. He has difficulty with just about everything from bill paying to emotional issues. He is very well liked by so many it's incredible! He is the sweetest young man. Sometimes I think too much so because he has been hurt by people often. I wish I had some suggestions for you but it looks as though I am serching for some help as well

Linda
I just saw your reply. Our boys do sound very much alike. I have been looking for help for my son but everything I find is geared towards young children and nothing for young adults. It seems that the early twenties is a very hard time for people with dyslexia. I will join your son to the prayers I pray for mine. If I come up with any ideas I will post it here.

This may sound pretty bold but it happens. Why not a treatment that corrects the dyslexia or other learning disorder. This certainly opens up a bunch more career options.
One problem we have ran into in adults is the relearning curve when they see and think normal. Our experience shows the relearning in much better than living with dyslexia.
Learn more at crossinology.com and pthutah.com. I must add one thought:this is for real!!

Please explain and provide links to the research support for the efficacy of crossinology. It seems as if this were truly a cure for dyslexia there would be some publicity about this but I will wait to see your information and support before reaching an opinion.
