August 16th, 2007 marks the 30ieth anniversary of Elvis Presley's death. A few days ago I watched the new documentary "Elvis by the Presleys" on tv. Does anyone know it too? I was very moved in the end because this guy really was a poor soul. For the documentary they interviewed his daughter Lisa Marie, his former parents-in-law and his ex-wife, Priscilla, who was in the focus apart from Elvis and I think she was the driving force behind this documentary.

I don't know much about Elvis' private life but I thought after his marriage with Priscilla ended they had as good as no relationship with each other, as it is often the case. But was I wrong! They loved each other like crazy. Elvis didn't want her to leave him but she couldn't live this crazy life with him. She said she loved him when she left him and admitted that she loves him even today.
After the divorce they had contact almost every day until the end of his life. Often he came to her in the middle of the night and Priscilla said that he begged her to come back to him and that he misses her and his family. That was very moving. She never came back to him and when she left him it was the beginning of the end.

But even if she didn't return to him he was always there for her. She said whenever she had a problem he was the first she called and he immediately came to her. She also said that he was an awesome father, always there for his daughter too. I don't know how old Lisa Marie was when she died but when she spoke about her father's death she couldn't go on talking and asked to end the interview. Very touching.

Priscilla's parents apparently loved him too. Especially his mother in law could not really talk about his end and tried to look away from the camera to not show her grief.
They showed many private video films from Elvis and Priscilla and they really were crazy about each other, with constant kissing and hugging. That was cute.

I feel sorry for him, because he was not strong enough to change his life, he apparently didn't even want that in the end.
He had it all, he was blessed with an amazing voice, loads of talents, was incredibly handsome (look at him in that comeback concert from 1968 - you had to fall in love with him), sold millions of records, had a beautiful wife (and Priscilla was very beautiful, they made a very handsome couple), had a daughter that he cared very much for.

After Priscilla learned of his death she said that she thought 'How can I live without Elvis?', because he was always there for her when she needed him. I liked what Priscilla said in the end. She said she will always defend him and his musical heritage as long as she lives because "he simply deserves it".
No doubt that she still loves him, she said it and I believe it the way she talked about him.

That brings me to a great Elvis song. After they divorced Priscilla went to one of his concerts and there he dedicated a new song to her that simply says it all. These words were really his and were directed to her.

YOU WERE ALWAYS ON MY MIND

Maybe I didn't treat you
Quite as good as I should
Maybe I didn't love you
Quite as often as I could

Little things I should have said and done
I just never took the time

You were always on my mind
You were always on my mind

Maybe I didn't hold you
All those lonely, lonely times
And I guess I never told you
I'm so happy that you're mine
If I make you feel second best
Girl, I'm sorry I was blind

You were always on my mind
You were always on my mind

Tell me, tell me that your sweet love hasn't died
Give me, give me one more chance
To keep you satisfied, satisfied

Little things I should have said and done
I just never took the time
You were always on my mind
You are always on my mind
You are always on my mind

Guess how moved Priscilla must have been sitting in the audience. But the second chance that he was asking for in the song, he didn't get.
Listen to the way he sings the words to this song and you know that he was a truthful artist. But this applies to all of his songs and his interpretations.

He was a brilliant artist for sure and his songs are for eternity. And what a colourful and expressive voice. Sad how his life ended, and so young. He was only 42.

If you haven't seen that documentary, watch it. It is very informative and touching, since Priscilla really opened her heart. I think she has never done it that way before.
And I must say, when someone asks me about the great love stories of the past century, I will definetely include Elvis and Priscilla. That's what I call strong, real love.
