When you honor a god, you are offended on his/her behalf. When you could care less about a god, it doesn't bother you to make a joke about them. Is that what you're asking? Hey, I have a black buddy who has no problem using the work "nigger". If you didn't know him real, real well and used it yourself, he'd prolly beat you stupid. (well, I'd prolly beat him to it). I don't really understand why he uses it himself, but I figure that in some way, he feels he's EARNED the right to use it. Same with another very close friend, who happends to be a Newfie. This guy tells the funniest Newfie jokes. I guess it boils down to if one wants to use himself, or a specific trait of himself, as the subject of ridicule, that's ok, but you better be sure of how he feels about others who bring that trait to focus. There's a fine line between good-intentioned fun and ridicule. For example, I'm only 5'6". Not very tall, but it's never been a problem for me. I played all-star hockey, rugby, and travelled throughout Western Canada attending invitational karate tournaments. The way I percieve, and the way those close to me percieve my height is a little different than one percieving it simply based on a stereo-type. I can make a joke about it by saying "when you're my height, everybody smells the same". It's funny, in a stereotypical kind of way, but since those who know me well know that the height thing, in reality, isn't a problem, it's ok. If someone I didn't know make a comment or joke about my height, it could be percieved as an insult. Point of view is key. I've "earned" the right to make "short" jokes, 'cause I'm short, myself. You may be able to pick up on cues from your friends about where the line is drawn between joking and taking liberties with a trait that may make them the minority in the group. Make >yourself the brunt of the joke. ;) You make a very good point and I never looked at it from the point of view as, "Here's this guy I never met making jokes about my religion" I wouldn't probably feel as strongly as he did but now that I look at it from his point of view he was in some respects right. I should have watched how strongly I make my jokes. For when you look like me people laughing comes naturally. For I am Brannon master of all that is funny.........looking. Merry Part and Brightest of Blessing Brannon, I commend you. You speak well for your generation. I agree with you. This reminds me of the first time you IM'd me asking me why there was an age limit. (blush) I have to say, you surprised me considering your age. I think what I had in mind, was an experience at another forum. There's this really nice kid, John that goes by the screen name, I love Jesus. He's your age, and seems a little less worldly than you. He may be a little sheltered? I don't know. I just know that there were some threads on sex, and they were talking about some things that got me thinking, it wouldn't be appropriate for him to see. I guess that's just what I was thinking when I said that. Also, I admit, I doubted the ability to be a positive addition because of age. I was thinking young = immature and therefore wouldn't be a good addition. I apologize for thinking that way. Maybe if I'd never said that about the age limit, you might never have contacted me. So, in that sense, I'm glad I did say that. But also because you have helped shape my view of young people. It's amazing how we forget we were young once too! Of course I think that the youth today, know far more than what I did when I was your age. The thing between me and Monkey stems back from a post on another forum. There is no disention between us at all. He just knows some personal stuff about me and is telling me something out of caring for me. You may have picked up on what it's about through any of the IM sessions we've had. Wasn't one of them like four hours long or something? Man! We're talkers. I said, "Daddy" because he was telling me something I know I need to do, but haven't done it yet. I took it as an informed and caring piece of advice as well as a reminder. If anyone on the board has a child expose them to as much as you can while there still young don't ever treat them as if they were just a minor because I know from my own experience and childhood that it just builds up resentment rather then wanting to follow you. In some ways I didn't really mean what I said and as I said the real point of the post was to say not to patronize the youth just because there young. I want to make it known that I am not saying that all children are well behaved intelligent people. So don't patronize the youth but at the same time never drop your guard.
