Subject: Tapering doesn't have to be six weeks. I would say that long of a taper is more for long endurance events.

I can't imagine tapering 6 weeks for the Oireachtas...the dances are 90 seconds to 2 minutes long. It's different thing than endurance sports.

That said, I've always thought it was odd that many (most, even?) schools crank up the practice time during the last week, even doing gnarly workouts right up until the day of the competition. It seems like a good way to get mentally and physically exhausted when you are going into a long weekend of (for many) travel and competitions (which can go ALL DAY!!).

For this kind of event, I would say, make sure you are well rested during the week prior, lots of sleep, good diet, TRY to reduce other stress if possible. If you are competing at a higher altitude than you are use to...then TRY to arrive a few days early and stay super hydrated. Don't overdue the practice, workouts or stretching in the week prior, especially if you are nursing injuries. Use more Mental run throughs and make sure your muscles aren't tired.

You may not sleep well the night before your competition so do what you can to get extra sleep going into the weekend.

Also make sure you have what you need for the day of the competition. It's a long day, and sometimes it isn't easy to find the food you need. At least have a back up plan, and enough food to get your dancer through their day if needed!
Good luck!
