Hi All,

I suggest that all breeders read and study the information re The ANKC DNA testing program. The first stage of this program is to be implemented on the 1st Jan 2006 the second stage of the program will come into effect 1st Jan 2008.
Once the second stage comes into effect both parents of all litters must be stud book registered, or the litter will not be eligible for registration. To be stud book registered the dog must be positively identified by microchip or tattoo and DNA typed and parentage checked. The qualifications required for stub book registration can be improved upon by breeder groups. If within a breed the majority of owners wish a particular disease test to be included in the requirements for stud book registration, testing for that disease will become part of the stud book registration requirements. Breed councils are encouraged to support the scheme by nominating diseases that they would like to see included for stud book eligibility.
Costing for DNA is stated as follows:
$65.00 per dog for DNA typing, parentage or pedigree verification
$150-$165 per dog for direct tests
$250-$295 per dog for linkage or indirect tests
Price includes the cost of sampling by collection officer
From what I understand only dogs DNA typed by Genetic Science Services will be recognised by ANKC. Hence if you can have the same tests applied by another Laboratory at a cheaper rate unless the outlined procedures stated by GSS are met they will not be eligible for inclusion in the ANKC DNA program.
Breeding dogs is already a expensive exercise if done correctly and you will need to add the above costs to current HD and Elbow screening tests, microchips etc…
I urge all breeders to think hard about what disease screening should be included for the Rhodesian Ridgeback and make sure that your opinion is voiced through the national RR club. This is a serious issue and registered breeders will be affected by the outcome. Discussion on the above within breed clubs should be occurring now otherwise the scheme will be implemented with very little input by the RR fraternity.
For those interested a article was published in the National Dog Ringleader Oct 2004 issue by Wendye Slatyer which points out various pros and cons re DNA compulsory testing.

Best regards
