I suspected that it was not one influence or another, but it is certainly interesting to hear your take on it. I think that the Roman conception of the rising into heaven, though perhaps political, was confused much more than this. Metaphysically speaking, there is a fundamental clash between the ideas of the kingdom of heaven being something you aspire to achieve through a goodly life and something you have within you at this very moment, and I don't (though I appreciate your explanation) believe that the reason these teachings were confused was because of political reasons. There is something within Western minds that twisted Jesus's original words (whatever they were) that has much to do with something else, something negative and fundamentally and spiritually confused.

It still puzzle me... :)
