Haven't paid any attention to guns for quite a while, now. I got rid of my hunting rifle about 8 years ago, and haven't gotten around to replacing it with anything. I don't think I'd opt for a .17 caliber anything, though. To be effective, it'd have to have a ridiculous muzzle velocity.

Right now, I'm more inclined to buy a handgun, .357 probably, than anything else. Still, there's always that range thing. Don't want to shoot at a prowler and get a bystander two or three hundred yards away. My personal observation is that a .357 is probably effective out to at least 300 yards. It's a conundrum. Low muzzle velocity translates to large caliber for stopping power, and very limited range. I don't like most of the auto's I've seen - the grip is all wrong usually. Too erect. The recoil throws you off target too far. Revolvers push your hand back instead of flexing your wrist upward.
