Subject: Religious Jokes

Author:

[ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ]
Date Posted: 02:28:43 01/05/02 Sat

I recently got into an argument with someone over use of a religious joke. I said ,"Why don't we all sing a nice round of What can you do with a drunken Pagan." To me it didn't seem like anything wrong because I only meant it in jest but to others it could seem mean or even down right cruel. In my life I have found that people of a religion freely poke fun at it and do not feel they are doing any harm yet if people of another religion poke fun at it then we call it discrimination and hateful. He said that making jokes about Wiccans and Pagans wasn't honoring the Goddess and God. I replied that it was because you were using them to cause happiness. He brought up the point that it was happiness at the God and Goddesses expense. We talked for a while and are now friends but it left me thinking why do think it is ok to make jokes about our own religion is it that we feel we know when to stop or is there a deeper underlying reason for it? I hope some of you can answer me and until then Merry Part and Brightest of Blessings.

Just kidding. LOL ;)

I can relate to that. People are sensative to their faith. When you honor a god, you are offended on his/her behalf. When you could care less about a god, it doesn't bother you to make a joke about them. Is that what you're asking?

BTW, I know I've asked this before, but what does Merry Part mean again? It's just a way of saying good bye? Do you know the history of how that came about? It's an interesting way of saying...

No, I am asking why there is a double standard that if you belong to that faith you are allowed to say things in jest about it but if you don't belong to it and you make a comment in jest it is considered discriminative.

>what does Merry Part mean again?

Merry means happy and part is to leave so it is basically like saying good by or leave happily.

Hey, I have a black buddy who has no problem using the work "nigger". If you didn't know him real, real well and used it yourself, he'd prolly beat you stupid. (well, I'd prolly beat him to it). I don't really understand why he uses it himself, but I figure that in some way, he feels he's EARNED the right to use it. Same with another very close friend, who happends to be a Newfie. This guy tells the funniest Newfie jokes. I guess it boils down to if one wants to use himself, or a specific trait of himself, as the subject of ridicule, that's ok, but you better be sure of how he feels about others who bring that trait to focus.

There's a fine line between good-intentioned fun and ridicule. For example, I'm only 5'6". Not very tall, but it's never been a problem for me. I played all-star hockey, rugby, and travelled throughout Western Canada attending invitational karate tournaments. The way I percieve, and the way those close to me percieve my height is a little different than one percieving it simply based on a stereo-type. I can make a joke about it by saying "when you're my height, everybody smells the same". It's funny, in a stereotypical kind of way, but since those who know me well know that the height thing, in reality, isn't a problem, it's ok. If someone I didn't know make a comment or joke about my height, it could be percieved as an insult. Point of view is key. I've "earned" the right to make "short" jokes, 'cause I'm short, myself.

You may be able to pick up on cues from your friends about where the line is drawn between joking and taking liberties with a trait that may make them the minority in the group. If in doubt, shut yer mouth. Best way to be funny without being insulting? Make yourself the brunt of the joke. ;)

You make a very good point and I never looked at it from the point of view as, "Here's this guy I never met making jokes about my religion" I wouldn't probably feel as strongly as he did but now that I look at it from his point of view he was in some respects right. I should have watched how strongly I make my jokes. For when you look like me people laughing comes naturally. For I am Brannon master of all that is funny.........looking.

I see. It's like Monkey said. Another example could be, you get REALLY mad at your girl for one reason or another, (if that's possible ;) and you think to yourself something like a name, one that you would never allow someone to say about her otherwise.

A) I know completely what you are talking about and the world today needs to stop the age segregation because it patronizes the Youth of the land and sets up an ideal that just because you are young means that you don't know anything about anything B) I am confused over you and Prinncesss so I am just going to slowly back away while smiling and waving so that I don't get caught in anyone's crosshairs should something bad happen C) I am not even going to go into females calling me daddy because that would set me up for a whole lot more stuff than I need from both the people of this forum and the watchful eyes of a couple friends that I have given this address to, let alone my girl friend that might pop by see that and well lets just say she wouldn't be happy. Anyway enclosing people need to stop trying to separate us into age related categories and start coming together. Make love not war. So think before you hush yourself just because you think that the person will either not understand or shouldn't hear something 90% of the time that "kid" will know twice as much about the thing than you so don't sell the youth of this earth short cause if you ask us we might just tell you something you don't know. Brannon, I commend you. You speak well for your generation. I agree with you.

