Subject: Standarized Test : GRE

I have a very mild form of dyslexia. Taking a multiple choice test is incredibly difficult. The extra time does not help much since I can not break up the syntax if the question or the answer are built with ambivalence. It is a 50-50 choice to my concrete thinking. I have the ambition of pursuing a Neuropsychology degree and become a scientist.
If you found or have experience this challenge, please share them!
I am an older student with great passion for the field and can not let my brain stop me! (or my fears for that matter...)

Hi there Maricela. I have completed my degree in medical psych and would like to share with you how I managed to navigate MCQ. The trick first is to understand the underlying neurological principals that are responsible for the symptomatic affects of the dyslexic learning style. I'll send this on to your e-mail if you don't mind. In terms of the multiple choice issue, what works for me is this:
1. get a scrap piece of paper and cut out a window which is the same width and bredth as the answer grid. Place the grid over the answer that you are working on, so your eyes are only focusing on the one line of options. This prevents you from placing the anser for question 1 in the scale for question two (line skipping)
3. Make another stencle for your question paper, and place the setncle over each option and consider it in isolation, decide if it is correct or not before moving to the next option.Prevents confusion and info overload.
Worked for me, but you need to be innovative in comming up with a system that suits you!

here is an idea
1. cover the answers to the question...do not look at them! no peeking ;D
2. read the question
3. come up with the answer in your head
4.find the correct answer letter, say it is 1 B.
5.put your finger on 1 B. (keep it there)
6. now go to the bubble sheet and put your finger on 1 B. and check to make sure you have 1 B. on both the question sheet and the bubble sheet
7. now color in the 1 B. bubble
8. think of it as a game and it will be fun
9. this helps you destress

at first it may seem slow, but i have gotten really fast going through my exams this way and getting very high scores
;D

I am a an art teacher at our local community college. I often assign seating the first few weeks of classes, draw a seating chart with names. I have no short term memory!

I have recently added a daily herb 'Bacopa' to my diet. I do not sell this product nor am I recommending it to you but it has helped me.

A study is reported on the effects of Brahmi (Bacopa monniera) on human memory. Seventy-six adults took part in a double-blind randomized, placebo control study in which various memory functions were tested and levels of anxiety measured. There were three testing sessions: one prior to the trial, one after three months on the trial, and one six weeks after the completion of the trial. The results show a significant effect of the Brahmi on a test for the retention of new information. Follow-up tests showed that the rate of learning was unaffected, suggesting that Brahmi decreases the rate of forgetting of newly acquired information.

Go to the library and check out or request (if the library doesn't have them they will order them) two books, "The Gift of Dyslexia" (you will love this easy read) and "Gabby's Wordspeller Phonetic Dictionary" ISBN 978-0-9801025-1-2. These two things will make you soooo happy and confident!

Let me tell you I found out that I was dyslexic at twenty-four when I entered college. Now at 33 I am graduating nursing school when it was only a dream. I had to go through many tough times and alot of crying, while being a single parent and working. What I want to tell you the if you have the passion to do what your heart desires, you can do anything you want. Do no give up, you will stumble, you will cry, you will be fustrated and curse, but do not give up. Do not listen to negative talk or be around people who will not support you in your endavors, I had to elimiate alot of people for the reason and it was a lift off my shoulders. Also realize their will also be sacrifices so be prepared. I wish you the best of luck in your dreams.

I agree if you want something you can get it. I took the GRE and got scores that made no one look at me even though I had great letter of rec and tons of research of experience. I put effort in the studying for test, more then most of my friends, boyfriend, so I thought I was putting enough into it. Well I was wrong, after being rejected from all the schools I applied, had a mental brake down. I realized a test wasn't going to get in the way of me not doing what I wanted with my life. I got my paperwork updated to get double time and I studied, I mean studied hours everyday for months. I would work through every study books I could find. I made vocab. list I carried in my pocket so I could look at them at a brake I had. I still could have studied more. But it was enough to get my score more then double what it had been before and get in to all the schools I applied. My writing score was still very bad and I explained it to all the schools I applied. Good luck, find someone that will bug you to study and really give you a hard time if you are not doing what you need to follow your dreams. My boyfriend gave me so much shit when I wouldn't study, it sometimes made me very mad/upset but it made the difference.
