Julia,

How wonderful! It is always nice when you can get an Arab out and around other horses. It really shows how Arabs really are instead of how most people think of them!
The thing I love about the Arabs is their willingness and their love of being worked. My first mare (her name was Lorelei) loved to be worked. If I had been working her hard the whole week and decided to give her a day off she would actually get mad at me. She even did this when she was 20 years old and pregnant with her 11th foal! Her daughter is the same way. She loves being worked and hates it when I give her a day off. Her favorite thing right now is being lounged over jumps. The harder it is and the more she has to think, the better she likes. My mom's mare loves being worked despite being 26 years old. She would also do anything you asked of her, even if it hurt her.
There is such a willingness to please in the Arabs that you just don't find in the other breeds. Yes some horses that aren't Arab do have it, but not with the consistancy that the Arabs do.
I wish more people would take their purebred Arabs to all breed shows. It is nice having all Arabian shows but I think that they have gotten too artificial. Too many horses that are winning in the shows are exactly your stereotyped Arab. Between using make-up, clipping their manes half off, having them stand and move in ways that are not Arab, there is nothing left of what an Arab really should be. I don't know how many times I have gone to the shows and seen horses that look more like saddle breds in the english classes and horse that look like they belong at a quarter horse show in the western classes. What ever happened to the horses that look like Arabs without looking artificial? Whatever happened to the versatile Arab that could round up cattle during the week and go to shows on the weekend?

Hi Mandi!
It was loads of fun getting him out there...and he was not a disappointment at all :)
It was neat reading about your mares... these horses need to have a job, don't they! I enjoyed thinking about lunging arabians over jumps... I am gonna have to try that!

Mandi...we will just have to breed for the best quality we can, buy the best that we can, and show up looking and acting like Arabians...:) Things have a way of changing, sometimes even for the better!

Julia,

My mares loves jumping like that. My 6 year old can't get enough of it, though I have to make sure that the jumps change frequently otherwise she decides it's more fun to find ways around the jump than to go over it!!! I just work the 26 year old over cavelletis instead of over jumps as she has had some serious leg problems in the past. It helps to keep things interesting for them instead of just going around in a circle. Makes them have to pay attention! It's also a great way to help build muscle.
I eventually want to train my mare for dressage, if I can ever find the time to ride her on a regular basis. Her grandsire was a really good dressage horse. He competed at the Grand Prix levels with his owner Gina Manion. Since she enjoys jumping so much I might have to add jumping to the list of things that I will eventually do with her.
You are right that we just have to breed the best horses that we can. I hope more people find that the Arabs are every bit as capable, if not more so, of competing in competitions against other breeds, including dressage and jumping. Their small size has never stopped them before!
Mandi