This reminds me of the first time you IM'd me asking me why there was an age limit. (blush) I have to say, you surprised me considering your age. I think what I had in mind, was an experience at another forum. There's this really nice kid, John that goes by the screen name, I love Jesus. He's your age, and seems a little less worldly than you. He may be a little sheltered? I don't know. I just know that there were some threads on sex, and they were talking about some things that got me thinking, it wouldn't be appropriate for him to see. I guess that's just what I was thinking when I said that. Also, I admit, I doubted the ability to be a positive addition because of age. I was thinking young = immature and therefore wouldn't be a good addition. I apologize for thinking that way.

Maybe if I'd never said that about the age limit, you might never have contacted me. So, in that sense, I'm glad I did say that. But also because you have helped shape my view of young people. It's amazing how we forget we were young once too! Of course I think that the youth today, know far more than what I did when I was your age.

The thing between me and Monkey stems back from a post on another forum. There is no disention between us at all. He just knows some personal stuff about me and is telling me something out of caring for me. You may have picked up on what it's about through any of the IM sessions we've had.
Wasn't one of them like four hours long or something? Man! We're talkers.

I said, "Daddy" because he was telling me something I know I need to do, but haven't done it yet. I took it as an informed and caring piece of advice as well as a reminder. I was just being playful...

I speak well but most of my generation does not. I was exposed to a lot of stuff and most of them were not. I know people that have never even been to an art gallery or sat and pondered the meaning of existence. Not all people can do that because not all people have done what I have done, seen what I've seen, and felt what I've felt because in all respects they are not me. If anyone on the board has a child expose them to as much as you can while there still young don't ever treat them as if they were just a minor because I know from my own experience and childhood that it just builds up resentment rather then wanting to follow you. The best teacher I ever had was Ms. Barns a 4th and 5th grade teacher who taught us to be individuals and question the norm. She let us have an enormous amount of independence and we (well most of us) respected her for it.

If everyone looks back at there life and thinks about if the had done this or said that there life would be better but then you must realize your life is the way it is because of your past and if your past was changed you wouldn't be who you are.

LOL why yes we are. I think that I remember that time. Boy did I slept for a long time the next day. The whole thing about you and monkey was really just a small thing what I really was trying to get across is that we (when I say we I mean the human race) shouldn't sell the youth of today short.

I know. In some ways I didn't really mean what I said and as I said the real point of the post was to say not to patronize the youth just because there young.

I want to make it known that I am not saying that all children are well behaved intelligent people. So don't patronize the youth but at the same time never drop your guard. The youth is just like the adults there are good people and bad people but they should all be treated with the same respect until they give you a reason not too.

But, and you seem to agree, you're likely not representative of those of your own age. Plus, I was kidding with Prinn (sorta). I have no problem with her lifestyle, just the one she's sharing that lifestyle with. She knows that, agrees with me, and is working on it.

I DID lead a sheltered life when I was young. Living in a well-to-do suburb, not being exposed to some of the harsh realities of life, I never even knew what divorce was 'til I was about 11. I do forget that being 14 now isn't the same as when I was 14. I'll try to keep that in mind in the future.

I think of you when I hear one of their songs. It's called Youth of the Nation. It's pretty cool. If you ever get a chance, listen to it. Morpheous, napster, bearshare are three places I know of that you could listen to it from.
Or just do a search on google.com and type youth nation POD listen.

I told you about my Quicktime 5 thing but my girl friend said she would let me barrow the cd and she thinks it is a really sad and deep song. I will hopefully get to listen to it soon.
