STU:(Remember, saddam was our Buddy until very recently. So was Noriega, Bin Laden...)

Sorry, Stu, Osama was never our buddy. Not that we didn't try. He refused US help during the Afghan-Soviet war. In fact, American journalists were not welcome near him because he had a reputation, whether earned or not, of killing Americans on sight (in his mind the only difference between the Soviets and the Americans was the fact that the Soviets were invading Afghanistan in the 80s). Osama has kept to his principles, like them or not, throughout his long career. The Taliban, on the other hand, took US and Pakistani money until they felt secure enough to tell both of them where to get off.

STU: In order for this conflict to be resolved, there must be some communication - some attempt at understanding.

I am not a Kerry supporter, although I certainly hope he beats Bush. I am a Nader/Kucinich/Sharpton supporter - the people with the real platforms.

Ask yourself this - would Al Sharpton negotiate with the KKK - a homegrown terrorist operation? Would he have sat down and tried to understand the man who would blindly smash open his head with an axe handle or blow his children to bits with a bomb simply for being black in America?

How would that conversation go?

Sharpton: So, you want to kill me because I am black?

KKK: Yes. Unless you move out of the country to Africa.

Sharpton: Can I live in Harlem?

KKK: No - we're going to kill everyone there who is not white.

Sharpton: Can I give you money to leave me alone?

KKK: No. We're going to kill you and take everything you own because it is wrong for a black man to own so many nice things in America.

Sharpton: I see. I learned so much from this. Now I'll understand your motivation as you come in through my front door and drag away my children and beat me senseless in my own living room. This has been so enlightening.

Or, would Al have infiltrated them, spied on them and busted them wide open from head to toe with every tool at his disposal, from lawsuits to arrests to military-style assaults - the policy taken by JFK, LBJ, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush I, Clinton and Bush II?

You can't negotiate with someone who takes the position that you have no right to exist in the first place.

STU: There is no such thing as a war on terrorism. Such a war cannot be fought.

Really? England fought a long, protracted and ultimately successful war against the Irish Republican Army.

Germany crushed the Jewish resistance movements in Poland.

Also, see the above comments on the KKK in America.

Once again, how can you negotiate with someone whose entire goal is to see us dead? Does no one study history. Once again - Neville Chamberlain comes to mind. If only we would deal with Hitler he will settle down and play nice.

Besides that - what would you give them?

Also, why is it incumbent upon us to be the ones to behave here - who attacked first? (Marine barracks in Riyadh) and second? (First WTC attack) and third and fourth? (African emabassy bombings) and fifth? (USS Cole) and sixth (9/11) and seventh (Bali bombings) and eighth (Madrid). Where were Al-Qaeda's overtures - their attempts at being understanding to us and telling us what they would like? Maybe they left their position papers in the vans that they used to explode all of the Africans working the cleaning shift in the embassies.

To use another American example - did we hunt down the son of a bitch that was blowing up abortion clinics in the Southeast? Yes. We did not roll back Roe V. Wade and make abortion illegal (although I'd love to have it happen but not that way). Why not accomodate the man? Maybe move his way just a little and make it illegal on Tuesdays and every third Wednesday?

Because, if you give in to every idiot with a bomb than pretty soon everyone will have a bomb just to get their way. Pro-cigarette people will be bombing no-smoking restaurants and people that don't like the death penalty will bomb prisons and people that do like it will be bombing the ACLU headquarters.

STU: Bush took him aside and, shaking a finger in Clark's face, told him to make a connection between Iraq and 9/11.

Neither of us has read the book, but it is my understanding, from quotes I have heard read from the book, that Bush pulled him aside and asked him in an emphatic manner if there was a connection. A reasonable assumption since the Iraqis had already fired on our pilots thousands of times in the no-fly zone and had tried to assassinate Bush, Sr. and had been flouting the UN's requests for the previous three years.

I assumed it was the Palestinians since NYC is famous for its Jewish population. Does that make me a bad man for using my head and coming up with the wrong conclusion?
