I made my last dyslexic mistake two days ago...

I sounds like alcoholics anonymous, except that I'll always be dyslexic. That actually sounds wrong - an alcoholic may WANT a drink for years, but DECIDE not to have one. I guess what I mean is that I can't DECIDE not to make dyslexic mistakes.

Like most others, I started having trouble at age 10. In fact, the school decided that my reading was behind, so there may have been trouble before that. Age 10 is where I see the line in the sand though. At that point I was moved into a special class. I don't think they knew of dyslexia, but this move was good for me. I was happy and still didn't mind going to school.

By High School I hated reading and did very poorly in English. I did well in all other subjects, but always knew I could do better. I'd get the math test back and most all wrong answers involved mixing up my numbers. I'd mean to write 5526 and instead write 5562.

I learned to cope with this by the end of high school. It wasn't easy though. At first I couldn't see the mistake. I would re-read 5562 and hear in my head 5526. Somehow I managed to read with an echo. As my mind heard the numbers, the back of my mind was checking and double checking.

I still amde (I was just about to correct that - I think I'll leave it). I still made mistakes, but was determined. I wrote the grade 13 Calculus exam and finished in 20 minutes. I turned the papers over and wrote it again. I wrote it a third time and then compared the answers for any dyslexic mistakes. I got 100%!

Like a lot of people here, I don't have a lot of friends, but I don't seem to have the depression. I'm lucky to have strengths in the right areas, to not have been beaten down by parents, teachers or peers and, most importantly found a mechanism to cope.

BTW the reason I was looking for this is that dyslexia reared it's ugly head recently. I'd always had problems with direction, but didn't realize how bad or that it was related to my problem. I started classes with a personal fitness trainer. The class size was only 5 people. There were a lot of quick direction changes to left and right. It was comedic, and actually quite shocking to me, that I couldn't discern right from left fast enough. I'm glad they didn't make a video and post it on youtube ;-)

I'm not an alcoholic, I'm a dyslexic - and I made my last dyslexic mistake a few moments ago...
