Subject: A thought about all of the viruses, worms, trojan horses, etc.

As I was listening to yet another warning about yet another virus I got to thinking and I wondered what is the purpose of all of these little obnoxius bits of programming?

What I mean is this: Are all of these things just the whims of pimpley-faced teenaged computer geeks who have nothing better to do? Or, is there a larger plan out there for some of these things.

I've heard that some of the trojan horses are actually used by some unscrupulous porn sites. However, most of these viruses seem to have no purpose except to run through our computers causing some vandalism.

To me, they seem to be a dry run for a bigger event. These viruses seem to have greater potential for harm than they actually achieve. Could some of these viruses be harbringers of a new terrorist threat, the kind of terrorist action that shuts down computers across the country? I've imagined the e-commerce system trashed, but also the instantaneous credit card system and anything else that powers our economy. Most businesses use e-mail as much as the phones and regular mail. It would be a tremendous blow to the American psyche and a shot right at our famous technology (like the World Trade Center had multiple symbolic and actual meanings - the biggest buildings in America's most famous city, the center of American finance, it truly was a "world" trade center so it punished those who cooperated with America, etc.).

Also, this forum would be shut down and that would be a terrible blow to the forces of freedom. Indeed.

So, whaddaya think? Am I way off base? Does it sound plausible? Should I just go to bed?
