Subject: support group for people with dyslexia

I have been looking for an adult support group for people with dyslexia. But as I have not been able to find one in Australia, I have decided to set up the group my self. I have no idea how to go about it or even if people other than me would be interested in such a thing. I understand that many of people feel a lot of sham in admitting that they are dyslexic and so might hesitate about joining such a group. If anyone has any pointers, information, reactions, suggestions, etc. Please I would be interested in hearing them.

I'm very interested in a support group, I sometimes feel alone in the world like noone understands me because of my condition. It's not just idol conversation and if you let anyone know they view you differently like it's your fault. Just wish the world was more understanding, I've had jobs where i've read slow and the adults went and told the whole staff that i couldn't read. I felt like a kid being teased all over again!

Sharon, thank you for your response. What made me think that I wanted a support group was I was recently told by my supervisor that she did not think dyslexia exists and that I needed to fix my spelling as it continues to be an important issue in today’s world. This is despite my repeated attempts to explain the condition to her and the effect it would have on my work. While I have very supportive family and friends I do not know any other dyslexic people. I wanted to know how others dealt with there conditions at work, what coping strategies they employed both to minimizes the effect of their disability on their work, but also to minimizes the effect of other peoples ignorance and arrogance on them as individuals.
Margot, thank you for your interest. I have done some research over the past year and not found anything in Australia that brings together dyslexic adults, and that is why I am trying to set it up. If you are in Victoria then I know that SPELD Victoria is trying to set a support group, while I am looking into doing in Sydney. If you are in Sydney please contact me and let me know what sort of group you would be interested in.

This is my second attempt to enter this message. I'm using Dragon NaturallySpeaking and I said a phrase to slowly, got in a tangle and lost my previous attempt.
I am a community development field placements student at SPELD Victoria, in Melbourne, working on a support group for persons with dyslexia. As Alaine asked above, it would be good to get feedback on what people hope for in a support group. It is the people who have lived with the issues arising through living with dyslexia who know what support would assist them. If anyone would like some more information on the support group project please e-mail me at compassion@live.com.au
