Subject: Dyslexic Landscape Architect Author: mariane wheatley-miller (Cannot pass proffessional licence tests) [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] Date Posted: 17:45:00 04/14/09 Tue I have been practicing Landscape architecture for 15 years now and started my own practice 5 years ago. I live in the USA and cannot pass the licensing exam (failed 3 times) I am so depressed over this and feel a failure. My collegues think I am above average in design and my work has won award for design. My dyslexia makes it impossible for me to ever pass the test, should I give up? Should I hire an attorney and have them represent me as discrimination like ADA? There are famous landscape architects and architects that have never passed an exam hence never got licensed but have international recognition, the exam process is near impossible for my condition yet not passing it makes me feel inadequate, I have worked with LA's that I could not hire due to there lake of ability yet they pass first time! please help I am at my wits end. But I've seen your problem in others and I've experienced it myself. I guess I was lucky, I was able to have a career, or three, but literacy issues very much limited my career paths. There's lots of assistive technology. I hope you're into that. Out here we have a Disability Discrimination Legal Service, a Disability Discrimination Act, and Human Rights and Equal Opportunity legislation. The examiners should allow you to have your examination read to you, and you give oral answers, OR allow you to use assistive technology for your exams. If they refuse, or have refused, these reasonable requests, you should be looking for whatever form your Disability Discrimination Legal Service comes in. Google the keywords: disability discrimination; disability discrimination legal service; and Human Rights and Equal Opportunity. Take all the help and advice you can get -- and act on it. Good luck.
