• What is the benefit of moving up or not moving up if you have your requird wins? -- advice pls!, 06:11:19 05/10/13 Fri
  I am trying to understand the reasoning behind staying in a grade level (nov/pw) for a year if you have multiple wins vs moving up right away.
  
  My dd wants to move up right away and that is generally how it is done at our school but I am wondering if she should put in a year in these levels since she is young. Will she do better in PC/OC if she stays longer in nov/pw and gets multiple firsts in each dance?
  
  I do see some kids getting firsts with very small comp sizes with the "better" competitors missing - so maybe that is why some schools want multiple wins to prove that the dancer is ready to move up?
  
  Or is it that the TC knows of specific issues that they want corrected before that dancer moves up so they are keeping them back?
  
  Does slow and steady win the race at the end of the day?

  • It can be useful to stay to perfect skills at that level and gain confidence with placements. Other thoughts are that you should move them up to have better competition and get them to work harder to place. Will it change your dd's class at school?   • I think each tc has a preference. And having just the minimum number of wins doesn't always mean they're ready, yet having tons of extra wins doesn't, either! If we had held my dancers back, they would have just quit dance all together rather than beat the same kids over and over and watch kids they'd beaten move ahead.   DD has been attending feisanna for a year now beginners level. We only attend the very local ones, maybe an hours drive. It seems like most feis are held 2-3 hours away. Would it be common for the beginners and adv beginners to travel such distances to feis? Could they move up by just attending 2-3 feisanna a year? This is all new to us so thank you very much. I'm just trying to figure how how much we should be traveling and how necessary it is for a young dancer.

  • You're going to find a lot of varied answers to this question b/c every dancer is different. Some dancers progress slowly through the grades and then take off in PC/OC, others will race through the grades and get stuck in PC for a while, and then -- ., 20:07:37 05/09/13 Thu

  • The right street shoes can really help. I don't know about for a teen, but wearing Dansko clogs every minute my feet were on the floor seems to have resolved the problems I had. (NT) -- It took months., 16:40:59 05/12/13 Sun

  DD is going to compete in her first prelim...can someone explain the process to me and what I should expect? When is there a set dance, when not? How many judges? Are they alone on stage? Also, if it is a total disaster, can one return to PW if dd doesn't place or place well -- what are the rules around that. Please fill me in.   • Before comp check in side stage, they will tell you the order. Usually dance 2-3 at a time depending on the feis, 3 judges. In prelim set is a separate competition (if they have one), so unless you sign up it's just heavy (usually first) and lights. You could go back, but give it a chance.   • It is always good to arrive extra early and watch the competition on the stage before you (assuming its prelim). That way your dd can see how the whole competition runs. Used to being able to go check out results and pick up awards at leisure that we weren't paying attention when they announced where/when awards were being done.   • I am also looking to order. On the website is says the shoes will stretch a small degree in width over a period of time but not in length. I guess because the leather is so soft to start with there is less stretch than a harder leather that stretches as it softens. There is a shoe sizing guide on the website.   • We did get original pair at NANs, as I stated. Subsequent pairs were from later batches and were equally as unreliable . Great company and great people but (NT) -- Never again, 21:20:57 05/10/13 Fri
  • DD is in a show and has had her R&O heavies since last Oct, wears them for 6 shows a week + rehearsals and they still look great. R&O ask for feedback, both pos and neg, and act on it. (NT) -- uk mum, 00:54:35 05/11/13 Sat
